Martin Storey is our interview guest in Episode 72. Martin has to be considered one of the greatest knitwear designers of our time, so we were privileged to be able to visit him in his north Devon home and speak with him. This interview goes wide and deep. We follow Martin's personal path of knitting and design inspiration but also look at knitwear design across the decades, with Martin showing us his favourite vintage knitting patterns. Given his huge contribution to the craft of hand knitting, this is an interview to savor.
Meet the Shepherdess brings a change of pace as we meet Gretchen of Solitude Wool. Gretchen is a shepherdess but also has a deep knowledge of fleeces, yarn construction and natural dying. Gretchen and her four partners at Solitude wool specialize in the production of breed-specific yarns, with a focus on rare and heritage breeds.
And Jennifer Beale joins us, again, in New Releases, we've got updates on our own projects, and we are announcing another KAL. Settle in!

Fabulous interview with Martin Storey who I have had the pleasure of meeting when he came to a local yarn store to host an evening showcasing Rowan designs. The cast on you showed is the same as the Turkish or Middle Eastern cast on which a lot of sock knitters use for toe up socks. Many thanks for a really interesting episode.

I love your Starmore sweaters which suit your colouring perfectly as they tend towards earth tones. Most of Alice Starmore's designs are in earth tones which clash with my pale blue toned complexion. Unfortunately Sheltand wool and Hebridean wool both irritate my sensitive skin. I plan to knit a few cushions in Starmore's colours and yarn and to rework some of her fair isle sweaters in jewel toned colours of merino, likely using sock yarn. I have done this for Dale sweaters using a machine zigzag stitch to reinforce the steeks. Not everyone can wear the yarn or colours for these designs. I love your podcast both the wealth of information and the enthusiasm and joy you bring to knitting.

I like the red/yellow band at the bottom of your MS sweater. It adds "weight" and what I think is a better balance, below the very bright and forward colors/patterns of the body of the sweater. Really enjoyed the interview with MS. Thanks.

When doing this type of hem (Linda Marveng Cardi) I like to put a purl ridge on the right side mid way up to make a nicely turned edge.

Joe Batt's Arm is an adventurous knit. You can say that again! I'd put it on the expert level. I wish I was there; I just love that sweater. Unfortunately, I'm barely an intermediate knitter. All you experts. GO FOR IT! I'd love to see some finished objects.

Hi Andreea! You are both so cute! That jumper that Andrew is knitting is beautiful and so well done. I am a beginner and I wish one day I will knit as neat as he does. :) That cast on is fascinating ..I love it and you know... I recently watched another video ( roxanne richardson) teaching this method which it's also called "Turkish cast on" . I am amazed how easy this is and I am scratching my head" how come the Turkish came up with this idea...why not the Romanians ??" ( of course I am a Romanian , lol. )But while the cast on is interesting , I love that you can use it as a double hem knitting those stitches together in that way. So cool...thank you!

And though I’m not Martin, my vote for the Aberdeen sweater is to go with the orange and yellow, the red is too heavy in my opinion. OMG my favourite designer...I look at patternand choose it.. and the .. oh yes it's a Martin Storey :-) even the rabbit cardigan for my grandchildren Luv!!! Yay..luv the zipper and ribbon gorgeous! Oh and I've kniited One Patricia Roberts fairisle vest so many colours together. i have one of her books and the vest was named Ovaline. She had one with clowns and ballons also..lovely patterns. No wonder I love Martin Storey designs. I did manage to bet some Woolybear in the knitshop in Flinders lane Melbourne.( it has been closed for yrs now.) But I even used Swedish yarn in soft yellow, yet it all worked so well. LOVE the Rowan felted tweeds.

You could use another brand for the red as you seem to like neither of the colors red/orange in Rowan tweed

Joan here Andrea. You were wondering what colour to use at the bottom of your jumper. I have used Fine Lace double, to knit with felted tweed, in colour work. There is a reddish shade you might like. Thank you both!

Awesome episode, as usual! I learned so much from the interview with Martin and I was thrilled to learn about Solitude Wool company. As for the Aberdeen sweater color dilemma - ouch! I don't envy you having to make that color choice. :) I was surprised their color palettes for Fine Tweed and Felted Tweed weren't more similar. What if, instead of going with a red/yellow border, you did something like a natural/neutral color border such as Ancient & Alabaster or Boulder & Clay or even Treacle & Camel colorway. Of course, that'd probably take it from a traditional Scottish pattern ... I am horrible with colors so never mind me! I hope you come up with something you love.

Excellent show. I really like the orange and yellow banding at the bottom of the argyle sweater. It brightens it and fits the with the greens. The red and yellow band is heavy and that red doesn't just add weight it makes it look dated - just my 2 cents. Maybe switch the yellow and orange or use a pinker red Looking forward to becoming a Patron and seeing what you choose for the band.

Wonderful show as always! I particularly loved seeing Gretchen, the Virginia shepherdess. She is from my home town! I now live in Canada, but I get back home frequently so I will definitely visit Solitude on my next trip home. Martin Storey is storied for sure! On screen the orange on the lace design you are wearing looked a better fit for the bottom of your MS top you wish to knit. I would check out different brands to find the right orange for that bottom band, the lighter orange was a too light weight look colourwise and the red took it down.

Re Aberdeen. Forgive me if someone else has already made this suggestion. But, yarnsub.com lists Debbie Bliss fine Donegal as a substitute for Rowan Fine Tweed. Donegal has two reds--Strawberry and Deep Rose. Another substitute listed is Rowan Valley Tweed, which has a red called Poppy. Maybe one of those will complement your bottom band. Love that pattern and want to knit it myself.

I really like the orange and yellow band for the Martin story sweater! The red is too heavy and in my opinion makes it seem a little crazier than the orange.

I would have knitted one more row, so that after the first half of the rows I could pearl one row, and then go on knitting: it will fold nicer and straighter, I think.

The lace pattern on the Linda Marveng jacket is lovely, and per Barbara Walker (who has it named as "Frost Flowers" in her Treasury of Knitting Patterns), it is an old lace pattern, dating from at least the early 19th century. So likely not from a Japanese Stitch dictionary. But it wouldn't surprise me if some of those prolific Japanese designers have their own take on this beautiful lace.

Great episode. Red is too heavy and boring. Orange is WAY more fun.!! and not at all try hard. It is more vibrant and celebrating life and the pattern. Go the orange without question! :-)

The red with the yellow gives it a more Mediaeval look to me. It works better than the orange but does not have the discord. Could you get a better look with changing the red to a purple?All the best with it.
