This is my first time heavy towing with a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Trail Boss and I must say, don't let the squat fool you...
Special Thanks to Fitzgerald Auto Mall in Frederick, MD for allowing me to do this test!

Pro tip: when you are getting close to the ball, hit the camera button again and it will zoom in. More importantly it automatically puts the park brake on when you shift into park so it doesn’t roll back on you

I have a 2021 Silverado 1500 Custom TrailBoss crew cab. I towed my 2019 Pj dump trail which is 4,300 lbs empty then got a load of just shy of 3ton of pavers. A total of towing 10,300lbs which is about 1000lbs over my max towing. I can say with the proper hitch set up the truck pulled the load very well and got about 12-15mpg while doing so. That type of towing I will hardly ever do with that truck it’s just not made for that much weight but my point is at its max towing even exceeding it by 1000lbs it did well, shouldn’t be done but it did just fine.

Super honest, thorough, and fair towing reviews. I love this series. I recently went from an 18 Silverado to a 20 Tundra. I tow a travel trailer that is probably around 7000lbs loaded through the hills of WV. The Silverado was great, but to me the rear ends made all the difference when towing long steep grades. The Tundra tows those hills at much lower RPMs at the same speeds and just gives a much better sense of confidence. Not to mention due to that I also found the Tundra to get noticeably better fuel economy towing the same camper. And with the tundra having a 38 gallon fuel tank versus 26 in my Silverado that really impacted my decision especially with my towing environment and often lack of gas stations. That is a perfect trailer setup you have, towing without weight distribution or sway control options so we really just get to see truck versus truck. And you are creeping up toward max capacities of half tons so you really get to see the difference in how the trucks perform.
@JB_WhoWork

@mtower235
@mtower235 3 года назад
@@zackwashburn4469 yup don’t get me wrong. It works through the hills but it’s not overtaxing it. I’ve done these trips with a lot less powerful engines and transmissions. It’s does sag a little more than my old long bed 2WD but to be expected. The trade off for an off road truck is well worth 1” more sag. I’ll have a front receiver and my winch up front by deer camp time as well.

The owners manual says you’re required to use a distribution hitch on that model with 8500lbs as you said. You basically had a dangerous setup there, where the front end doesn’t have enough weight and will induce sway, especially when making emergency maneuvers.

I have the same truck and I just got done going through this. I have a 27 ft boat w/ a dry weight of 5500 lbs. Add fuel (90g @ 6.3 lbs/g): 567 lbs Add water: (14g @ 8.4 lbs/g): 118 lbs Add toys: (bumpers, life vests, etc): 200 lbs Add weight of trailer: ~1800 lbs Total trailered weight: ~7367 lbs (8185 - 818 :: 10% of weight transferred to tow vehicle) My truck, much like yours has a: Curb weight: 5500lbs Add extras (like bed cover, bed liner): 200 lbs Weight Distribution Hitch: 100 lbs Weight transferred from trailer: 818 lbs People: 375 lbs (just assumed 2 adults - me and wife) Total vehicle weight: 6993 My truck is within limits .... but barely. Truck GVWR: 7000 - I'm at 6993 lbs Truck GCWR: 15000 - I'm at 14360 lbs Max hitch weight: 950 lbs - I'm at 918 lbs When we're on the road, we just need to make sure not to order more than 7 lbs of food. ;) Alternatively, instead of 10% of the weight on the hitch, I could reduce it to 7%, but then you lose a bit of stability which I'm not keen on. As for the squat ... change in gap between fenders is minimal with the proper weight distribution hitch.

Especially appreciate your reviews of trucks with some miles on them. The one you did with a Duramax having 200K miles was great also. Not all of us can buy a brand-new truck. I am trying to decide what to upgrade my tow vehicle to. I have a 2001 GMC Sierra with the 5.3L pulling an 8,000-pound travel trailer in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Even though it has 270,000 miles it still pulls very well with the exception of nearing the 11,000-foot passes. At those altitudes, it is in first gear (out of 4), working hard, and engine temp is warming (not hot). I am considering the GMC 6.2L max trailering package 1500 with 3.42 differential or an LML Duramax in the HD size. The 6.2L has an 8-speed tranny, which is very appealing, but it would lose about 1/3 horsepower at 11,000 feet just like any naturally aspirated engine. I only go camping about 3 times a year so, I am not sure the LML Duramax is justified. The 6.2L max trailering vehicles are extremely hard to find though.

