I love Richard, he's such a tease. As an Englishman myself now in the States as a US citizen I thought immediately of pudding but I probably would have given a more American colloquialism and said terrier. Glad Richard stuck to his instincts
H/H match update: Plot twist! The contestant is blocked from choosing Brett again due to the new rule, so she goes with Richard for the H/H match (poor Betty must feel like chopped liver sitting there). But Richard easily pulls off his 92nd H/H match. Here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: Orson Bean - 100% (3 wins in 3 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 80% (4 wins in 5 attempts). TIE: Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Betty - 50% (15 wins in 30 attempts). TIE: Fannie - 50% (8 wins in 16 attempts). Charles - 45.7% (16 wins in 35 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 37.14% (13 wins in 35 attempts). Richard - 37.09% (92 wins in 248 attempts). Bert - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 472, excluding the lost/missing episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")
Retro game shows are the only ones I watch, they are not all hype, clapping and cheering and yelling, I don't know who put these silly rules in place, the game show moguls or the network, but holy cow!!
They had a quarterly prize money budget, like all game shows… if they went too long without giving the prize money away, they had to make the questions easier… if they were giving too much away, they made the questions more difficult.
I watched this show from its inception (Match Game '73). I was so popular back in the day the they not only ran it during daytime (along with all the other game shows), but introduced a second prime time version call Match Game PM. I wonder if Richard Dawson knew back then that he would go on to host a show with similar popularity.
Heheheheh! Good one, Ed! But I think leafstigers got it right. Anyway, here's a deli in Ontario, California: www.google.com/maps/@34.0330763,-117.6689733,3a,37.5y,207.16h,88.09t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sQKY4bF-BlL--cHNMTGiuyA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192
I think you two have some other version than this one , CAUSE there just isn't enough air time on Charles to tread his look. He always looks that way. And when I was a kid I always thought my dad was thinking one thing ,when he wasn't. And vice versa.
On a side note Gary was a real dedicated family man ,and after a house fire at his family home ,while he was on location on the mash set, he decided that he needed to be closer to his family to provide them the protection he could only provide from being there he quit mash and got a regular job and one part time gig here on match game...
@@lesburns7395 huh!? I didnt do the interview with Gary, just relaying the information i found on the web... i can assume that the fire was something that maybe started due to carelessness or something that could have been prevented by having been around to do maintenance or something like that...most fires are preventable. 🤔

My answers: Fat (idk I blanked), River, terrier, suntanning, Yul Brynner (I don't know any celebrities of the time so I just guessed what the audience said), innocence
Gary relishes every question where Brett is the butt of the joke but is incapable of laughing at himself. Actually you'd think he'd love the attention.
Doesn’t know what a delicatessen is??!!! 😱There are tons of delicatessens in Toronto Ontario. (Where I’m from) #Shopsy’s #Pancer’s #Druxy’s #theBrownDerby just to name a few. 😏Sherry made Canadians 🇨🇦embarrassed .. she spent too much time in those “figure salons” Whatever the heck that is. Get out and live a little lady
I thought she'd say "terrier" for sure to "Yorkshire". The average American doesn't know what a Yorkshire pudding is. Maybe Americans knew it better back then. They sure don't now.
@@m.e.d.7997 You age isn't important, you can use the internet to have any information you want in your comment. But you have the smarts to use the internet to have an answer, 51 Brownies Points sent to you.
Contestants come up with the strangest gaps in common knowledge, though, that can hardly be anticipated. We've seen contestants, often ordinary Americans, confused by references to Robin Hood, Robinson Crusoe, Captain Hook, and Long John Silver, for example. How much allowance should be made for people who were apparently raised by wolves in some remote wilderness but still choose to go on a show like MG? I refuse to believe that average Canadians did not know what a deli was in 1975 and could not be expected to know. And how do you explain what a deli is in just a few words to someone totally unfamiliar with the concept? Gene's attempt -- canned goods and cold cuts -- would describe a grocery store as well as it describes a deli, and certainly wouldn't immediately make anyone think of chicken soup or pickles or other staple deli items. Yet he couldn't really be any more specific without giving away one or more good answers, which wouldn't be fair to the other contestant. It may be uncomfortable, but no one forced these contestants to apply for the show. They took their chances and no one promised them guidance in the areas of knowledge on which the game is based. Would we expect Alex Trebek to explain Greek history to a Jeopardy contestant who claimed to have never heard of Aristotle?
@@brettmiddleton7949 I like your explanation. I grew up in this era, in a small town, we didn't have "deli's". The only reason I knew what they were, was from watching TV. I think this contestant really didn't know. Plus the embarrassment of being on tv, leads people to sometimes make mistakes. My judgement still lands on the side of this contestant. Very fair points made in your defense of the episode as well. It is interesting that we discuss trivia from so long ago. Thanks for your thoughtful input. Have a great day.
Why should it have been thrown out? Would Alex Trebek throw out a Jeopardy clue because a contestant didn't understand it? ("Sorry, Alex, but I have no idea who Aristotle is. Can you explain Greek history?") MG questions are also based on certain areas of knowledge -- mostly in popular American culture -- as well, and it is up to the contestants to sink or swim. Gene couldn't provide a very explicit description of a deli without using up a lot of time and giving away good answers, which wouldn't be fair to the other contestant.
