Never once had an issue with anxiety or depression until medical school. It is now all-consuming. It is hard to get out of bed most days. I might have 1 "OK" day per week. I rarely have good days anymore. Asking for help is hard, I've asked for help, and it is a pain in the ass to get help even when you know where and who to ask. I can't even imagine how hard it is for people who don't know where to turn for help.

Hey Emily, thanks for sharing. I completely resonate. I had bought a of depression in high school but medical school opened a whole new can of worms. I’d also have days where it felt like months since I was genuinely happy. I remember consuming my time with tv shows to escape reality which worsened the isolation. I wish I had better recommendations for you. Not sure if you’re a person of faith, but prayer and my church community pulled me through some dark times. Exercise and eating well definitely help but I also found it creating anxiety when I couldn’t keep up with it or was on rotation that didn’t allow for it. Let me know if you’ve found anything encouraging to help your process.

@@lifetime_learner Hey! Yeah I've got a few things like journaling, deep breathing, walking away from my desk when I am feeling particularly overwhelmed, etc. Always helps to vent too. Thanks for the reply!

Hang in there ❤️. My uncle whose a doc gave me one piece of advice for med school: success is learning to give consistent perseverance without over exerting yourself. The hard part is learning to take the breaks when your body and mind say no. But like you said that's where God comes in. Gotta trust God to do the rest. Good luck!

Some of the best advice I heard was to not let anxiety feel like it’s a bad thing. It’s actually a natural response your body makes when something is wrong. It helps you know you’re not in the right state of mind. When I feel it in my stomach or mg heart, I normalize it immediately. It’ll be okay and it will pass.

Keep up the great work I suffer from anxiety too it can be the worst. The best thing that I have found for anxiety and panic is to let it happen and don't let it overpower you no matter how intense it might be. When you start to feel anxiety don't fight it let it happen but don't desensitize from it look to ground yourself throughout the panic or anxiety attack. I usually tell my patients to use the grounding techniques when they are feeling anxious. What it does is it keeps you in the present and you don't lose sight of yourself. This can be very difficult when it happens but with practice, it can help you regain control and you will be able to watch your triggers and be able to cope with anxiety faster. I usually go through the rule of three as well even when I'm anxious. I will look around and name three things I can see. Then, name three sounds I hear. Finally, move three parts of my body -- your ankle, fingers, or arm. Overall it holds you accountable for not just you but the environment that you are in. Too many years in psychiatry and learning. Religion helps too but for me, I found talking to someone helped me. As far as depression my wife has depression that's a tough one and I can sympathize with you. I'm glad you are doing well and it is always going to be an uphill battle the part of the battle is having the right tools to protect yourself with and fight. Keep your chin up your doing great and don't forget to take a mental health day or check-in with yourself. I do it all the time I ask myself hey hows it going and what could I work on. Anyways, before I type to much I love your content and you are almost there keep it up!!

Thank you Brandon that was super insightful & appreciated. I’m really glad you brought this up. Yesterday was the first time I went through the process of grounding but I didn’t know there was a term for it. I do not know my main trigger s but whenever anxiety does present itself it’s almost always in the form of throat tightness which leads to panic. For some reason the throat tightness will spiral my emotions. However, yesterday I didn’t push it off or try to ignore it. Instead, I accepted it & looked at it as more of annoyance (like a fly in your room) rather than telling myself my throat is closing & I can’t breath (what usually happens). I will add in the rule of 3’s though. Thank you for watching & I hope you and your wife are doing well.

Thank you for sharing. I'm not a Christian, but ultimately you're talking about faith and I can translate that to my faith quite closely. I've tried so many things to get out of depression but I fall short at every stage. But now I accept that I indeed can't do it alone like you said and that I need God for this journey. I've been neglecting my spiritual health lately. I should get back to it. So, thank you. This was very helpful.

So glad you found this helpful. I hope you've been able to stay the course and continue to feed your soul. Whenever I am discontent or living through the motions, I can also point it back to not being where I need to be spiritually. When I fully submit to God's calling, my life is the most free and content. The world will often do its best to convince you otherwise.

Your video was really helpful, you weren't the only one who had such experience. I had it too with Schizophrenia plus with near depression episodes during the pandemic. After I started reading the Bible, I found out that our experiences are multi-dimensional related. Knowing that I've been with many cultures back in NYC with Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Shinto, and me being born into a Christian family (not that I remembered choosing my own religion before birth). I let go of the fact that God is one sided, letting go of the fact that God is portrayed a white man floating in the sky. God is actually universal. I decided to not put God in one box, but to see how other people view God. In which for me I see God as both male and female. The female presence has been portrayed as evil for too long deeply embalmed in Christianity for many centuries according to my speculation but I am aware that such observation of mine isn't enough. Personally I noticed that the Christian religion is Westernized that is only concentrated to the point that other cultures are marked as demonic. Which I digress, and I find such other cultures labeled demonic as ridiculous. This is the modern world. If we would like to progress humanity, we have to look deeper on the universal truth which is eternal and is personal for everybody. We cannot afford to be close minded anymore, especially during this new pandemic called COVID_19.

A strange assessment of your Bible reading. I think the basic question you're wrestling with is how do we know that the God portrayed by Christianity is more valid than other religions and their concept of a divine. The God that you know may be Westernized, but the concept of the Biblical God being Western is neither here nor there -- you must look at the philosophy and theology underlying it, not so much were it originated from. You also do not put the same standard against Eastern religions on being Eastern-centric.

@@TickleMeElmo55 That I have to work on, I'm just glad I'm out of that rigid mentality before about God when I was younger. There's much to learn and I'm willing to learn. I think it's better in this route than staying in one spot telling myself that everything I've learned so far is correct.

But how can we study while depressed? I have so much difficulty concentrating and studying in med school. I’m always physically and mentally exhausted I’m half able to study but when it comes to revision I feel so tired and exhausted. I feel so sick seeing others studying quick and revising lots of times while I can’t.

It feels like an endless cycle. I understand. I had to change my whole lifestyle around. I put mental health first and studying second and accepted whatever that brought because at the end of the day that matters more than what job you get. I had to start doing things and created habits even if it meant not studying as much (consistent prayer routine, eating three meals a day, running, finding a hobby). Our bodies can’t be on hold for 4+ years. It naturally starts to catch up to us. I tried to turn anxiety back around on itself and welcome it as a friendly reminder that I must not be treating myself well & I have to change instead of being fearful of it.
