Mavis Beacon Teaches Markiplier Typing 

I am now 10 minutes in and I'm starting to suspect this ISN'T a horrifying experience disguised as a teaching game..

I fully expected this to be a typing horror game, no it's just Mark learning how to type.

"Relax your shoulders; you should never feel tense when you keyboard" - Mavis, after telling you how strictly upright and disciplined you should be sitting, claws extended.

I took a typing class in middle school. 90% of it was the teacher explaining the importance of correct posture. I was convinced that if I ever slouched while typing I would get carpal tunnel and just fucking die right there.

Who knew Mark's ability to break games would extend to even Mavis Beacon

I specifically remember computer class in elementary school. We all would open Mavis Beacon but we didn't have headphones, so you just hear about 25 Mavis's talking at the same time and it was absolute hell. Some of use were smart enough to turn the volume off.

In my public high school in 2005 , this was a 1 credit semester "typing class" Just a bunch of teens in a room with hot computers, a teacher at a desk playing baby sitter, and this playing from all 20 at once. Because if we had headphones on we could be "doing something else." This is a horror game.

I was expecting this to be some horror game based on typing teaching software. But I just got 40 minutes of pure laughter from Mark being tortured by a genuine 80's typing education program xD

The one I had as a kid was a typing program called "Spooky Teaches Typing," where the teacher was a ghost, and the speed tests were "haunt" minigames. Like one I remember, the faster you typed accurately, the higher you'd levitate a television and freak out the guy watching it.

Holy shit I just remember doing the games in a “computing lab”, me and my friends just raced. Good times.

This was genuinely one of the weirdest things we had to learn in school, it was so starkly different to everything else and now that I'm an adult I realize it was likely just preparation for office work as an adult, I mean I game on PC as an adult now so I might be a bit predisposed to overlooking how much I use and am familiar with a keyboard but I feel like this strange, stringent posture and hand position on home keys was way over the top for just typing shit up

There's something undeniably charming about this program. I learned typing on a different program than Mavis Beacon, but there's just something about educational/"productive" programs from that time period that never fail to make me smile.

Never thought I would have nostalgia for my girl Mavis Beacon.

This video almost had me in tears. It has 'Ethan learning how to read' vibes and I laughed just as hard. I don't think I used Mavis in middle school, but I used something like it so this hit a nostalgic bone for sure. I love content like this; my funny bone requires more!

I remember the week where the computer teacher tried to force everybody to type like this, and I remember, at around 8 years of age, I looked the teacher dead in the eyes and said, "I promise you that nobody will ever actually type like this."

It somehow makes me laugh really hard that he can't backspace so he just has to live with words like ldadl (Le-Dad-el) and the look on his face when he sees those on screen is priceless. Then Lixian mocking him with the Thati s jnute caption was perfection.

i am viscerally reminded of every typing session i went through from third to fifth grade and i have just tapped into the deeply hidden and hard-as-stone hatred i had for every fucking minute i spent inside that particular classroom in front of that screen. That voice reminds me of every failure and every time i nearly broke down in the middle of the day because i just couldn't get the hang of those stupid typing games and i felt like i was messing something up so profoundly easy that i was the biggest loser for not getting it. and today? i dont type the right way at all. if i worked in an office they would be appalled. i type like i did as a fucking 8 year old being allowed on the computer for the first time with two fingers tap-tap-tapping. fuck this program.

As a translator, I just gotta say that those stretching exercises were good. I was working at the same time I was watching this video and, after working all day, I actually did loosen up a little after doing them 😅 I might remember to take breaks to stretch from now on. Everything about this is so viscerally hilarious, Mark's panic over typing, his utter confusion over posture, the boppin music that plays at the beginning if each 'video', Marks sheer dedication, the fact that so many people came here expecting a horror game, and on top of all this, this 'game' makes me nostalgic for the 90s despite the fact that I was born in 2004 and stopped having to take typing classes in 4th grade.

I remember that once you got more "advanced" your teachers would give you these rubber covers for the keyboard to stop people from looking while they're typing, ah, you've brought me back to the simple times of childhood and being so excited to be able to play Oregon Trail when finished the lessons.

We did touch-typing when I was in school, and I loathed it with a fiery passion. I look at the keyboard when I type, had to for years because those lessons did not help me learn. What finally did help me? Playing keyboard-dependent video games on my PC. I mostly play in the dark, and after a while I just learned from rote where all the keys are in relation to each other. Probably my biggest hurdle (and subsequently my best teacher) was ARK: Survival Evolved. Sooooo many keybindings to remember in that game! Between that and modded Minecraft, I no longer have to do my old hunt-and-peck style unless I'm typing something long-winded like these comments on RU-vid. The only real problem I have these days is switching from real keyboards to the one on my phone and the one on my ipad, because they all have slightly different layouts for the punctuation and I find that really irritating, but it's not the end of the world. Also, that program not allowing you to use backspace is stupid. They should have two modes, compare your speed and accuracy when allowed to use it with your speed and accuracy when not allowed. I think their concern is that a sloppy typist will be slower, but you can get pretty fast at correcting your mistakes on the fly if you're aware you hit the wrong key (which I pretty much always am, and from Mark's frustrated noises, he was, too). The assumption, in my eyes, is that you're hitting the wrong keys from inexperience...I've been typing since I was 5, so that's not my problem. I hit the wrong keys because my hands twitch. They always have, they always will. I've learned to work around it.

As a person of roughly similar age- When you said "smell the late 90's aesthetic" I have a flash back to that new plastic and rubber smell you had when you bought a new computer/hardware. The smell that wreaks of Staples and office supplies because you have to buy some 3 1/2 A floppys and mouse cleaner because the ball inside is all gummed up.
