This segment features the major tornado that swept across a 54 mile path causing F5 damage in Bridge Creek and Moore, OK. It starts 2 miles S of Anadarko and continues all the way to the SW parts of Oklahoma City where Val and Amy run into extensive damage at 149th and May Ave.

@@cojack5941 he is still in the field. Guy called stormspottermike on here as videos of news broadcasts from last month and val is on them. Takes balls made of solid brass to do what he does. Camera quality is amazing for the year it was made and enjoyable to watch, much better than videos where the camera is constantly moving and chasers just been loud.

Well, all things considered, 1999 wasn't exactly the Dark Ages. The technology we take for granted at the swipe of a finger on a smart phone didnt just happen overnight. It is just more readily available to the average Joe now. England and the higher ups at 9 didn't just say "Hey, Val, go run down this 300+mph monster and give us your ameteurist commentary on its general location." Val is a professional and was an employee, hence given the needed technology to do his job.

Well, this was 17 years ago.... communications out in the field are not what they are now.... he was probably using a car phone.... they had no live stream of the tornadoes to send. Yeah, but they got where they needed to go. He had to call out to Gary a lot because back at the station, Gary England (THE WORLDS BEST) was live on the air.... how else was he supposed to get the man's attention.... plus you must also consider the "heat" of the moment. Val Castor is THE WORLDS BEST man in the field for live tornado coverage. If, during a tornado, that man said jump... nearly all of Oklahoma would ask "How high, Val?" RESPECT TO VAL AND HIS LOVELY WIFE FOR SAVING COUNTLESS LIVES OVER THE YEARS!!!!! I just wish Gary had not retired!

May, 3, 1999 I was 18 years old and living with my boyfriend (Now husband) so this was my first storm away from home and I was the one in charge of keeping me alive during storm season. We were outside in south west Oklahoma City entertaining with friends when I saw those dark clouds and excused myself to go inside and check the weather. We all watched it start to form and move through on Channel 9 watching you chase it Val and Gary in the studio. All of us calling our parents frantically to tell them what was going on and making sure they were safe before going to the storm cellar ourselves, Oh how the tables turn when you "grow up" LOL. I am now 34 years old and still watch you chase Val. Thank you so much for what you do in the field, you keep so many people safe. And you get some stunning images of one of natures most beautiful and awe inspiring events.

@ValCastor

In the heat of the moment and with emotions high, it is easy to make mistakes on what to "call it"...our main goal is to warn people about impending danger. In this case we were live on the air with wall to wall coverage for several hours so unfortunately there were times when we made mistakes I'm sure. This tornado killed a lot of people so calling it a wedge on air wasn't irresponsible because at times it clearly was and people needed to know that.

Yeah that's unreal how the tornado is almost as wide as the entire super cell, and combined with the cells rear edge being nearly vertical it looks just like the entire mesacyclone is the tornado itself, one 10 mile tall 1 mile wide scary ass monster. A sight that's just completely otherworldly, they say a tornado is like the finger of God, well in this shot especially it looks more like the arm and fist of God just punching straight down hitting Earth square in its jaw with a knock out punch

We checked into a motel 6 in that area, and watched as the sky went from beautiful sunshine to pitch black in what seemed a matter of minutes. The next morning we headed out towards Tulsa, and never in my life have I seen so much damage. I remember an outlet mall along the way (Stroud?), and there was very little of it left standing. very happy and grateful for this footage to be uploaded! i was born after the '99 tornado outbreak occurred, so to be able to experience this event that happened before my time is fascinating. a lot of the images and video people have of these twisters are degraded through satellite to VHS transfer, and also because forecast stations of the era didn't have internet transfer, so they had to rely on digital radio image transfer methods or similar, meaning the framerate is usually awful. this case is different because it's a direct digitization or upload of the original source footage from a primary source. i'm hoping that proper backups are made of this, since youtube compresses video footage like this quite badly, meaning that it's not ideal for preservation, but it is certainly convenient.

I lived in far North Norman during the May 3 1999 and May 20th 2013 tornadoes (almost drove into the May 19th Norman tornado as it came into the West side of town). I now live in Dixie Alley. No helicopters and no spotters due to topography. It's alot like growing up in Oklahoma in the 1970's - living off radar and "flying blind". I SO MISS the coverage and reliability of Gary, Val, Amy et al!!

Gary England is the former Chief Meteorologist for KWTV out of oklahoma city. A brilliant mind and a legend in meteorology in the plains. And the reason that val keeps calling Garys name is a number of different things, could have lost the phone signal or could be because Gary has to keep an eye on 10 computer screens and about 4 different tv screens to keep track of everything going on. Especially this day when there were multiple tornadoes in different areas. But val still had to try and keep garys attention at times cause this was the main tornado cause it was so close to the city.

Val, you and Amy are 2 of the best Tornado chasers I have ever seen videos from. My name is Gary and hearing my name in your videos (even though you're not talking about me) always makes me wonder if Amy ever threatens to leave you for saying his name more than you say hers, just kidding 😂😁

In Oklahoma the storm chasers and meteriorlogists are like super heroes lol The amount of respect I had for Gary England and Mike Moore across my life is intense and I have the same respect for you guys. I was 8 years old when this happened and it’s a date I’ll never ever forget. Cleaning up afterward was intense.

In all my years watching tornado events live or here on RU-vid video I have NEVER seen a storm structure like this! The whole back end of the storm is the mesocyclone and it shoots straight into air like a 6 mile wide 7 mile tall cylinder! Still takes my breath every time I watch these videos shot by Val and Amy. I've never seen anything like it and I hope we never see anything like it again.
