I apologize for the watermark!!! Long story short, my editor crashed and I had to find a new video editor but I did not realize until after hours of editing that it would not remove the watermark unless I paid for it.

you remind me of Paul Farmer M.D., who recently passed away in Rwanda. He founded an organization Partners in Health and was a Harvard professor. He did the regular US internal medicine residency and a fellowship. And then he pursued global health. I think you will do great things in your career. You just have to take what you can from the training. And keep your personal goals.

Thank you for your kind words and thoughtfulness. I have not heard of Dr. Farmer but I will definitely research more about him.

There's no way to completely know whether your decision was perfect leading up to the first day of residency, but if you get into a program like that, it will no doubt be stellar. In the end, the odds are huge-to-one that you will love it - well as much as you can actually "love" being a busy tired resident. When you get done there, you will be ready to rock. The "chapters" of training whiz by and the next thing you know, you will have been in practice for 10 years. During my residency, I was of course always tired and stressed, but once I finished I felt like I could handle about anything and looked back at it fondly. You will do well and it sounds like a solid decision to me!

Thank you for the words of encouragement David. I am happy and blessed to report that this was the right decision. It has only been a couple weeks but I have been overwhelmed by the support, teaching, and wellness that this program gives its residents. All of the hurdles in medical school that I did not anticipate can finally be put to rest now that I am in a nurturing environment. The work is extremely difficult but it is so much better going home physically tired than emotionally drained. Very excited for your journey and I appreciate you watching/listening.

@@lifetime_learner That's great news. Sounds like you will love it. It will go fast. My residency sure did! BTW I went DO (OSU-COM in Oklahoma) but did an allopathic residency and specialty boards- so I have a "hybrid" mix MD/DO education. Yay DOs! (I love all my MD peeps tho)

Which specialty are u going into and why did u chose it? Is it the specialty u wanted to do in the beginning of ur journey?

Congrats u deserve more🥳👏🏻👏🏻 I had few questions plz I'm international medical student (outside US). My first and second years in med school, my grades were literally very low (the lowest) in all the blocks and subjects and I failed and I'm about to repeat a year so there will be a gap.. the question here could I still be able to match if I wanted to do the usmle or ukmla? And that will be an obstacle or issue due to my grades or the gap year that i repeated it? Secondly, if it was an obstacle how can I fix this? Finally, what do u think is more suitable in my situation taking the usmle or ukmla? Plz any advice 🙏🏻

Hi, thank you for watching! I cannot speak on the ukmla because I have had no personal experience with it nor any close friends who have taken it. I myself took both the USMLE and COMLEX (osteopathic exam) because I wanted to improve my chances of matching as an osteopath. I wish I could tell you an algorithm that would guarantee your acceptances but unfortunately the system is very confusing. I have had friends with perfect grades who did not get in, friends who failed multiple times who got in, and those in the middle who did not get in. There does not seem to be a "definite" way to get in unless you are a perfect student, with perfect extracurriculars, published papers, amazing letters of recommendations (which is very few and far between). I can tell you that if you truly want this for your life then continue to stay the course. Find mentors that you can have relationships with to guide through this hard path. Become a part of extracurriculars that make you passionate. Do your best with grades and try to enjoy the fundamental learning that will help you in residency. Truly all you can do is your best and if it takes a couple of years then it takes a couple years. Just please do your best to not get trapped into going through the motions just for an acceptance. No job is worth that.

I think your mentors and their willing to teach are more important than the location.

Honestly, I feel bad. It all sounds like you would have thrived at a better medical school/rotations.

I think I grew a lot through the experience. So I’m trying to take what I learned and use it towards my goals.
