The problem for the player who cut the neck of the man who died is that it is illegal to lift your skate as high as he did and it is reported that he has gotten in trouble many times for illegal moves like that.

@@heatheryllanes6925 It's still a pattern of reckless and violent behavior. I don't think anybody is arguing that he murdered the man. But it's simply inarguable that what he did that day was highly unusual in the sense that it was a movement that can only happen as a result of recklessness or malice, and is a movement that does not occur when you play hockey as the rules are written. The fact that the other guy died as a result of these reckless and unusual movements - movements that are *NOT* normal or part of the presumptive risks inherent to the sport - ultimately leads to a single possible conclusion. It is manslaughter.

Played hockey for over 15 years that shit was an accident. You can’t change my mind. Nobody goes on the Ice with the intent to injure somebody it’s a sport of speed. Anything can happen, but that was not on purpose. Shame on you for thinking such.

As a Canadian and surrounded by hockey, this doesn’t look like an accident. You put your feet on the ice at all times. Never would someone put their leg up that far. I think he knew he was going down, because he didn’t make a direct hit on the first guy as he came by and tried to take out the next guy. Never would you kick out and fall like that in hockey. It was definitely intent to injure. I feel so sorry that a life was taken in a sport that give so much joy to fans. A horrible tragedy. 😢

@@iricx7999 yup! This guy wasn’t hit hard enough to have kicked up that high. It would have to have been full impact for him to fly like that. Plus he spread his legs with one skate on the ground. As soon as I saw the video I was like “this was intentional, and this guy is a bad (overly aggressive) hockey player”. From what I have learned now this guy has a history of dirty playing. Glad this guy is getting charged. This should be a lesson to future players, and played as training. The ice is still not immune to the consequences of real life. I think some hockey players see the money you can make and think they are Gods. Any sport is a risk and you have to be proactive to protect yourself and others.

Fellow Canadian agreeing with you. We have seen players get rocked by a hard hit that basically flips them over, and their foot ends up in the air...and they've injured another player, sometimes very badly. But in those cases, you could see that it wasn't deliberate, and the players who inflicted injury were genuinely concerned about the player they hurt. In this case, I don't know how it can't be seen as anything but deliberate. He jumps in order to land his kick on Johnson that high up...both of his feet leave the ice when he jumps!! It even looks like he uses his other foot to brace himself against Johnson's leg, then push off after the kick. I don't know what was going on in his head, but you don't kick anyone in the neck/head/face area with a sharp skate blade unless you're looking to intentionally inflict a serious injury. I hope they elevate the charge from manslaughter, this was definitely more than that.

@@america1st721 I don't see why it would be impossible. 1) He has a history of similar reckless behavior and taking bad penalties 2) the prosecution hired a panel of experts that have analyzed his movements and came to the conclusion they were purposeful which is why he was arrested in the first place 3) all they have to prove is that he was intentionally being reckless, not that he was intentionally trying to maim anyone. @@bridgetonowhere there is an inherent risk when playing hockey. And I asked the attorney why "involuntary manslaughter" wasn't on the table. The same law they use in drunk driving cases. @@america1st721 Like I said, I believe that they can prove intent. In YOUR opinion, intent can't be proven here but many disagree for the reasons I have stated and by using common sense and their eyes. It doesn't matter if there's an inherent risk playing hockey if the guy intentionally lifted his leg. In fact, it further proves how reckless his behavior was because he knows the risks. Also I have played hockey before and have watched thousands of hours of hockey and have never seen anything like this before. His movements do not look like a natural loss of balance or fall, it looks like an intentional kick. Let's see if the defense can find any footage that is comparable.