@matthewanderson9912
@matthewanderson9912 3 года назад
Good review guy. Definitely looked better going down the road when the tractor and trailers passed you. Couple observations from me: I usually have my brake gain set on about 5 or 5.5. I like for the trailer to be able to stop me in level ground going say 4 or so mph without sliding. It definitely squatted the 3.25” and I still say these big heavy trailers need a 3/4 ton truck for regular towing. However i think with the TrailBoss having a 2” lift from the factory exaggerates how much it’s really squatted. Could be wrong about that but I do know with my 2020 Duramax it’s almost dead level with about 3/8” rake from the factory so it even looks more squatted than the previous generation trucks because they had a 2” rake from the factory. Anyways good job. I’ve said it before but I love your trailer! I wish mine was 28’.
@JB_WhoWork
@JB_WhoWork 3 года назад
Thanks Matthew! I agree that this truck and other GM trucks sit more level because a 3.25" is within normal drop. anything over 3.5 is probably unsafe without support. The Trailer Brake somehow was really aggressive at 3 gain but my trailer is brand new so that's my guess on why I'm setting it so low. My Fifth Wheel is at 6.5 gain and it isn't as strong. Thanks for sharing!

Loyalist typically buy Tundra but the truck doesn’t compete well with either, Chevy has better tech features and more packages to choose from, but Titan has the XD and I feel like it’s more capable then the rest of the half tons. Does this truck have the “Max Trailer Package”? I just Purchased earlier this year a 2020 1500 Custom 5.3 4x4 with the Max Trailer Package. Came with 3.73 gears. I pull a 2800 pound boat. Factory Door labels claim that this truck can tow 11,000 pounds. Have you had any experiences with this tow package. By the way great show, good information I just subscribed.

6.2 ? 5.3? Tundra has 5.7 381hp, 401fpt. 437 gears. 5.3, 355hp, 383fpt, 323 gears. Some im confused how the chevy pulls better. Trans?

The Ford has a 3.5 V6 and that thing could pull for days. Engine size/gearing works different on a 10 speed transmission especially if you look at 1st/final drive

Without even watching this video you should not be towing this down the road. Your rear axle is overloaded and you front axle is underloaded. You absolutely need a weight distribution hitch for this as well as your other video with the 3.5 eco boost. You will feel sway , the truck will feel like a giant is pushing down and shoving it side to side. On top of that you have taken enough weight off the front axle to diminish steering and barking ability.

I've been a silent follower of many you tubers like yourself, that mainly deal with all things trucks and towing. I Darn near live full time in a TT and have been for the last 10 years. I am on my 3rd TT and 2nd truck. My question not only to you but everyone is, where are we getting the 20% of the GVWR tongue or pin weight from? I have been going on that formula for years. Well I just recently purchased a tongue weight scale from etrailer. Item# E99044. My sticker numbers are UVW 6927 GVWR 8595 CCC of 1609 ( I actually lost some CCC because this unit was ordered with 2nd AC). According to manufacturers website I have a hitch weight of 940lbs. If I did 20% of GVWR that puts me at 1719lbs of tongue weight . Problem is the scale gave me a reading of.....wait for it....950lbs!!!🤔. Yes thats with 2 full 30lb tanks, battery, and trust me all of the stuff plus...that we full timers load in RVs. I didn't have my fresh water full but, it sits behind my axles and that would have only lowered my tongue weight. Even still my black tank may have been 3/4 full of a 45 gallon tank that also sits behind axles. Which kinna mimics the way I tow with fresh water at least 3/4 full. BTW, this is a front kitchen Forest river 26fkbs. I have not been able to run my rig over a CAT with the new truck yet so I don't know scale numbers. But son....I'm at a loss. Why 20%? I can see it maybe for fifth wheels....but across the board?. Maybe I need to run it across the scales to see how much weight is on TT axles?...and that's another mind blower!!..when it comes to axle ratings and weight distribution hitches and how much weight they transfer to TT axle or axles,possibly putting you over axle ratings...😖...to hell with it...gonna drink a beer. Its 7:30 am!
@JB_WhoWork
@JB_WhoWork 3 года назад
I apologize if I stated across the board but for TT, I would use 10% and adjust accordingly to length and floor plan layout. 20% is extremely high for a pull behind TT but I wouldn’t buy my truck based off of 10% tongue weight, I would use 12% to make it worse case but if you have a 3/4 ton and up, as long as you have at least 2300# payload and don’t carry heavy toys in the bed, you should be fine 👍🏾
