I agree that Ninja orchids has an amazing channel. She's very experienced and I love watching. Semi hydro can work well, but in my experience, the minute an orchid gets root bound like the psychopsis you have to repot it and make sure there's good air between the roots or it'll slowly decline. Lots of flushing to air in there is helpful too. Been enjoying watching your collection evolve these past two years! That epidendrum is a MONSTER 👹❤️

Awwhh 🤗🙌🏼 thank you, Michael, so much for such a kind and generous shout out 🙏 i really appreciate it, its hard to describe! Thank you 🥰 I have been watching you since the days when you were showing how you clean your leca and physaning (new word) i rarely commented because you were always so thorough and when you did pose a question, the answer was already in the comments, so... yeah 😬 as in this case, Michael McCarthy already pointed out the then and how your busy schedule has come to the now 👍🏼 never a bad thing to switch culture to match the orchids' needs and our needs. Your psychopsis though 🤪🥊 once again, thank you for your kind words 🙏

Michael You look fantastic in the video! Thanks for sharing your methods of grow medium to classic bark medium. Living in the tropics my indoor orchids get mucky in hydro. I'm all bark. I always look forward to your updates thanks!

Hey Michael. That is what happened with mine as well in semi-hydro. I saw Here But Not 's take on it and I switched all mine over and the same thing occurred; They popped roots and did tons better. It was crazy how fast and well they took off.

I agree about Ninja Orchids🤗 might try bark in my outdoor orchid garden as well, my orchids are not in semi hydro but im using inorganic media. Most of them are great but it’s good to try other media😊

I love Nina. I have been following her for a little over a year now. She has been an exciting source of info and more than willing to advise you on any problems. I love her thoroughness. Her advise got a nodosa to bloom for me that I had had for 4 seasons and was about to throw away. I got 8 blooms from it this year. She really knows her stuff! Glad to see you.

Michael. I have been saying for years that orchids do well in semi-hydro but they will only last a couple of years at the most. Keeping an orchid and its roots wet for long periods of time is definitely a no-no. The plants are doing better because you are giving the plants access to air. Regarding fertilizer have a go at trying phostrogen with the addition of a smallish amount of Epsom salts.....you'll be surprised at the new growths. Love taking a look at your videos....I should comment much more....take care, Ed.

Thank you so so much for remembering the shout out to Ninja Orchids, even though life may be crazy. 🤗 In regards to your plants stagnating in s/h, it may be a matter of your ability/availability to flush. When you're pouring through water, you're bringing oxygen down into the container where it may have been used up. That's just a guess based on how your life has changed in the past 3-4 years and by comparison with how Nina maintains hers.

Think about it.orchids generally grow around bark,so receive some nutrients when bark is wet.

Yes! I love Ninja Orchids! Her videos are always so informative. Beyond the information, she is a wonderfully kind and thoughtful person. Thank you for the information in this video. I have been mulling over the possibility of using semi-hydro with my indoor plants and you have given me a lot to think about.

In my experience, orchids ADAPT to inorganic substrates and utilise stored nutrients to survive for years. After a certain period of time they seem to lose it all of a sudden and the reason might be that the adaptation period cannot last forever. Organic setups have the disadvantave of repotting every couple of years but they generally achieve the best levels of growth.

Hi Michael! I recently lost a lot of my orchids' roots while in water culture, & something made me put them all back into bark. I had mixed feelings about it, but you made me feet BETTER! And they are perking up!

I think the reason your #28 is stagnating but trying is because of the medium. It needs tiny tiny pea gravel with a little dirt mixed in, but more pea gravel. I had one that I transplanted from its pea gravel to a larger gravel and it went down hill and died, I couldn't get it back.

I had the same issues and have recently started moving all my orchids from semi-hydro back to bark. They were okay at first but have seemed to never fully adjust. They have quickly started to create new roots and leaves since moving back to bark.

Hello Michael hope you doing great , this is first time that I will comment this long , I love your update so much and I watched them every episode it’s like friends to friends chatting about their collection experiences , you make me realize that having orchids doesn’t need to have green house or big space outside it just easier and fun ! Sometimes we might have issue with them but eventually it’s even more fun to solved that issue !! And at the end they will reward us with beautiful flowers !! However I think the point of having orchids is not only flowers but it is how we enjoy taking care of them in every stage of plant ❤️ I have question , how often you water your plants usually ?

Hi Michael, How can I grow/cultivate orchids inside my house during winter here inCanada, Thanks .
@florida23
@florida23 2 года назад
Hi Jimmy I lived in Alberta and grew orchids. Im in south Florida tropics now but I always placed my orchids near south facing windows away from cold and heat drafts & use alot of mist at the roots. AM light was a necessity in winter months. Even in Florida my indoor orchids-I always let my orchids sleep, turning off grow lights at night. I had really hard water in Canada so I always used bottle water. The mineral deposits get really bad if you have hardwater.
