Every time he finishes one of these completely insane runs he immediately starts talking and avoids eye contact to prevent being confronted with overwhelming praise by the interviewer. He is very modest and always wants to share, not to impress.
Matteo is very generous the way he shares his knowledge and skills, and always shows great respect for the other guitarists he mentions. Not only an artist, but also a true gentleman.
What to comment? I'm a fan of Mancuso for a couple of years. This guy defines the humbleness and mastering of a modern guitar player. He's already part of the history and guitar world. He is fast, but he is precise and dynamic. A truly bless to see and hear his work. So inspiring. Keep on going.
@@magic2506 What? he's playing with his fingers stuff that a plethora of other musicians can do with a pick and have done for 30+ years. There's nothing new. There's not even an original sound really. Try listening without seeing - people heard Eruption for the first time and were "WTF!?!?" and the same for many of EVH riffs, intros and solos. But whilst Matteo is clearly very skilled and has unbelievable finger dexterity - it's purely visual. There's nothing I've heard him play that if I heard it without seeing him playing it I'd be "WTF!?!". It's just stuff that every Jazz student plays over changes and versions of others people stuff that wowed us decades ago except now it's played with his fingers. But if you couldn't see that you wouldn't think it was any different from the plethora of people playing other people's stuff on youtube. MO he doesn't have a sound, no unique voice that sets him apart in the way that most guitar players do - even guitarists that aren't particularly virtuoso like Brian May of Queen, David Gilmour, Blackmore et al. They all had a voice. And obviously Vai, Malmsteen, Govan have a voice. What he does have is what all these videos are going on and on about - something that LOOKS amazing and that, prior to him doing it was probably considered impossible my many. But guitar playing is music - an audible thing at the end of the day. Having a technique that only looks good doesn't have legs imo. But yeah he's lightyears ahead of Malmsteen but Malmsteen isn't in the top 500 guitar players.
@@michael1while it is visually impressive, the reason his technique is ACTUALLY impressive is that the way he plays is not something he was taught. He incorporates bass techniques in a way thats as revolutionary as tosins thumping, and I don't say that lightly, animals as leaders is my favorite band. I'm primarily a fingerpicking guitarist and let me tell you... almost no one can play that fast with their fingers on command like he does. I've seen plenty of guitarists do it in short licks, but he can do it non stop clean and effortlessly.
@@DaTLMusic Sorry to burst your bubble but the 2 techniques he uses, one has been in use for a few hundred years and the other is decades older than he is. As for playing fast that generally started as a way of impressing tone deaf morons, but ok even if we accept that as a thing there are thousands of guitar players who can play as fast or faster than him. His chosen technique is limiting how fast he can play - of course this doesn't really matter but if you're bringing it up as thing that matters to you, he'd be better off learning to pick. The fact they don't use their fingers is pretty immaterial - the reason for this is - it's like finding someone who can hop really fast - just run instead and you'll be faster. His clean playing is 99% down to the dampening he uses - anyone can put one of those on his guitar and achieve the same. To some extent there is, once again, a typical moron convention amongst guitarists that using a damper of some kind is "cheating" or bad - so if Matteo has silenced them he has achieved something - but don't be silly and waffle about how clean his playing is - just get a fret wrap, put it on your guitar and now your playing is clean too. If you're impressed only because he seems to picking in a new way that you can't do that's just a visual gimmick. Does the next guitar player need to pick with his feet to be impressive? Like I said, do the test, get someone else to listen to the music without watching - and they'll probably say "He's good but there's nothing new here" - and then you find yourself saying "Ah but you have to see him play because he's using his fingers" - well, that's a fail isn't it? When millions of people were blown away by Eruption, for example - it was for the sound - the music - yes there was this strange tapping thing you could see - but the tapping was done to create a novel sound. Playing music is really about sound - the noise you get - and as I said, for me there's really nothing particularly impressive. He's a good guitarist but he's not standing out today like Jimi Hendrix did in his day or EVH did in the 70s. Or, I would argue, several different guitarists are today because people like Tosin and Henson have a novel approach to the sound, i.e music. Bottom line is : the only point in having a thumb technique or a finger technique is if it adds something to the sound. Unless we're supposed to turn the sound down and just watch Matteo or listen to something else?
@@michael1 not being limited to a pick means he can switch to classical style instantly, its a versatility thing not a speed thing. He can play fast enough without a pick that he will never need to use it. Out of curiosity, do you know of any guitar plays who can fingerstyle like him? I actually want to hear them
Matteo is up there with thee greats .. Paco da Lucia...Al de Meola just to name a few...and he's so young aswell. Wishing him lots of success on his worldly tour.
Guillaume, nice interview, and how you manage to contain your enthusiasm is impressive! Don't know if I could do that in his masterful presence. Matteo is redefining the modern playing method into an art-form. Extraordinary musicianship. Thanks for this video!
