Prepping Mojo's food from start to finish! Deer, kangaroo, hare, pheasant, rabbit liver, beef kidney. Will be doing this more often! Find us here: instagram mojoandfriends facebook / staffymojo e-mail marijke_dick@hotmail.com
John Vu Thanks! Yes it's quite a lot. On average a raw fed dog eats 2-3 percent of their bodyweight on a daily basis. Some dogs have a relatively high or low metabolic rate, Mojo in this case eats 3.3%. Over 5 weeks this sums up to 17.5 kgs!
Love the end of the video, your dog seems to really enjoy the raw diet. My dogs are on day three of the transition, slowly introducing them to a balanced diet! Can't wait to get them on some raw meaty bones!
Thank you! Yes, she does enjoy her food indeed. Today it's prep day again, actually. I might film it again! Great to hear, I hope the transition goes smoothly!
This was super helpful. Great presentation & highly organized. I saw some unnecessary comments abt being too technical but ur method is very methodical which made sense. Most raw feeders stick to the 80, 10, 10 feeding guides. I haven’t started raw yet but will very soon. Thx.
My dog is a 20-pound(9.09kg) Boston Terrier. I currently feed a US BARF diet base mix from Dr. Harvey’s along with my own protein and oil, and want to add some DIY meals to the mix, and considered PMR meals because I don’t want to fuss over balancing and supplements, and this model seems to not obsess over it as much as BARF feeders. You inspired me to give it a go.
have a look at perfectly rawsome for formulated menus! they can help you guarantee nutritionally balanced meals. i have a discount code too (SportingStaffords it is I believe)
Haha you're so precise compared to me! I'm pretty "That'll do", if it is 22g and I need 25g I just figure it'll balance out over the week, some meals might have 30g of liver while others only have 20g, but if there is the proper amount over the week I just go with it. Haha :) I need to start kidney again, we can't really get raw bulk to our area so I have to buy it from the supermarket where they only have Lamb Kidney which always stinks a bit. And it's a lot more expensive than the chicken livers that we usually just use as the 10% of secreting organ... I need to start doing some better prep again, I got super busy and no-one else in the family will do it (properly). :-(
Just curious, how much does it cost for you to get Kangaroo? It's reasonably expensive in Australia (where obviously the kangaroos come from.) so does it cost a lot for you?
It's perfectly okay to use 10% liver, a friend of mine recently calculated it :) But yeah, it's better to use more variety! Haha, this was the first DIY prep I did. I have done a few now and they al vary from 22 to 28 grams lol! Kangaroo was €6 per kilogram, not expensive at all! Rabbit is €5,60 and deer/llama are €5 :)
Loving your accent! I get my raw food from naturaw! They are brilliant! Thought you were German at first but then heard your accent when you said "Lecker" to Mojo. I'm German by the way.
I'm new to raw food, got your video from the Facebook page! this helped me so much and your dog is absolutely positively adorable! can I ask what supplier you use? And how much you spend? If those are ok questions, like I said I'm New! great video!!
I'm new too. Guess it depends where u live... I live in the US and found the following highly recommended raw dog food online suppliers so ck them out: Hare today, Raw Paw, Raw feeding Miami, My pet Carnivore & k-9 Kraving. Thankfully I found a local supplier which will safe me in shipping. Hope this helped.
Continue this diet. My dogs have been on the RAW/BARF diet for two and half years and they are healthier than ever. Kibble is nothing but poison with trace amounts of nutrition. This is the EVOLUTIONARILY CORRECT diet for dogs. Good job switching them to this diet. Keep it up! Wish you and your dogs a prosperous and healthy future. P.S - I also occasionally add lamb/ goat kidneys along with liver. Best, Chinmay
Glad you're happy with the diet as well! I've been feeding both dogs a raw diet from the day they joined our family. Home prepping was the first time for me when I made this video, in the past, we used to buy boxes of premade raw. I much prefer to prep it myself! Do you prep or feed premade, what do you prefer? I also switch between types of liver, kidney, testicles, etc to get as much variation as possible
I prep the food myself as well. I buy the meat directly from a butcher. But, being in India means that the types of meat are limited to only a certain variety. For example, I can't buy beef because cows are sacred in India. Even though I want to feed my dogs beef. I like beef as well. I'm not religious at all. I buy as much red meat as possible. Dogs and wolves prefer red meat over white meat, always. It's far more dense in fats, nutrients (vitamins and minerals) and it has more blood; which they absolutely love! Also, on a side note, I have my dogs fast for two days before their eating day. This mimics how they would live in nature. Fasting promotes GH (growth hormone) and testosterone levels; it increases insulin sensitivity; it is the best way to detox the body as well as improve cognitive functions and it helps my dogs sleep better too. My approach to taking care of my dogs is to mimic nature as much as humanly possible.