I was exactly the same as you. I thought to myself that's a terrible accident. But when you slow it down and you zoom in, you see that not only did his leg not need to go up that high regardless of any contact, you see him make an extra knee bend and kick off of Adam. And that's not something that naturally would have happened with that type of motion. And I'm betting that second kick is what killed him. But of course I don't know for sure.
@travisbarry2909
@travisbarry2909 9 месяцев назад
I teach/coach skating everyday, also have a blackbelt so I know kicks too. So I will point out the misinformed view of what Petgrave "does" and does not do. It is near impossible, in full gear, at speed, while turning, while in contact, to lift a foot to 5 feet, let alone to "throw a kick" as so many are saying. Yes Petgrave's leg does come up. The question is how does it get there. If you frame by frame the video you see Johnson cut back, Petgrave turns towards him and attempts to go behind the other white player who is setting a lane pick. As Petgrave turns, his left lead stake contacts the picking player's right skate causing Petgrave's skate to pop up, simultaneously the inside of Petgrave's shoulder is contacted by the right shoulder of the picking player. With the loss of a tractioning edge on his left foot and the added energy from the picking player, Petgrave's center of gravity is shifted from his hip area to chest and shoulder area. In the next frame you can see that Petgrave's right skate also contacts the right skate of the picking player. In the next frame you can see that the other player's momentum has carried Petgrave's weight further over his center of gravity. That extra energy going left to right combined with Petgrave's perpendicular motion and the loss of both of his frictioning edges causes a centrifugal spin (top goes down, bottom come up). Which is evidenced by Petgrave's right skate also leaving the ice, with no "jumping" action(no loading followed by extension of the knees). Petgraves left leg is also not extended as if a kick was attempted. His head is facing the picking player not Johnson. Clearly, to anyone with any actual knowledge and expertise on the physics of skating and hockey collisions, this is just a wild freak accident during a sporting event that is widely known to be "unsafe". Also these players all know this and sign liability waivers. It is absolute dog feces that this got brought to a criminal level.

I'm from Buffalo, and we all watched in horror as Clint Milarchuk, who played goalie, skated out of the net holding his neck as blood was spewing from a severed carotid. UK criminal law applies. Not American. There is no reciprocal enforcement agreement between the US and the UK. The case must be filed in the USA by the family of Adam Johnson (American citizen) and the proceedings and judgement on American soil. Good luck with that since Petgrave is a Canadian citizen...if he ends up returning to Canada, there are a lot of hoops and hurdles to extradite a Canadian citizen to the USA if the manslaughter charge was in another country. As a Canadian, I have seen thousands of hockey games..and at least 5 neck cuts in the Junior league and some were pretty bad..but never criminal charges. Risk of the game. How he feels about x y or z, etc. That’s all you can really ask for. With regards to being open minded, I’d say he’s very open minded. He shook this off as an accident at first, but he revisited it and replayed it many times before saying that it’s very possible it wasn’t. Obviously he still doesn’t know, but he’s always been willing to hear other people’s thoughts, or have facts come out, then reevaluate. And I’d say you have to be pretty open minded to be a lawyer at his age (he’s not old, but he’s not 25) and be reacting to rap videos and stuff like that. He’s always admitted when he has biases, he’s always willing to change his mind when new info comes in, and he uses his personal experience trying cases along with the actual law to come to conclusions. He never does that lightly either. So idk what you really want from him tbh.

I've heard about this incident a lot but seeing the video in slow mode makes me now think he totally did it. I didn't see a slip, doesn't look like he had a foot beneath him that tripped him, if you zoom in you can see him looking at the player right before it happens. Also apparently he had a history for kicking people during games and doing stunts like this. You could also see him use the other team players as maybe a stand in order to get the kick in or to move him out of the way TO kick the other player with his skate.

That's how it happened for goalies after Ken Dryden but I don't think so in this case, the problem with goalies is that they already are low and can be flailing around on the floor at the same time players are crashing the net, this was intentional dirty hit aimed at the belly or upper chest, probably aiming for right under the pads. The problem here hasn't happened before because people don't do this, people are aware of how dangerous skates are and don't try to use them as a weapon, this guy had done it before to great success, if you boot somebody with your hard skate through a jersey you won' cut them, I mean you might slice the jersey and that would look awful but what you will seriously hurt them and wind them and this guy had a history of doing that, he was an intimidator and was mad that this guy was a better player than him and getting the better of him.