I really get bored to tears by shred players and the embarrassing "pentatonic blues benders", this is absolutely beautiful playing. So expressive, and a joy to watch the fluidity.
Matteo is so extremely gifted. His tone is perfect and he is so accurate and fast. His manual dexterity is exceptional. But also an incredible musical feeling that will no doubt keep developing.
I would love to comment - But what could I say that Matteo haven't already said. There comes a guitar player like this every 100 years - last one was Paco De Lucia. Now we have Matteo to calm our nerves and make life beautiful. Thank you. By the way - We love Sicily and now, even more 🤗
Matteo has serious Knowledge of Jazz chords and scales and you can hear it in his playing.Hes very musically intelligent as well as the classical fingerpicking style. Hes great❤
Matteo is really an incredible guitarist, I actually admire his musical development on the instrument, knowing a little more about his sound in this interview is valuable for me. All my admiration for this guitarist. As we say here in Colombia "capo"
It seemed there couldn't be much left to say in the world of the guitar and instead HE arrived: Matteo Mancuso. Matteo managed to invent a new approach to playing guitar, managing to amaze all the greatest guitarists in the world.
I'm not inspired by him at all, on the contrary... I have a strong disgust, it's my personal opinion..., but a person who tears his nails out of his hand and installs plastic parts in order to have a A better performance on the instrument... It's a squalid scam... as well as inhumane.
@@key_session Pic is plastic, Slide Steel , Glass and more , Finger technique, different personal touch and this is what all is about.. Everyone have own taste and open mind is good to have. 👍
He's an awesome player but as a teacher every time he talks about his technique he's firing off rapid fire notes, he doesn't ever slow it down to say hey this is what I'm really doing. He just flies through notes I'm sure when he was learning he was slowing it down and taking his time but when you show somebody something why do you just fly through notes and say, that's how you do it.
This is the second time after watching Rick Beato interview that i'm seeing a young Guitarist playing like this, exceptionally graciously and in full control.
It was refreshing to see Matteo make a little mistake at 17:10, because I was convinced he wasnt human until then lol. He's so incredibly talented, and Im mesmerized at his abilities.
Funny that Matteo's lead tone is inspired by Eric Johnson and Alan Holdsworth, Shawn Lane was inspired by these tone and I think that means a lot of things about Matteo's playing
I prefer limoncina by far. It's similar but made with Aloysia citriodora's leaves, typical from the Parma area. If you like limoncello, limoncino (sometimes called "limoncina") is a must.
Thank you for the FANTASTIC video! You covered his equipment and his right hand technique but I have heard Mataeo mention in other videos that many players could not play a lot of his lines because of his left hand fingerings. Could you have him talk about that in a future video please? And if he uses legato techniques like hammer ons and pull offs or does he pick every note? Left hand technique would give us the whole picture. Thank you again for the amazing video and for reading my lengthy request.
Matteo carries himself like he is a wise 50 year old man. Very willing and humble. He makes anyone feel like they would want to hang out and have conversation with him.
Matteo Style is awesome 👍 his finger style techniques are brilliant, from classical, blues ,rock ,fusion Jazz, and even shred guitar, with a touch of Chet Atkins. 👍
Interview géniale !!! Et son jeu est juste interstellaire telleement c'est riche et mélodieux en même temps. Ce garçon peut tout jouer sans l'impression de forcer. Le plaisir rien de plus.
I am unsure why it is so complicated? He trained classically and learned, in his own way, how to incorporate it into a smaller scale (electric guitar). For him it works, for you and I, it will never work. Like VH, Malmsteen, Satch, we spend so much time worrying about how they do it, instead of working on our own techniques and songs. Nobody will ever play like Mancuso just like he will never play like you do.
Very well said. Like he described his position on putting together an album. Why does it need to be one style when he has multiple styles and abilities. He chose to not use a pick. It is the way he evolved encompassing metal first, then classical styles then jazz, rock etc. His dad is also an accomplished guitarist and obviously a big influence. There 's no two classical painters or classical composers that are alike. Each to his own technique and style.
@@rainscratch Indeed and in a googol of time, nobody will recall, remember or know a single thing we ever experienced. We all propose to know the answers to "our thing" but in 200 years nobody will know or care. In 2,000 years we will be a forgotten and not even spoken-of generation. Once we realize how non self-important we all are - we grow to learn we mean nothing except to those around us and that is all that truly matters. Wars are never won, no guitarist will ever be the best.