I prefer red meats also, and usually go with wild shot. So we'd have rabbit, duck, hare, you name it. Sometimes a bit of chicken, but other than that we've got red. Plenty of fat as well, at least one fatty meat that makes up a good chunk of the diet. I would love to fast too, as it would resemble their feast and famine lifestyle that their entire digestive system (their stomach in particular) are designed for. Like I mentioned in a different reply, I exercise my dogs often and we have at least one high intensity session every day. I can't let them gorge because of that, but I do stretch it to once a day rather than twice like many people do. Additionally, since my dogs are small, they already suffer from hunger pukes sometimes when they eat once a day. They don't do well waiting any longer. Larger dogs (size that resembles wild carnivores) are much more capable of handling this. My dogs are also very wide-chested in comparison to many other breeds of dog, so bloat is always on my mind.
She is fed once a day :) Sometimes I take out a piece of her dinner for her to have at some point during the day, and most days she gets a dehydrated rabbit ear with fur. The fur helps her digestive system, similar to fibres do for us humans.
What meat delivery service you use? I am going crazy with my Husky 9months old been picky about food and not eating up to 3 days at worst. I watched few videos of the raw diet and I really think is great for them. please help.. thank you
We live in the Netherlands so we use a website that delivers to our door. There are many amazing companies like this in other countries. Where do you live?
I think that's a lot of work. Just divide the food by appearance and it will eventually get the same vitamins and minerals when it finishes the carton of raw food that has arrived
Hey, you explain that very well. Oskar, is 20kg heavy, how much meat do I have to give him exactly? Can you help me, maybe? How much gram he exactly from the meat, offal, fruit / vegetables, oils, fat he needs exactly? That would be so nice of you. I love Dutch accents very much.
Hi Sada! Of course I would. Could you send us an email? I can explain it in detail there and send it over in an Excel file :) contact@mojoandfriends.blog
Streylight Not everything! Cooked bones remain unsafe to feed and when feeding raw soft bone it's always important to observe your dog's eating habits! :)
paul Walker From a Dutch website called DogMeat. If you're in the UK look for Naturaw, they offer even more than what I can get. I you're in the US go to Hare Today, Raw Feeding Miami, or Big Country Raw.
Hello!!! I am sooo bad at math and wondered if you could help with my 3 dogs one is 8 lbs one is 42 lbs and another 65 lbs and quite old. I have been feeding them pmr for years and portion their food daily...really like your organized way of feeding and am adopting it. However I think I'm feeding my poochies a bit too much so can you help me convert??? Just want to help the smallest and mid dogs loose a little weight.
Hi Breanna, sure! If you plan on feeding partial raw, would you feed one kibble and one raw meal a day? Some dogs can’t handle this, but for others it is totally fine. But getting back to the original question, a dog of his weight would eat an approximate amount of 60-80 grams of raw a day, so you can stick to 30-40 grams. This is 1-1.3 oz :) Then along with that, you can feed him half of the required amount of kibble.
I prefer using the metric system for raw diets, as that is way more precise. A 17lb dog would weigh 7.7kg. An average dog eats anywhere from 2-3 % of its bodyweight in raw on a daily basis, on average (some dogs eat much more than that). If we go with the average 2.5%, your dog would need 192.5 grams of food per day. Depending on your dog's metabolic rate and body condition, you might need to feed slightly more or less than this amount :) 192.5 grams calculates back to 6.8 ounces.