After watching the video of the death of Adam Johnson multiple times, I believe this is murder. At first I thought it was incidental contact and accidental, but it becomes apparent that the opposing player Matt Petgrave was targeting Johnson. Yes there was another player in between the two of them, but you can see Petgrave is following Johnson’s path. As Johnson starts to pivot to go behind his teammate, Petgrave puts on the brakes with his right leg (you can see the snow kick up) and lifts his left leg to make contact with Johnson. You may say the intent of Petgrave was to slow down Johnson, but the horror of it all is how high the skate goes. Call it what you want, murder or manslaughter, I see it as intentional.

watch at .25x playback speed. He pushes one of Adam's teammates out of the way, then he uses the momentum from that to help "push off" from the ice and get that leg KICKING REALLY HIGH. He intentionally did this. Whether to hurt him bad by using as much force as possible to stop him in his tracks, or to do worse... it is totally unacceptable. He showed no concern for him as he was hauled off the ice. He had no remorse for what occurred out there. He KNEW it was against the rules to kick so high/have skates in the air like that. I don't doubt he intended him serious bodily harm, but death? Not sure. It was a really SHITTY decision to get that aggressive with another player, and he deserves to pay for what he did. Maybe it will teach him a lesson about how to treat people. I am very sorry for the family who had to see this happen. 😢 They lost their family member due to irresponsible person who felt he was above the rules of the game. Absolutely! Former figure skater and skating coach. Same as the rule against dirty baseball players going cleats up back when the metal cleats were standard. Though figure skates and hockey skates are sharpened into sport specific blade shapes, I’ve seen deep gashes, fingers severed, facial injuries and that’s specifically figure skating. Those blades are razor sharp no matter the type of skating. The first two thing we teach to beginners is how to fall safely when others are flying around on basically the edge of knifes on the bottoms of their feet and tucking fingers into fists, protecting the neck and face, then quickly getting up and off the ice to safety is first lesson. Also we insisted on little skaters barely competent in walking, wearing helmets, knee, elbow, and wrist braces and pads as broken wrists are the most common injury that happens on any icy ground, let alone a skating rink. Hockey is a violent and aggressively competitive sport by its very nature. Blood sticks, vomit bounces off the ice. Raising a bladed boot above the knee is always intentional and there was NO excuse but to cause harm or possibly the player who caused this horrible loss of an innocent man’s life was a soccer player at some time, which is also an excessively violent and aggressive sport. This was absolutely preventable and there is no excuse to bring a blade that high unless it is for intermediate and above figure skaters who have enough room to make those movements- hence the center of most ice rinks designated for young or trained figure skaters to practice in place moves and practice turns without traveling, or practicing the actual figures seen on the center or the ice for leveling up their skills to advance and eventually compete. This was a split second felony move by the former hockey player who now stands a high chance of the district attorney taking this all the way, and there isn’t a single jury, familiar with ice sports or otherwise, would not convict of reckless endangerment and homicide with a deadly weapon. Tonya Harding’s involvement in the crowbar conspiracy, knee attack of her Rival - Nancy Kerrigan was horrific and selfish.. this case @BruceRivers ( & his remarkably talented, handsome like his fantastic father, the generous son, who also has fantastic taste in cufflinks @MichaelRivers), put together a really important show. The main takeaway being, self control, situational awareness, and knowing and understanding the risks of full contact, very competitive and highly aggressive conduct that is so beyond the pale. Enjoy and refine your skills, to those who participate in highly physical sports that can and do cause tempers to flare out of control to the point where life and limb are easily lost, should a player’s emotions get that out of control. It would not be a stretch for teams to have players seek regular therapy as pro sports are so coveted plus the millions are at stake for each pro player. A regular counselor during the season and tai chi, breath work, yoga, or any form of meditation and learning techniques of emotional centering would be ideal for all professional athletes. Time and time we have seen abuse and murders from former pro athletes as their careers begin to stall and they aren’t trained in any other professions to fall back on or never put money away for the eventual day their sports careers were over. Bless Adam Johnson, may he Rest In Peace, and the entire Johnson family whose parents are now faced with the heart wrenching and unnatural ordeal of them burying their son because somebody with no impulse control chose to do the unthinkable. Sending love and good vibes to all and may we all recognize this for what it is. Hold your loved ones a little tighter- even a natural lifespan is so short and humane are fragile. Treasure every bit of good and try to do one thing each day to bring a bit more positivity into a world starved of peace and light in the darkness. Semper Fidelis and love from our family to yours 🇺🇸🤍🙏

@@kevinpacheco9869 Exactly. The previous neck-area injured players were quite low on the ice (like at the goal) when they were inadvertently skated into, or flew into, a skate blade during a *typical collision.* This was NOT typical and appeared to be an intentional hit. Perhaps he was aiming for the chest area (which is super dirty in itself), but the victim here took it at neck level. 😢 The excessive move definitely appears to be manslaughter and the dirty player deserves prison time…in the opinion of many people.

