One option would be to add a layer of fine bark to the top of your pots in order to improve water retention. You can also get some outer pots that fit closely to reduce water loss through the slits. This way you don't have to repot anything.

I often leave a small reservoir at the bottom of my orchids and most really enjoy it. Even many phals.

You can try adding just a top layer of sphagnum moss instead of fully repotting your orchids that seem to need more moisture retention.

What i did was not take orchid out of pot, instead i just moved the bark aside and removed some ,then balled up spagnum wet it and pushed it into medium deep as i could , a pencil helps. Good luck ! Luv your channel ! PS ...if orchids were easy peasy probably none of us would be here.

hi Michael , have you ever given thought to just top dressing with spag moss of about 5 to 10mm press in well you will not have to repot them again and the moss will keep the media below damp, this could be a good alternative to repotting, I do this with cattleyas that have few roots repot in new media and then give a good layer of moss until the plant is up and growing well. then I remove the moss and put media back inits place. you mighr find this a alternative than disturbing them again. remember press it in well

I think the problem that you are seeing with some is probably due to significant attrition of the old root system and the new root system is not sufficient to support the plant fully. Watering more often is not the answer to the problem in that case, a period of dryness will force the plant to expand the roots more significantly. With the Aloha Sparks, you really should cut the spikes, as holding the double spikes is really a draw on resources. If I forget to water Onc. Heaven Scent while it is growing a new growth, the bulbs will shrivel a little. If I forget to water it when it is in spike (or double spike, as it is now), those bulbs will shrivel mightily. It has plenty enough roots that they will rehydrate within a day if I soak it, but it is amazing the difference in energy/water needs during flowering than during growth. So, cut those two spikes and let the plant start a new growth or two and push on a new root system, don't mess with the potting mix just yet.

Great advice!

Your oncid in the beginning probably needs to have the spikes removed. it just hasnt gotten to the point to where the roots, that are adjusting to new medium, cannot support the plant AND the spikes. You could try to cut one spike and see if she bounces back faster.

Always great watching your videos. You're one of the growers who inspired me to try semi hydro. I grow mainly phals. However even after more than 8 months, the roots don't seem as good. Is it normal? I have transitioned some back to sphag n pumice for now. And yes I agree with you on the organic medium drying out too quickly and I'm wondering if I should try pure sphagnum. Living in Tokyo with dry winters and humid rainy seasons and summers. Would love your take on it.

Please check out this other orchid lover, orchid Dee, she does a high bark and high moss ratio, she excels in what you’re having an issue with. I really hope you see this message!

A friend gave me a blue orchid. I had never seen one. Research showed me that it was a white injected with food colouring. Have you ever done that ?

Micheal I have two orchid's..one is beginning to get soft leaves...not terribly bad but am still concerned. They are in full bloom... my question is : do I wait til they have lost their last flower or can I use your tea hydrating now?