You are owner of dog I glad you Cut meat for your dog so easy for Them to chew the meat well Don't give them frozen food because it's hard for them bite Those meat is frozen Thanks watching your videos taking care your dog well Don't give the meat whole cut Meat before you give dog Don't give them bones is heavy
I only cut up meat that comes in chunks that are too large to fit in the food container. We feed bone and organ daily, and some chunks of meat combined with bone and organ make for a meal that's too large. We feed soft flexible bone like poultry wings, they are necessary in a raw diet. Weight-bearing bones are indeed a no-go.
Do you balance each day? I've got a 88lb male euro Doberman and a 50lb female Siberian Husky and I balance over a week, I'm thinking of changing to daily balancing. Does it take longer to prep this way? Love your staffies coat so shiny and Mojo is a beauty.
Yes, currently I do. Mojo is quite sensitive so it wouldn't be great to feed organ once weekly with heavy bone content that day, for example. It works just fine for me. I spend 4-5 hrs of prepping once every 5 weeks, which isn't too much for me tbh :) But I do buy to balance over 5 weeks and the bone content varies per day. Some days it's 8%, some days it's 12%. It just depends on the weight of the duck wing or duck neck she gets that day.
That makes sense, i supposed i'll leave it i do it now. My dogs aren't sensitive, but I wouldn't want to upset their system by suddenly feeding organ each day, since it can be rich and cause diarrhoea
You should feed a small amount of cooked vegetables (50gr), sweet potato, broccoli, spinach, peas, carrot, etc. Your dog can also benefit from some fish once or twice a week, a couple of raw eggs, including the shell, flaxseed oil esp. if not feeding fish, and raw organic coconut oil, about a teaspoon a day, give it as a training treat, they love it, great for their coats.
Hello Toby. I do not feed plant material to dogs. For one, dogs do not need plant material. Second, my dog is prone to yeast issues (as do many other bull breeds), and feeding plant material adds a high amount of sugar, that will in turn feed the yeast. I do feed a small amount of oily fish, which is only necessary if a dog's diet mainly consists of farmed animals, which Mojo's doesn't. Wildshot meat and grassfed animals have a higher amount of Omega 3 fatty acids, so oily fish is less important if that is the main part of the diet. Coconut oil does not replace oily fish as it doesn't have omega 3 fatty acids. Mojo does eat raw eggs with shell, and I also have an eggshell powder I add a small amount of every once in a while. I do not add flaxseed oil because it's made of plant material dogs can't properly take up omega 3 fatty acids from plant material. Instead of feeding fish, I would suggest feeding krill oil.
I feed a prey model raw diet, not BARF. Vegetables and fruits are an optional part in a dog's diet given a dog can handle it. The prey model raw diet does not include vegetables.
@@sportingwithstaffords you don't agree that small 5% of vegetable is good in the raw diet? In the wild the wolves eat the contents of the herbivore's stomach along with it. I've been feeding my dogs flax seed oil for over a year in their raw diet as well as cod liver oil. I can't say which is making their coats shiny if not both in tandem. You've piqued my interest in saying dogs can't take up plant material. Ok new subscriber and I can see that this is old. Do you still share same sentiments on plant material concerning dogs?
Ello! I was wondering if you could help me do some math, as I am horrible in it and it seems nobody can help! I have a GSD who I would like to feed raw. He weighs 105 lbs, and I was wondering if anyone could help.
Tibii Wolfie Sure! I'll calculate it to kgs and back to lbs afterwards, if you don't mind! Your dog weighs 105lbs = 47.5kg On average, a dog eats 2-3% of its bodyweight daily. For your dog: 2% equals 950 grams = 2lbs 0,3oz 3% equals 1425 grams = 3lbs 4,5 oz On average, it'll be intermediate: 2,5% equals 1187.5 grams = 2.5lbs 3.5 oz Going from 1187.5 grams daily, I'll round up to 1200 grams for ease. 80% meat equals 0.8*1200=960 grams (part of which comes from bone in meat such as wings) 10% bone equals 0.1*1200=120 grams which (which comes from bone in meat) 5% liver equals 60 grams 5% kidney or other offal equals 60 grams Need any other help? :)
Fat is a great source of energy, and is very beneficial for dogs to consume (unless heated). Especially dogs that exercise a lot benefit from a diet with quite some fat. Some meats I feed are lean (hare, deer) and some are rich in fat (kangaroo, pork, beef).
