I quite disagree with your recommendation that it is only for 2000+ FIDE. I'm a casual player, no rating, just around 2000 on Lichess Rapid for what it's worth, and I've learned tremendously from that book! I'd say, if chess is your main pastime, go get this book :) and be prepared to spend a LOT of time on it.

you mentioned that your preferences for positional vs. tactical positions should influence your opening choices. Any chance we can get a video on that topic? I think a lot of people get caught up in memorizing lines and don't pay much attention to the flavor of the positions

Just finished the book last week, took me 6 months. I plan on returning to it frequently as the structure of the presentation is very conducive to learning - chapter with rich explanation followed by 15-20 exercises reinforcing what you learned. This is how every chess book should be. Thanks for the review!

Thanks Andras for the book review. I just purchased it on Chessable and plan to spend the next few months going through it in detail. After spending the past few years studying endgames and openings I figured it was time to look seriously at chess strategy. Your review confirms my choice in buying this course.

Example 156 is a complete game from start. There are couple of other ones as well. The chessable videos were quite useful for me when learning this book. Although a bit pricey, for a 1200 Rapid rating rating player like me it was quite a nice change from the conventional book. He not only explains the plans and the tactical refutations of some of the moves, but he also shows how some of the positional structures came to be from move one.

I really appreciated your examples with Karpov - Gligoric and Short - Kasparov games. I'm working with this book presently. 1st i study the examples and then i go to the exercices on the same topic. An habit i have since almost a year now is that whenever in a book an example is start from a diagram position, i put the position on the chessboard engine and let my CB17 do the research in the megadatabase, this way i can play the entire game (i love to know where the position came from, it's important for me.) As you said, some examples requires good amount of time. Again today on 1 example i did not take enough time to analyse the way i should eliminated an enemy piece. A really good book.

I'm about 150 pages into mastering endgame strategy and I love it! My only negative comment is similar to this books examples I dont like that that it doesnt tell you white or black to play. The exercises do however. My preference is to attempt the example myself before seeing the method

In terms of improving middlegame play, I would be curious your opinion on this book vs some of the other options, the complete manual of positional chess, the original pachman series, grooten, or maybe even silman. Personally, I don't think you can go wrong starting with Grooten and of course you cant go wrong with game collections, however after that, I'm not sure which is the most efficient path to take.

@BaeBox
@BaeBox 3 года назад
one of my biggest concern with any chessbook is that by pure chance, the author leaves the explanation of one of these variations out, or just gives it a "and white is clearly better here", and just because I randomly don't understand one of the underlying things, I don't get my bang for the buck, and don't take away everything from the book. Or so it feels very often. It's frustrating because I invested time into it, and end up just using an engine after all. Maybe I am not a book person?
@ChessCoachAndras
@ChessCoachAndras 3 года назад
Hence my recommendation to go through it with a coach if posible.

Hi Andras. I just wanted ask you if you had read any of Valeri Beim's books. I feel everyone has been sleeping on this author, as I have seen no reviews of his books so far. I'm a 2250-2350 player online, and if that counts for anything, I can attest to the brilliance of his writing style . Take a look at his "Back to Basics: Strategy" (Russell), for example, where he explains the issue of harmony and coordination like I've never seen anywhere else. Also, his books on Chess Dynamic and his last one on Intuition are superb. He has anther book on calculation which introduces concepts that improve upon Kotov and Aagaard on the technique of calculating variations and choosing candidate moves. You should seriously take a look at his books.
@nicoterradas
@nicoterradas 3 года назад
More on the calculation technique thing... Shereshevsky in his last book ("The Shereshevsky Method to Improve in Chess" -- NIC) discusses Beim's new concept and improvement on the traditional Kotov/Nunn/Aagaard treatment.

@CarlKarlsson420
@CarlKarlsson420 3 года назад
I do get the argument about this improving your long time control chess more, however, doesn't the huge amount of examples and exercises increase your positional intuition aswell? I.e. if you take your time on the exercises and really try to understand them, wouldn't that "raise" your level of intuition regarding that subject, making you more likely to find them in blitz/rapid games?
@buk1733

@thalisonamaral1642
@thalisonamaral1642 2 года назад
I think the point is that, isn't recomended if you aren't going to play longer games to try to explore the ideas that you've studied in the book, but just playing blitz, you won't be able to explore a lot, and you won't feel that you aquired a lot from the book.

As someone who doesn't have an fide rating I often find it diffecult to know if something is or is not made for someone around "my level" because most often authors only say wich fide rating they make it for. Ps, keep up the great content :)

As a very general rule: subtract about 400 from your lichess blitz or 5-600 from your rapid rating to get your FIDE OTB. This rule really breaks down as your rating increases above 2000 lichess though, as the ratings get closer near the top...
