In Mass Effect 2’s Overlord DLC, Commander Shepard investigates a Cerberus project that’s gone horribly wrong. Upon arrival we meet the project’s chief scientist Gavin Archer, who informs us that Cerberus was conducting research into a human-VI interface with the goal of gaining an edge over the Geth. Gavin’s brother, David volunteered to help develop the interface but has since been overwhelmed by the VI and taken control of the station.
As we fight our way through the station to remove the lockdown, we discover that David Archer is autistic and was essentially exploited by his brother to take part in this project. At the end of the DLC, we discover the horrifying setup that Cerberus has created to connect David with the VI. And we have the choice to either send David to Grissom Academy or leave him with Cerberus. Making the renegade choice of leaving David with Cerberus essentially gives us the bad ending to this quest.

Funny enough, Joker mocks them about that in ME3: Citadel. Mentions Overlord and the failed Rachni experiments, as well as EDI and Shepard “getting loose and killing all their guys”. Tali mentions the Thorian Creeper experiments in ME2, iirc. Seems to be a common theme :p. Glorious incompetence. Of course they magically became semi competent in ME3 (Citadel Coup and Thessia, arguably Mars and Horizon) probably because they were Reaper controlled.

@Paradoxical enigma Their initial funding came from being an alliance organization, then I imagine they began looking for private backers once they went rogue. They probably also had plenty of black market dealings, which would explain why they wanted to gain control of omega so badly (in addition to it's massive eezo deposit). Plus I'm sure having the publicity of working with commander shepard also helped bring in recruits and financial backers after ME2.

Even for Cerberus, this was a tragic disaster. Not because David had to die, which he didn't, but... because he had to live. Living like that, regardless of how long it happened, was undoubtedly living Hell, and I can't imagine how he carried on with such memories...

When I made him shoot himself I literally waited for the "ITS JUST A PRANK, BRO!" paragon interrupt, because I didn't expect it at all. The consequence to just telling him, that you don't know was so unexpectedly harsh. But satisfying AF.

Yeah if anything ME lacks consequences for the paragon path, if you play renegade you are basically sabotaging your playthrough but exept destroying the Genophage-Cure Data in ME2 i cant think of 1 time you had negative consequences for paragon.

Plus, I heard somewhere that Paragon/Renegade from this DLC doesn't carry over to the rest of ME2 so I'll probably always use that as a loophole when doing Renegade playthroughs because I just can't go Renegade here.

@@Jedi_Spartan_38 I'm playing renegade as well, you can totally make paragon decisions pretty much in any case you want and still easily max renegade points by the end of the game. In my opinion some renegade options are plain dumb and dont even make sense from a renegade perspective

At one hand, Gavin tortured his own brother and exploited him viciously, and he deserves to suffer such a sorrow, that he kills himself. At the other hand, Idk about David's pov. What if David would still feel bad for his brother? Although, I know from myself that my mom's ex has treated our entire family so horribly, he has been mentally very abusive, and actively telling his friends (I'm glad I was never friends with his friends to begin with) that I'm the crazy one for pointing out his bullshit to my mom, and if it was legal to beat the shit out of him, I would have totally beaten him to a pulp for screaming at us all the time, and being a sexist pig.

I have members of my family on the autism spectrum. So David’s story Is quite moving for me. What happens to him is the worst kind of exploitation of an autistic persons abilities. So I always save him.

@@MR.ICE. i genuinely found the character to be annoying and unlikable. Any sympathy you felt was lost to me the second i realized all the people he killed for no reason, including my shepard twice. Mass Effect DLC in general seems to be a bit eh with few exceptions. While i have a platform, now that im an adult i realize what they were going for with Mass Effect 1 and while 2 was my favorite for years it makes me sad to realize Mass Effect 2 didnt truly continue the possible legacy 1 started, although its still good in its own right

Shortly before the end of me3 you will gain lots of war assets. Because the human reaper was recovered by cerebrus from the collector base. And in turn you find it during a mission. And it's brain gets added to the Crucible

I saw this for the first time recently playing the Legendary edition with my renegade Shep. Even though I was playing a heartless renegade when I saw David hooked up with those tubes I was just like ‘Nah, man this shit it so wrong!’ Had to free the guy and don’t think I could ever make the leave him with Cerberus choice. In my first playthrough, I left david for Cerburus because I legitimately thought that would somehow help me in a future mission. It didn't lead to anything. That's what sucks about doing future playthroughs, is that you realize gameplay-wise what is more beneficial to helping you compared to what would you morally do which wears off after your first playthrough.

Yeah, no kidding. Right now, I'm getting close to finishing a run of the trilogy where I try to get maximum war assets for the final battle in ME3. So far, it seems like going Paragon during almost all of the minor story choices, such as things like the Rachni, the Genophage cure data Marlon creates in ME2, etc. give you better rewards for going Paragon. Whereas the bigger choices at the end of each game, saving vs sacrificing the Council and destroying vs saving the Collector base, seem to give you better rewards for Renegade choices. I know from past playthroughs that saving the Collector base gets you a good war asset bonus after finishing the Cerberus base assault, but I need to complete my current playthrough so I can compare how many points you get from saving the Destiny Ascension compared to what how much higher the Human Alliance fleets score is when they suffer heavy losses from saving the Council.

