As soon as I saw Andrew's face I knew he was leaving the office job. He was sort of glowing like a child who got exactly what he wanted for Christmas! Another great episode and so appreciate all of the segments. I've learned so much watching your program. Really enjoyed the EYF segments in addition to the lovely Asja whose patterns I've been admiring for a year or so and the incredibly knowledgeable and articulate Jillian Moreno.
Just a quick note about yarn weight names in the UK and Australia that Jillian might not be aware of in the US. When a yarn is labelled as a 4ply or 8ply yarn in the UK or Australia etc it is a name of the yarn WEIGHT, not its construction. It's a naming convention that has a long history but it doesn't necessarily have connection to the actual construction of the yarn in spinning terms. (Just like worsted weight does not = worsted spun.) Have a look at your 4ply or 8ply weight yarns if that is how they are named where you are. Untwist them a little and count how many strands make up the yarn. It probably doesn't equal 4 or 8 actual strands (sometimes it is more cause plied yarns can be twisted together again!) but the naming convention continues because that is what knitters and crocheters are familiar with. It was confusing at first when I started spinning here in the UK as to why these names are not used the same way when talking about the spinning process vs the yarn weight. Just in case anyone else gets confused too!
I have finally got back to knitting, but have severe arthritis, fibromyalgia, back pain. Limits my time but knitting is my favorite! But my other problem is getting yarn! I’ve had one person kindly send me sock yarn! How kind! Made some for my granddaughter. I would love enough yarn for some of those sweaters! Then there was a mustard shawl near the end. To die for! I would always take any yarn people offered. Just hinting! 😉 Love this show! ❤️

Every Tuesday I think, "Is today a Fruity Knitting day?" I meet the most wonderful people and Andrea's interviews bring out their personalities so well. Andrew, you can't keep "delegating"! haha try some simple intarsia in a swatch before you attempt the real thing. Also, insert a lifeline before the intarsia section, so you can always rip back if you're not happy. You will be glad you have a new technique under your belt and you'll have a great sense of accomplishment when you've finished it.
I like these analytical aspects of yarns - in weaving you work with that - a shawl or whatever, woven on the same warp, can be flat or crunchy, only depending from the twist of the weft-yarn...
Excellent epsiode! Each time I’m amazed by the interesting people you find to interview. I’ve been enjoying the EYF content immensely. I hope to make it to the festival in person one day, but until then, your coverage is a great substitute. As a long-time patron of the show, I’m happy to hear that Andrew is joining the team full time. I hope that this reduces your workload a bit, so that you can enjoy some time off as well. I wouldn’t want the hosts of the most informative knitting podcast to burn out.

That is fascinating about the twist the knitter adds to or removes from the yarn; thank you Fruity Knitting & Jillian Moreno. I pick-knit like my Eastern European forebears. The knit stitch is formed from the back leg (which leads in EE knitting) and I wrap counter-clockwise. This adds twist and therefore tightness. This explains why my gauge can be wildly off if I've purchased an English/Thrower's knitting pattern. Aha! Great to know and explains a lot!!
I've been subscribed to your channel for a while now - since you interviewed a relative. I really enjoy your excellent videos. I've watched 3 now. I'm a seamstress, knitter, wool felter and have done some crocheting. Unfortunately, being a senior my pension doesn't allow for me to commit to a monthly contribution. I looked on your patreon page but couldn't find a way to contribute without making a monthly commitment - is there a way? Although I'm unlikely now to spin, weave etc. I've always been fascinated. I used to live in a community that had an wonderful guild for these crafts and nearby had a number of sheep farms and a woolen broker in town. I would liked to have joined that guild then to learn but had to move to the city. I like everything about your videos - high quality, great music, fun people, fascinating interviews and much to inspire - thank you!

Just to add a little more info about why so many plies are used with commercial yarn. It is not just cost that is affected but the tendency is to use much less twist than might be in a balanced handspun yarn . Commercial yarns have less twist to make medium or courser fibers specifically wool, feel softer than they would be if spun with more twist. So less twist in a fine single requires more plies. Otherwise it will feel much more scratchy. Also when fewer plies are used these are not as strong as yarns with more plies when the single is finely spun.

What kind of spinning wheel does she recommend if you can buy only one in your life? What’s the best fiber to start with if you are going to begin to learn? Why don’t ball bands tell you if they are worsted spun or woolen spun?
I am a worsted spinner by nature so, when I spin long-draw I tend to ply those types of yarns very tightly as I don't want pilling to happen or break if the yarn ends up being used on a loom.
I just think that cardigan looks so beautiful on you, Andrea. If you don't mind, I have a couple of questions for you: What is that shade of green called? and How much negative or positive ease did you calculate? You seem to have chosen the perfect amount of ease for a perfect fit.
Depends, for one, some hand dye yarns are dyed in skeins. To get a feeling for the length, the yarn stays in one colour before it transitions into another, it does not get rewound. The twist is the most relaxed, when the yarn is stored in skein form as opposed to in a ball, where the yarn is wound more compact.
This is also a regional thing. In my country hardly any yarn is sold in skeins, and mostly in various types of balls (of which I don't know the English names). But cakes are getting popular, too.