Mind Blowing♥. . .he truly is the evolution of Guitar Playing 🙏🙏🙏. . . an overdose of inspiration and a constant reminder as to how much more there is to learn ( probably a life time is not enough )🙏🙏🙏
Very outside the box right hand technique only as it is applied to the electric guitar. There have been 5 great innovators imo: Jimi Hendrix, EVH, Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale, and Stanley Jordan. Each contributed something new to the way we play the instrument. Mancuso took a little from Flamenco guitarrists like Paco de Lucia, Antonio Rey and has applied it to the electric guitar, but his lines sound very Gambale like, especially certain arpeggios he uses. Personally Gambale is still my favorite guitarrist because he is an overall better musician, but when he passes away I think it will be Mancuso.
This playing is absolutely insane! Im gonna buy the same guitar and see what happens!😂 Matteo, play whatever you want on your next album. go ahead, mix it up!
Agree he is a genius at playing and theory. I'm afraid to report guitars don't come with skill. Agree that his albums are all about Matteo and if can play 10 styles put it all in.
Stop & go that >07:53 (zoom) The Nails Torn from the Flesh, Synthetic nails put in their place?!, So says Mancuso; Tearing your nails... Can you imagine the scene?!..., 07:48 (stop&zoom) le unghie strappate dalla carne? Unghie sintetiche messe al loro posto?!, Così afferma Mancuso, con una motivazione che fa ridere. Strapparsi le Unghie... Riesci a immaginare la scena..?!; 09:15 this, this here... a normal person, a human person, can't do it, they would hurt themselves... physical harm, it's anti-human. questo, questo qui.. una persona normale, umana, non lo può fare, si farebbe del male.. male fisico, è anti umano.
Is there anyone as interesting as this dude? PUT MATTEO ON A STAGE OR IN A ROOM WITH BELA FLECK ON BANJO, MARK O'CONNOR ON FIDDLE, CHRIS THILE ON MANDOLIN and the world would stop spinning as they played. Jerry Douglas on dobro would be also heavenly. It's not like they would settle on any specific genre and would explore many, but I could die happily if they played only Bluegrass, like it's never been played before. Matteo playing Tony Rice or Doc Watson would be something to experience.
I remember back a few decades ago as a young aspiring guitarist, attempting to study the chops of a myriad of diverse players from Blackmore, to Beck, to Lifeson and many more. Then, one day, I dropped the needle on the first UK record. It was my younger brother, a drummer, who first directed my attention to one Allan Holdsworth... good God! Maybe, I should just mothball my beloved '75 Stratocaster and be done with it!!!! Now to the present and this Mancuso guy! Does anyone want a Vintage '75 Strat? Unbelievable! And he's only in his mid twenties!
It's not a secret, he already told this many time, it's a mix of classical and flamenco technique, only he use it with the electric guitar and of course he is very good at it.
I am FAR from being a virtuoso as Matteo, but I have been using a similar technique for a few years. No more playing with a pick. I think it is inspiring, gives a lot of dynamics and expression to your playing. I really enjoy it !
Speaking as a classical guitarist, I see nothing in his playing technique that is technically innovative nor out the what could be expected from any professional level classical guitar performer. Granted, the musical style to which the techniques are directed are unexpected, but modern classical technique has evolved specifically to meet the demands of a wide range of musical styles, so why not? The major musical challenge is for the techniques to be adapted to control the very different sustain characteristics of an electric instrument and its amplification. that aside it's all rather ordinary.
Of course. Classical guitar is played with -guess what- a five finger hand, of which four fingers are used most of the time. There’s no effects, so there’s no specific technique to compensate for any issues. That’s why no one is expecting innovations in classic guitar. Most little innovations in guitar fingering or picking technique are compensatory.
Mancuso is the greatest guitar player i have heard since 1985 when i heard Scott Henderson he is a phenomenal player But HE REALLY need a real amp/amps and real cabs.
Mancuso.. hey is so on anher plane!!, humble, nice guy, he explains what he's doing... The best ever. It reminds me a little bit of Mark Knopfler. Mark is so down to earth
The guy is just a monster player in a well rounded way.He sounds natural. You are great too interviewing this cat talking to him about all the juicy stuff and sounds technical aspects in player techniques applications and thinking processing to finish.Awsome fellow musicians. Please keep up the awesome job and please continue to share. GOD BLESS YOU AND EVERYONE ALWAYS AMEN.
A truly phenomenal guitarist. I don't think it's crazy to suggest already that he may be a generational talent. And gorgeous guitars too, really nice to see Yamahas get a little spotlight, such tremendous build and value, throughout their ranges and their top end stuff is more than a match for the major US brands.
Matteo is very fast with his small hands... But flexible... I learned my technique from Andrés Segovia's books many years ago... And watching live videos with Paco de Lucia... Matteo have a good technique... But his music is not really my cup of tea... When it comes to "fusion" Allan Holdsworth have always been the greatest... The chord voicings and harmony he created is wonderful, beautiful and amazing... A new tonal language... Holdsworth and Bach is a great balance... They really are the most important composers for me... 🎼🎶🎵🎶
