I'm a black guy who isn't particularly partial to country music, so very much not a part of her typical fanbase. And I cannot fathom why this woman isn't hailed as a living legend. Her music is wonderful.
She doesn't get noticed as much because she refuses to play "The Corporate Game" and stays true to herself. She never has flashed T & A, never written a song with dirty lyrics. But she is CLASS "A" ALL THE WAY!! SO SAD that folks are missing out on her gift!
@nocountry4oldyoungman Hello, I liked your comment and agree with you from a white woman's perspective. If you will, I would love to know some of your favorite musicians, or bands. I think you could inform my taste in music and I love learning of new music to me.
I remember the first time I heard Chapin's music...I was heading into work, and had my local Country station, they were doing an in-studio interview (this was the early 80's) and they played "Quittin' Time" I damn near slammed on my brakes and yelled "Who the HELL is THIS GIRL?!?! She's FABULOUS!!!" Fell in love with her and music ever since! She's a true jewel !! Did you know she is in the "Songwriters Hall of Fame" ?!? Damn Straight she is!! =)
As a kid from Liverpool (England) I’d grown up listening to a lot of different bands/artists, but no country - but then in my late teens I stumbled across Shooting Straight In The Dark & it opened up a whole new world of music to me. I remember being at uni in the 90s & saying to friends “what do you MEAN you’ve not heard of Mary Chapin Carpenter??? Here, listen to He Thinks He’ll Keep Her then try & tell me it’s not brilliant!” My one regret is I’ve never seen her live - one of my old uni friends was lucky enough to see her perform in the U.K. but the spine damage I have makes travelling any distance difficult. Still, I’m proud that my friend got to go to the gig, which she said would never have happened if I’d not bombarded her with “you have to listen to this country singer” back in our student days!
I've been a fan of Mary's for quite some time. Her writing is elegant and poetic, her melodies chock-full of unobtrusive yet incisive hooks, and her voice plainspoken but earnest in delivery. With all that said, I think this might be the world's most poetic break-up tune. Taylor could and should take notes, Mary is a master.
Always loved Mary Chapin Carpenter and recently fell in love with this song again it's nice to listen to songs you used to love and fall in love with them all over again!
MCC is among the best songwriters EVER bar NONE!!!!!! And to this day, she's churning out great tunes. Unfortunately, we don't get a change to hear them. A lot has been dumbed down since her heyday. No one has time to think these days.
I have been very blessed to have had the pleasure of another prophet of music. Mary you are the BEST songwriter, musician, artist of the modern era. You amped country to a height it will never again approximate. You're a one and only one woman wonder. Telling it simply but weaving the fabric of the dilemma of a woman's view in a man's world. Without grievance you deliver truth in it's greatest depth, simply, succinctly, poetically, melodically, and humbly. Always surprising, and filled with bittersweet mindful lessons that touch each and everyone that heard your voice. May God bless you and thank you for sharing who YOU are during the pandemic of the year, 2019.
"I can't stand up if I'm always kneeling...Baby You Win Again" Loved it the day I heard it and now 31 years later still in love with her lyrics & music. God how time flies & it certainly waits for no one !
This song holds a special place in my memories. Back in '91 I was watching VH1 and, having a low bass voice, singing along an octave down. You Win Again came on, a great song I had sung along with many times. About a minute in I realized I was effortlessly matching her pitch. I know now that at 35 I had finally found my head voice, a range I didn't even know I had.
For some reason as a two decade fan of Mary's, I always thought if Nick Drake was still alive he would duet with Mary. Two world-class singer/songwriters. Thank you Mary. RIP Nick
my absolute favorite singer-songwriter! I discovered this song and the great album it is from in 1992. I didn't see this video until 1994 when she was featured as artist of the month or week or something on CMT.
@sarajanewelch72 It's from her 1990 album, "Shooting straight in the dark". Great song, and the album version features a great guitar solo at the end of this song that makes it even better.
I remember Mary. What happened 2 Mary? I have a nick name 4 baby and it's Apgar. The song was in 90. I sing along 2 the song and I sing "Apgar U Win Again".
@Shadowboro2 Thanks for letting me know! I'll look for it. I've always wanted to learn the guitar and voice parts to some of MCC's songs; probably will be fun and challenging.
All this video is missing is a cameo appearance by the late lamented actor Robert Urich as Private Investigator Dan Tanna from the classic 1978-81 ABC crime drama series “VEGA$”. If only CBS hadn’t cancelled “THE DUKES OF HAZZARD” when they did, she might just as well have performed the song at The Boar’s 🐗 Nest to pay off a speeding ticket from the celebrity speed trap. In fact, I think that maybe Buck Strickland has a vinyl 45RPM of this song playing on the jukebox at Sugarfoot’s Barbecue in Arlen, Texas.
Almost Oct of 2021 and still just an outstanding song. Now it's computer generated crap or Taylor trying to entice the pre-pubescent little boys to get little woodies over her tramp outfits. Days of Truth, Innocence, & Purity in Music and life are gone. Already listened to this at least 10 times again in the last 2 days along with some of her others. Mary Chapin Carpenter is a treasure.
