I went through a phase of buying McDonalds Apple Pies and Dunking them in Hot Choc fudge sundaes. Now I try to make what I call 'Fakeaway" at home, less fat and sugar and more of the ingredients that count. This Cheekyricho Cooking original is not the same as a McDonalds Apple Pie its much better . We do hope you give it a try.
INGREDIENTS:
1 Granny Smith Apple
1 Pink Lady Apple
1t potato starch
1T icing sugar
1/2t cinnamon
1 sheet puff pastry. Makes 4
Food is fun, we hope you enjoy our journey.

In Australia, we don’t have the Lattice topped Hot Apple Pies from McDonalds, they are still in the original shape, which prefer. The filling gets very dry and almost like a plastic skin on it in the lattice holes. There is no way I could make them successfully in the Sausage roll maker. These are just perfect, brimming with delicious apples in a light delicate clear sauce. Thanks for watching and your lovely comment. Hope you have a nice relaxing weekend too Lucy.;-))

Absolutely, so many recipes so little time. I’m right in the middle of catering for a 6 year olds party at the moment, making a Dora the Explorer cake. Once I’m finished with that , I’ll be back with oodles more Sausage Roll maker ideas after this weekend. In the meantime most of my pie maker recipes will also work in the sausage roll maker. Hello , from the UK. After watching your videos on the sausage roll maker I knew I had to have one. I managed to get one from Aldi in the UK but I also managed to get The Australian Women’s Weekly called The sausage roll maker . It took a while to arrive but oh boy has it got some amazing sweet and savoury recipes in. Must have about a hundred and worth every penny.

Got to point out, that unless the puff pastry is a gluten free version, than these apple pies won't be gluten free. But apparently, happily, one can now get gluten free puff pastry...Fantastic recipe, and thanks for the video and taking the time to show the method.

Thank you very much for the great feedback. I regularly make these as a volunteer for fellow flood victims and it’s always a huge hit. As a matter of fact I never eaten or seen one get cold yet, I think that says something for the popularity of the recipe. I must have omitted to state the pastry was a frozen gluten free variety. My mistake, thank you very much for clarifying it for my audience. I guess I was a bit eager to share it. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.;-))

Thank you very much Julie, some apples are more juicy than others and may need a little more thickening. If they were to get cold you will find the sauce will thicken on standing. I like the texture and clear sauce the potato starch imparts. I use it in all my Asian meals which require the sauce to be thickened, in Asian style batters, in baking and both sweet or savoury dishes. It’s also gluten free so it’s good in custards and sweets. Hope that helps and thank you for your great feedback and for watching.;-))

@CheekysKitchen

Yes they certainly do. Pink Lady apples keep their shape better and stay a little firm, that’s why I like to use a mixture of Granny Smiths, for tartness and a pink ladies for texture, you could of course use any apples available but I think this mixture of varieties produces the best result. I think I’ll try corn starch as I’ve just read this about potato starch “While potatoes are high in easily digestible starch that can lead to blood sugar spikes, they are also high in resistant starch - a type of fiber that is “resistant” to digestion by human enzymes”. Yes I know it’s a tiny little bit you are using but another factor is I have corn starch in the cupboard but no potato starch.
@CheekysKitchen
@CheekysKitchen 3 года назад
Wow, that’s very interesting to know, I had no idea. I use it for so many things, I like the way the sauce is glossy and clear it’s flavourless, thickens very easily and reheats well. Cornstarch will usually go runny when reheated. Sometimes after I squeeze the juice out of grated potato Latkes or hash browns I keep the potato water, let it settle and then pour off the clear water, the sludge left in the bottom makes a good thickener, I assumed that’s how they made potato flour. Potato starch is more expensive, less easily obtained and impossible to buy during lock down. I even have sweet potato flour here but I haven’t used it yet. I have a tendency to buy things in Asian grocery stores and then try and find a way to use it. I’ve stumbled onto some amazing ingredients that way but I’ve also bought some shockers too. 🤗🙄

