Should you let Garrus kill Doctor Saleon? In this video we’re going to explore Garrus’ personal quest and its impact on his morality in Mass Effect 1. Specifically we’ll be looking at the outcomes for this quest and the consequences for Mass Effect 2.

In Mass Effect 1, each of your squadmates has a morality score on the paragon and renegade spectrum. Shepard can influence the outlook of the crew through conversations and quests, potentially shifting their viewpoints throughout the game.
Garrus’ morality is unique among the rest of the crew because his morality score is actually imported into Mass Effect 2 and creates some unique dialogue in the sequel. Shepard can either encourage Garrus’ renegade behavior by agreeing with him in conversation or show Garrus a different, paragon way of doing things.
With the help of Shepard, Garrus will get a second chance to take down Doctor Saleon. When you board the research vessel you’ll get swarmed by reskinned Thorian Creepers. Once the fighting is over, you’ll confront Doctor Saleon.
You’ve basically got two options in this scenario… you can take the renegade path and let Garrus serve up a little space justice. Or you can paragon it up and try to arrest Saleon instead.
Either way, Saleon ends up dead but Garrus learns a different life lesson depending on how you approached the situation. Near the end of the game, Garrus will thank Shepard for taking him onto the crew and teaching through example.
In Mass Effect 2, we reunite with Garrus on Omega. Depending on your influence, Garrus will have some unique dialogue after the mission, when you ask him what he’s been up to in the past two years.
If you showed Garrus the way of the paragon, he’ll tell Shepard he went to rejoin C-Sec. However, if you indulged in Garrus’ renegade nature, you’ll learn he tried to become a Spectre. There’s also a neutral dialogue option - assuming you didn’t speak much to Garrus in Mass Effect 1.

@@opticalraven1935 "Meaningful conflict is the soul of drama" and all of that. Personally I think the Saleon and Sidonis situations are entirely different. You can justify killing Saleon as pragmatism - don't have time to deliver him gift-wrapped to C-Sec, got a Saren to chase, besides he's clearly an unrepentant dangerous sociopath anyway. Sidonis, though... he's a broken man and no danger to anyone else. Wrex is the most renegade member of the crew except for racist Kaidan. if you play a renegade femshep and romance Kaidan, you can turn him from the most paragon teammate into a human supremacist. then taking both Kaiden and Wrex on a mission will cause Wrex to argue for the paragon option.

I much prefer the Paragon path for Garrus' mission in ME2. There's a sense that he's headed in a dark direction, and Shepard is that one friend who both understands what he's going through, but also cares enough to steer him onto a better path. Also, if you warn Sidonis, it's heavily implied in ME3 that he sacrifices himself to help Garrus' father and sister escape Palaven, paying the debt he owes Garrus for his life.
@rdrrr
@rdrrr Год назад
Yeah, the Saleon and Sidonis situations are different and you can easily justify Shepard approaching them differently: - Saleon is unrepentant. He's clearly still dangerous - his ship's full of deranged victims of his medical experiments. Saleon's a sociopath who isn't about to turn over a new leaf. Shooting him saves you time and C-Sec money. - Sidonis is a shell of himself tortured by what he's done. He's no danger to anyone else. The only justification for killing him is so Garrus can indulge in revenge and feel like he's found closure. That's not a particularly compelling reason to take a life.

I was wondering, actually: Can you teach Garrus to chose something like a "middle ground"? Like, I totally agree with him killing Saleon - I don't really see any sense in keeping him alive. Assuming you take him prisoner, there's a chance C-Sec might just straight up brush it off if you bring him to them - again - and if you interrogate him you're probably not going to learn much more than you already know. But at the same time, I'd really like to teach him not to get too carried away in the name of justice. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that Garrus wants to help others, but reading the descriptions of what he did to the criminals he killed on Omega really gives me the feeling he's treating this a little too much like a personal vendetta (like he himself said). I'd just like to know if there's some way you can teach Garrus that different situations require different measures - if that's possible, I'd love to do that.
@dragonslair951167

His merc-killing spree on Omega is a little questionable to me, too. None of the merc leaders who were after Archangel struck me as particularly cruel or ruthless. We don't see them do anything particularly nasty. Sending the freelancers in to die is the worst thing we see them do, but those freelancers still willingly signed up for this, and the mercs had already lost a huge number of their own men trying to take down Archangel. The worst thing Garrus says they've done is shipping "tainted" eezo (Whatever that means) into Citadel space. Mercs are still people. And there's a good chance a lot of the ones Garrus killed were just trying to survive or feed their families in an utterly lawless world where poverty and gang warfare are facts of life.

