Baden-Baden (1925)
For a number of years following the First World War Germany had seen no great international tournaments. Mannheim (1914) was their latest grand-scale tournament which the outbreak of the war had brought to a premature conclusion. Lamenting this sad state of affairs, Dr. Tarrasch approached the municipal authorities of the famous old spa town of Baden Baden, which had hosted the Baden-Baden (1870) event (1) on an international scale. Their response was favourable and the organisation of the event was placed in the good doctor's hands. Most of the invitees accepted but both Dr. Emanuel Lasker and Jose Raul Capablanca insisted on large appearance fees which were unable to be met. Other absentees were Milan Vidmar and Geza Maroczy who were unable to attend because of work commitments. The final entry consisted of twenty-one competitors, including Dr. Tarrasch himself. The final result was a great win for Alekhine, foreshadowing his later triumphs at San Remo (1930) and Bled (1931).

in my opinion this sequence is and remains the GOAT feat of OTB chess calculation. there are some other really amazing gems of pure calculation in Alekhine's game history, especially his blind-fold simul game (as black) with Gonsiorovsky in 1916

Games like this make me think a lot of the older elite GMs were much stronger than the ones today that have the benefit of engines and computers. This is all pure calculation and all over the board, no correspondence.
@rhwing5095
@rhwing5095 Год назад
@@davidagbi4550 It's possible - players today for sure have a lot more knowledge and understanding about positions, due to sheer passage of time, analysis, and accumulation of knowledge across generations, but in terms of pure calculation or seeing lines, maybe the masters of old were on par with the modern ones (or sometimes better?) !

Those players stories are definitely most magical of all of your content. That slo-mo rook move is amazing! At regular speed it appears to be going in a straight line. Not until you see it in slo-mo do you realize that Alekhine is moving his piece in a spiral fashion! Maybe that's why he was so good. :-)

Vast knowledge booster. I was reading the annotations of Alekhine and the reason why Reti didn't go for the 3 move repetition is because, Alekhine understood the fact that Reti considered at that time himself to be the better player, and because of that Reti played for the win, but got punished.
@danielgautreau161
@danielgautreau161 Год назад
Immanuel Lasker said that at 5:42 W should play e4. Reti is trying to play an extreme hyper-modern game, not advancing his center-pawns. But sometimes you must, if only to control the squares behind them