Hello Mrs Cheekyricho! I've been watching your videos and I'm hooked. Thank you for all the great ideas for using the pie maker and sausage maker and all the rest of the recipes you have on your channel. If I may ask you please, as I see that you have the Sunbeam deep pie maker and also the Kmart 4 pie maker, does it make much difference that the Kmart one is not as deep? Also, would you say the sausage maker is as versatile as the pie maker? I quite like the sausage maker because it seems to hold a lot more filling but the pie maker seems to lend itself to an array of recipes....very grateful for your opinion and thank you again, you make me want to get in the kitchen and start cooking! ⭐️💐😊Stay healthy, best, Roisin
@CheekysKitchen
@CheekysKitchen 2 года назад
What delightful and polite feedback Roisin, you have really made my day. Thank you so much. I have a 30 plus year old Sunbeam Pie Magic 4, still working fine but the coating has started to fail. Still works but sticks in places. I have actually used it to death, treated it well but the coating obviously has a use by date of around 3 decades. I found the same thing happened to my first sunbeam waffle maker. It had much less use and the non stick coating failed miserably around the same age. The appliance was still working but getting a stuck waffle out of a hot waffle maker took more patience than I had to spare.😡 The sunbeam cost almost $100 at the time which was a great deal Of money, 30 years ago. The base of the pies are smaller in diameter and possibly a little deeper because the lid is domed but I don’t think the capacity is similar. It is too soon to tell how long the Kmart piemaker will last as it’s unlikely I will live another 30 years to compare. I do love the sausage roll maker. No need to cut lids and bases, you can actually fold pastry without cutting. Quicker to load, no rerolling, no waste. Makes great twinky style cakes, choc eclairs, apple pies that are easier to eat, sausage rolls, Spring Rolls or even Chiko Rolls. If you have room to store both appliances and can afford to buy both you can find use for both. You can use either to use up leftovers, saving waste, filling lunch boxes. The pie maker has a flat bottom in the base which lends itself to layered foods like frittata, lasagnas, cheesecakes and vege stacks. You can also use patty papers in them. The sausage roll maker has a round bottom which is perfect for ‘rolled’ foods, spring rolls, wraps, omelettes are a perfect shape to fill a hot dog shaped roll or filling wraps with salad or relish. The greatest compliment you can pay any creator is to say their content has inspired you to use their ideas and you are encouraged to implement the information shared in your own kitchen and for that I am truly grateful. I hope this has answered your questions and don’t forget we are always here to help you on your own food journey. We do the experimenting so you don’t have to. Thank you so much for your thorough response and more ideas on how to use the appliances Mrs CheekyRicho (I still haven’t managed to find out your name but I love watching your videos and I’m doing so whenever I find a spare moment in RU-vid, so maybe in one of those your name will be revealed 😉). Wow, 30 years, it has had a good innings, so it’s probably deserving of a good retiring or maybe, occasional use, it’s served you well. I think it's true when people say things don’t get made as they used to, but back then appliances were that more expensive because more solid/better quality materials were used so that was in a way, justified. Maybe the coating in the waffle maker degraded, as it didn’t have that much use. Something similar happened to me with a sandwich maker, no fun to remove stuck on food from hot plates! I read somewhere that you should put a thin coat of oil on the non stick coating of the appliances that have seldom use, not sure how effective but I don’t think it could hurt. I haven’t a waffle maker although it does wink at me every now and then when I look at other appliances online. Well, I think I ’have’ to treat myself to both appliances then, I’ll make some room for them in the kitchen cupboard. No, THANK YOU for all the ideas and the easy-going but detailed manner you have to explain and show the recipes, everything seems so simple 😁 You can be assured that I always appreciate all the effort you put in in making the videos, and I look forward to continue going through your library of delicious recipes. Did you just use regular flaky pastry or a sweet pastry, they sure look like the real deal. Cheers Diana NZ
@CheekysKitchen
@CheekysKitchen 3 года назад
Hey there Kiwi Diana, I used regular store bought frozen sheets of puff pastry. It works a great, looks the same and the pastry is not as thick, it also stays puffed snd pillowy not sad and flat. The filling tastes as close to the real deal as I can make it except of course there is a lot more fruit that sauce filler (we cook for taste, not for profit) I’m sure if you give it a try you will be equally impressed. Your could use shortcrust pastry and it will work but it is more fiddly to work with and doesn’t seem to stay as crisp, which is my preference, even cold these tend to retain the crisp out shell, although that doesn’t happen often, a cold pie pfftt! Lol Thanks for the great feedback snd for watching. Cheers from across the ditch. 🇳🇿 🇦🇺

Made these today, the fam liked em but was too much cinnamon for me.. Will try again with less.. Pastry didn't seem right, how do they go with shortcrust?
@CheekysKitchen
@CheekysKitchen 3 года назад
Thank you for your feedback, we are big cinnamon fans and this seems to be pretty close to the cinnamon taste in the Maccas Apple Pie. You could try shortcrust but it is not as robust as puff, meaning it will not hold together as well, be more flaky or ‘short’ (hence the name ) it crumble more easily and be harder to remove from the sausage roll maker without breaking. Different brands of Puff pastry perform differently from each other. I personally don’t like the Aldi brand, it has a different taste and doesn’t behave as well as Pampas, Borgs or even Woolworths Home Brand, can’t compare it to Coles Home brand as I haven’t been able to buy it there, all year. This is just my personal preference, you may have better or different results to me. I hope that helps and thank you for your feedback and for watching.;-))