Stopping Garrus from shooting Sidonis teaches him that revenge is not a good reason to take a life. I usually allow Garrus to shoot Saleon but stop him from shooting Sidonis. I don't know. I always felt the outcome of the paragon influence disappointing. I expected him to actually embrace C-SEC not end up leaving it again to take matters into his own hands, which to my mind was what the paragon influence path was deterring him from in the first place. But instead he ended up doing exactly the same thing in ME2 as his renegade persona, although with a slight difference. I mean you can still see he's different on Omega, but I just expected more, it just feels shortcutted to save time.
@BioTheHuman
@BioTheHuman 2 года назад
Yeah, they should have let him in the c-sec if he took the paragon root and you'll encounter him when you go to the citadel and you can ask to join you. Who cares if you skip a nice mission mass effect players would much more love the uniqueness of such an event. Also, just put another random turian in the place of Archangel but than he will 100% die after the mission so you get Garrus and the mission. And for the Garrus' loyal mission, you can let the same mission but in this case Sidonis would have helped some criminals in the Citadel.

If there is something I miss in this series is a way to not kill, but neutralize similar to what we do in Feros with the Anti-Thorian gas. We could have powers or weapons that could be modified to use some sort of sleep/stasis ammo and capture people alive for interrogation ( with the option as a renegade to torture them, or charm and convice them with the paragon ways).

This is why to me Mass Effect 1 has the best squad dialogue. Since this game you can influence squad members to a different path. All based on your responses when speaking to them. In the latter games they dumbed it down. It becomes they hate you or they like you. The only way to get them to hate you is not doing their loyalty missions or cheating on them.

Before you meet Harkin in me2, you can advice Garrus not to be too hard on him. If you renegaded Garrus, he will mention that you're the one who taught him to be hard. You can reply something like "only when there is no other choice". I don't know if paragon Garrus has something similar.

I always tell my Garrus about the Paragon, and He always seems to admire me more for that and try to learn more about me. Also noticed he'll always take care of hard decissions I'm not making, in ME2, in Proyect Overlord, if you didn't shoot the LOKI unit he'll do it if he's with you, also in ME3, if he's with you, he'll kill Kaidan/Ashley if you didn't get them on your side in the coup. Also the way he talks about you not being able to shoot a friend if they aim at you, and the talks about admiring the enemy. Garrus seems always a bit renegade, but when he must instead of all the time

Idea for your next ME3 video: in the Citadel DLC, you can invite Kolyat to your apartment to hold a funeral service for Thane. Afterwards, before going to speak to the Salarian coincilor, Kolyat gives you 3 video messages from Thane that he made before he died. How do these measages change based on whether or not you romance him? do other events within the trilogy affect what he says in these videos? etc etc etc

I never saw the Paragon dialogue with Garrus in Mass Effect 1. I did try to be more Paragon to him, but somewhere along the way I might have contracted myself getting a dialogue where Garrus said he wanted to to thank me for taking him along, but after he kind of gets shy neither remarks about killing Saleon for the the greater good nor does he talk about his frustrations after seeing it through Shepard's Paragon perspect. When it comes to Trilogy Bests, Mass Effect 1 truly was the best RPG in terms of in-game dynamics and options.

Dude, I don't know why I suddenly remembered all the times Shepard says, "I should go," but every video of yours I've watched until now I kept thinking, "Why is his outro so weird? 'I should go' is such an unusual way of just abruptly ending a video." I guess with that in mind, it's a pretty unusual way to end a conversation too...

I have found Dialogue by Joker that I have never seen in anyones playthrough in ME2. What you have to do is after every mission go to the bridge/ helm stand behind Joker but do not interact just stand there. He says lots of stuff some of it to do with piloting the ship some rhetorical as he knows you are standing behind him watching. Do it after every mission. there are loads of lines he says some short some directed at shephard. Also if you didnt know you can close the shutters to the helms windows the switch is top right on the ceiling panel. Legion does a robotic dance is you go visit him after the suicide mission...just open the doors and stand just inside room dont move dont do anything after a minute or so he will do the dance ( of victory ) :-) 😎