Good for you, lots of effort; but I just throw my dog a chicken carcass morning and evening, give him an egg now and again, few berries maybe, broccoli two-three times a week. He's been great on that for years.
Dwywaith dair That's an extremely nutrient deficient diet. You do you, but just be aware that this will harm a dog in the long run eventhough you won't notice it.
Dwywaith dair Like I said, you won't notice everything. Nutrient deficiency doesn't even show up on bloodwork. The diet you listed lacks in many vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. There's no red meat, no organs. Too much calcium, too little phosphorus, no vitamin A, and I could go on. Although your dog might die from 'old age' it could suffer from the deficiencies. I'd recommend joining The Raw Feeding Community on facebook and sharing what you feed. I'd gladly help you feed your dog a balanced diet, just let me know.
mojoandfriends Thank you. Really appreciate. Your video, as I said, is excellent. But there is no research, no published study, on raw feeding. I can't find a cited source for the 80% meat, 10% bone recommendation, for example. I'd love one. And many raw feeders on RU-vid and elsewhere seem to suggest chicken carcasses are perfectly fine, adding nothing. Dogs are adaptive, of course. They are omnivore and are able to eat what's available. That's one reason why they're successful. Strays, throughout the world, devour what they can, mostly from human debris and detritus. The longest living dog was Bluey, an Aussie mutt, who was fed scraps of kangaroo meat and bone. He lived to 26. But your dog looks great and good for you for the way you feed. 👍
Although many people might share certain information (and yes, I have seen that shared before), it doesn't always mean that it's true. Indeed, to most people watching, I'm also just someone sharing a RU-vid video. But to explain it more indepth, I'd like to list that I graduated as an MSc in Animal Adaptation and Behavioural Biology. The final two years of my studies were fully focused on behaviour and nutrition of dogs. In a project I focused on canine nutrition for a few months, and I was familiarized with the minimal nutritional requirements for dogs to survive. Although there is a clear lack in scientific research on raw feeding, there is ample research on minimum requirements in the canine diet. Knowing these minima and knowing the nutritional analysis of the components that I feed my dog, I know for a fact that I exceed these minima. As far as your dog's diet goes, it's a lengthy explanation, so I will focus on calcium and phosphorus. For kibble, the law is that the calcium:phosphorus balance has to ideally be 1:1 or at max 1:2 or the other way around. A diet that consists of roughly 50% red meat and 10% bone equals to a 1:1 balance of calcium and phosphorus over time. You are currently feeding approximately 40% bone and no red meat. The balance (without calculating) is around 1:4. This incorrect balance can have disastrous consequences for the dog's skeleton. Just because a species is adaptive and CAN survive on a certain type of food (dogs can even survive on a herbivorous diet if they have to), doesn't mean they SHOULD or that it is healthy for them. I hope this helps :)
SuperSayainJesus Ah, sorry. Mojo gets a dehydrated rabbit ear with fur every other day. I did mention it in one of our meal prep vlogs, but it might have been a different one :)
@@sportingwithstaffords Some people just aren't animal people. Our bird is quite lovely, chirping and singing and just primping and sitting most of the time. The only time it's a bit annoying is in the morning or evenings when it occasionally gets overly excited and wants attention. Lovely fur & feather pals you have there, the both of them. They're lucky to have you.
Goe N. Phucyersaylf it's very important to ensure a proper balance. However you do it, you must meet minimal requirements. The way I calculate it now is much easier, but still according to the same percentages.
Dogs are TRUE omnivores. They should also be eating veggies, grains and fruit in addition to meat. What you feed is closer to what a cat should be getting. www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/are-dogs-carnivores-heres-what-new-research-says The article is wrong about people though. People are actually frugivores that eat like omnivores which explains why we are so sickly. We should be eating mostly fruit like primates. After all , we have hands like they do to pick fruit off trees and bushes.