@CheekysKitchen
@CheekysKitchen 3 года назад
Thank you for your lovely feedback Bev, I understand the problem, I had to source some from an Asian Specialty store in Southport Qld. You can use cornflour or cornstarch or arrowroot. Substitute equal for equal quantities. The reason I like potato starch is because it makes a nice clear glossy sauce, it’s tasteless, gluten free (not important in this recipe unless you use gluten free pastry). Arrowroot can get a bit ‘gloopy’, think wallpaper paste lol. Cornflour is an adequate substitute but if you reheat it, there is a possibility the sauce will return to a more liquid state. My personal opinion is potato starch is an ideal thickening medium for everything from Asian sauces to desserts. The alternatives I have suggested will work. If and when potato flour is available again, you might find it a really worthwhile product to have on hand. I really appreciate your comments, thank you very much for watching. I hope that information helps.;-))

@CheekysKitchen 3 года назад
Thank you Philip, I had a bit of trouble buying it recently too, I thought it might have something to do with supply shortages due to COVID, I hope not I use it for so many things. Ground rice or rice flour is wonderful for making things like Mochi or shortbread. It’s a bit gritty. Arrowroot is readily available, makes a clear sauce but can be a bit gloopy. Cornflour will work but it will make the sauce a bit cloudy, still gluten free, tastes the same, just not quite as clear and glossy. Thanks for watching and your lovely feedback, I hope to bring you lots more interesting recipes.;-))

@CheekysKitchen
@CheekysKitchen 2 года назад
Thanks for your question, no you can use cornflour or arrowroot to thicken your filling. The reason I use potato flour is it is clear when thickened, is Gluten free, reheats beautifully without going runny, does not have any taste, mixes in readily and never clumps. When using cornflour, often when reheating it returns to a more liquid state and is less stable. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.;-))

Where do you find potato starch

The international or gluten free aisle of many supermarkets, Asian specialty supermarkets and health food shops generally stock it. You can substitute cornflour if you get stuck but the sauce will be cloudy and not clear. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.;-))

I used to get it from Coles, woollies or Asian supermarkets. There has been a lack of supply since COVID and I’m having trouble finding it now. Hope it’s back on the shelves soon, my cupboard stock is running low.

When you say "look at that sauce in there", all i can see is the ads on the screen. :(. I had this idea and my girlfriend said "You can''t do that!" So I said "I'm googling it!"

Thank you very much for your very helpful feedback. I’m sorry your viewing experience was marred by the exhibition of ads at such a crucial point. I do hope you get the chance to make this recipe, it is excellent, easy and probably one of the best recipes to highlight the versatility of this humble little budget friendly appliance. You can expect to see a lot more interesting recipe ideas, from us using it to inspire you to make some crazy fun feeds, in the Sausage Roll Maker, Family Pie Maker, individual pie maker and the latest addition to our arsenal, the churro maker. I know , how many recipes can I invent for that one? I may even make Churros lol. Thanks for watching.;-))

Yep made these they were delicious, but the pastry was soft and soggy within a couple of hours 😔 why???

Thank you for your question michpet72, to be honest Ive never eaten them cold, they normally don't last that long here, we enjoy them with custard, cream or ice cream. You could crisp up the pastry by popping them back into the sausage roll maker for a couple of minutes to reheat them, this will evaporate the moisture that may have accumulated during storage. Maybe storing them on a wire rack to completely cool and not placing warm pastries in an airtight container will prolong the crispness you enjoy when they a freshly made. Hope that helps, thanks for watching and your very interesting question.;-))

Yes sorry about the late reply, somehow my notifications have been disabled and with almost 2,000 videos uploaded on both my channels some comments slip through unnoticed. Apart from that we almost lost our house in the floods last year do the priority has been making it safe and liveable again, I lost so much kitchen, lighting and camera equipment it’s been a bit of a juggle just getting things back to a bit more normal. I miss my uploads, I am still cooking though, I cook regular meals for the other flood victims who lost even more than me. Some are still Living in tents and caravans in the yards of their gutted homes. Your fun comment was a bright spot in a very dismal patch we are all enduring at present. As they say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, I have some stern words for the author that that proverb lol. Thanks for watching.;-))