Yeah that's the thing with moral decisions. Sometimes what goes around comes around and doing good is beneficial in the long run, and sometimes being cruel comes with no benefit or actually hurts you. It's more interesting when you don't know for sure whether a decision is actually going to be helpful

@battlesheep2552 Which is excellent game design. Both the Paragon and Renegade outlooks have merit to them. Therefore, a fully Renegade PLAYER picking options to increase the War Asset score alone will do a good deal of Paragon actions.

I actually went Renegade in this mission during my first playthrough. I felt uncomfortable about that but I needed maximum Renegade points and I thought that project will affect the game in some way in the future. But this project fails anyway. So, there is no profit in letting David there but Renegade points of course. No matter what Illusive man says about "progress".

I know it's off-topic but today i have watched the movie 'Mass Effect Paragon Lost' and I'd say that it greatly portrays the origin story of James Vega, his mission on Fehl Prime, and his ultimate choice of saving the data over the colonists. So, I think it would be great if you'd make a video on your opinions regarding the movie. I'd love to watch that video.

I could've sworn on my first playthrough that you can meet david and his brother on the citadel in 3. They talk about how they are working on something against the reapers, but not necessarily with either the alliance or crucible project, as well as mending their relationship. That's one heavy hallucination.

I have Aspergers Syndrome myself, but I learned how to turn my own "weakness" into a strength. When I saw David like that, I am hardly surprised by atrocities in life, but it was still no less painful to watch him be put through that. I get him out and even years later it's never easy to not pull the trigger on Gavin.

I never thought to wait after the Geth Quarian war to do that mission in Mass Effect 3. I saw the weird suicide scene when my brother had told Archer that his brother didn't make it. The glitch happened then too.

I'd rather let Gavin Archer live so he can witness a) how things are done correctly and b) for him to draw the right conclusions. I nonetheless have drawn a bead on him, and if he hadn't used the chance granted to him, I would have had my Shepard make good on his promise he has made during the aftermath of Project Overlord. But no matter what, I'd always pull David Archer out of this quagmire. It's the logical choice for an INFP.

Gavin Archer was voiced by Simon Templeton that also voiced Admirall Han'Gerrel in Mass Effect 2/3 and Loghain in Dragon Age. Random guy was voiced by Nicholas Bouldon that voiced Hawke in Dragon Age 2 and other minor characters both in Mass Effect and Dragon Age series.

There is also 3rd possibility, shoot from the cain in ME2 to destroy defences, but it also kill David and you automatically skip the part where you speak with Gavin Archer. I don't know however what it will change in ME3 as I immediately restarted mission because of that.

It clearly shows how low some people can sink in order to gain knowledge "in the name of science". This is so terrible, and playing this made me realize that Cerberus definitely has crossed the moral event horizon. I'm always pulling David out, and since it is also thwarting Cerberus, so much the better!

I never had this DLC quest in the original mass effect 2. So when I got the remaster and the dlcs are on here I was terrified of this quest. Very scary. I saved David I was really shocked I couldn't let them take him I saved him. Even Shepard doesn't like it. The only thing I hate about the DLC however is that your crew mates don't say anything or comment about anything. It's was such a great side story so heart breaking as well! So sad.

ME3 Liara terminal mentions Cerberus having ocular flash bangs. Mordin in ME2 mentions that the Normandy Cerberus crew have cyanide capsules in their teeth iirc

I’ve played through ME2 once before replaying it now through the legendary edition. I don’t think I found, had or did this mission before and wanted to see what clips people had uploaded to see their interpretations or opinions on this. This mission seriously got to me as everything we know about the neural network of the geth is in no way stable for the human mind. The one exception being in ME3 when you break into the geth ship to destroy the heretic geth from the network and the only reason we could do that is plot armour essentially. This sadistic (insert naughty word of your choosing here) subjected his own brother to what the game itself describes as “Thousands of voices speaking out at once” and the fact that Geth are able to make super quick decisions because their form of communication is faster than light, David constantly had those voices in his head. Never ending and his brother just stood there and used him as a damn science experiment. While pleading and begging for his brother or someone just to make the pain and the voices stop. David repeating his brothers words over and over “it all seemed harmless” as he’s hanging in suspense, broken, impaled and betrayed. Being that far on the spectrum his brother would have been in a caregiver position, possibly even a legal guardian at that point, and the only person who David may have had unconditional love and trust for, and he hurt and exploited him in a way that even the most creative sadistic renegade femshep would have even said is going a bit too damn far. God Damn I forgot how much love I had for the story telling, complex dynamics and just moral and ethical grey areas this game presents you with and needed to spout it out. Though for real. I wish Andromeda was able to keep this ball rolling. It’s a shame.

Does anyone knows what Dr. Archer gives you at the end of conversation if you left David at his care? I know it's the project data, but what exactly it affects in-game? You don't even gain a codex from it as far as I can tell.

As someone who doesn't know someone with severe autism, I still saved him bc I'm a human capable of empathy. You hear his suffering and then you see it. Even if he can control the geth he won't help them anyway.

The reasoning behind using the base makes some sense. It’s essentially a scaled up, twenty billion times more horrifying version of the Maelon’s Data question. “People died, so we have to use the (base/data), or they’ll have died for nothing!” The big kicker is, Cerberus isn’t trustworthy. Mordin is.

I cant agree. Save David, the end. Have you seen how all of their other experiements ended? Except EDI (and I cant say she was an experiment), they all ended in disaster.