There's video of this zoomed in and frame by frame if you look it up. With the video slowed down that much, you can clearly see Petgrave's skate get caught on the right skate of the person he was checking and it ricochets off. He manages to get that foot back down near that player's left skate where it ricochets a 2nd time off the ice and that player's skate sending it back into the air. At this point BOTH of Petgrave's feet are off the ground and his right foot has more momentum because it didn't get caught on anything. This effectively sweeps his legs from under him and causes his left skate further into the air where it unfortunately struck Johnson in the neck. This was nothing but an unfortunate accident.

This is worse than manslaughter. If he intentionally lifted the skate, it’s because he intended to cause great bodily injury and didn’t care if that led to death or not, and I don’t believe for a second that he somehow accidentally got his foot high up enough to reach a full grown male athlete’s neck. If he raised the skate intentionally - and I firmly believe he did - that wasn’t just reckless and unintentional. In that case, his intention was clearly to harm the victim grievously using a razor sharp blade, period. LITERALLY ANYONE knows what will happen if you ram a razor sharp blade into someone using your entire body weight going full speed on skates. Applying a logical rationale to the facts that I just described shows inarguably that if he raised the skate intentionally, his intention was to kill the victim. Nobody could possibly believe that their victim wouldn’t have been mortally wounded by that action. Even if he’d been hit in the chest, I would still have expected that to be lethal. Even swung slashes from a sword are easily lethal, so it’s plainly obvious that virtually any person would be aware of the result of slamming a blade into someone with hundreds of pounds moving at the speed of an Olympic sprinter behind it. This guy is a lunatic and needs to be locked up, I’d be entirely unsurprised if he harmed or killed somebody else in the future.

I don't think he ment to intentonally hurt him . I could understand if it was 1 on 1 and he did it, but when there is multiple people there assign the passion of sport. Accidents are bound to happen when you have a player that is a rough player , just looked that at the NFL, even with all the regulations players still lose helmates running risk of head, neck, or spinal injury. I know it is not the same as this though where they allow contact accidents are bound to happen.

He didn’t try to hit him in the neck. Their skating and going at speed and the guy fell before the skate was suppose to hit his body to block him Yes horrible timing, yet things happen. Just stop. He’s flying out of control on ice. Hockey is a contact sport, and it’s very dangerous. Not like he took his skate off and stabbed a dude or cracked them with his stick. He was flying 30mph and got his feet tangled and flips upside down. He doesnt even load up and bend to jump if u watch it. Saying he did this on purpose or tried to kick him in the chest or face is funny, but it’s not true. Unless he attempted to defy physics there no intent to cause serious harm. If u watch the slowed down version u can see he flies into the air after he gets his skate tangled with the other player, he like ramps up into the air side ways, it happens a lot in hockey but doesn’t usually slice somebody’s neck.

I believe the kick was intentional, and I don't think that he thought of the potential consequences in the moment because the play was happening so fast. I think he just wanted to take an opponent down to give his team an advantage but it just went horrifically wrong and a man died as a result of that poor decision.

@@smorris281 I think that is greatly underselling what happened. I’m glad to see you and Michael doing a follow up (and continuing to follow) this case. I watched your first video where you really were thinking it was just a freak accident. I thought “hmmm maybe” but my gut was telling me that this guy lifted his skate intentionally to injure Adam Johnson. I do not think he meant to kill him. But, his reckless disregard for how serious an injury he could cause ended up taking a life. I didn’t think it was an accident at all. THEN I heard that this player has racked up more penalties than anyone else and has played dirty before. I was sure my gut was right. I agree with the arrest. This player needs to be held accountable for his actions. I believe he should definitely do time.
