13 Reasons Why season 4 is the finale of the powerful yet controversial teen drama. The series is based on the novel 13 reasons why by Jay Asher. But the show differs much from the book. Hannah Baker's life had a different ending, and the timeline was expanded with stories of Clay Jensen and other characters.
While the creators of 13 Reasons Why wanted their show to help struggling teenagers, they were widely criticized for brutally honest manner and painful scenes. That's why two years after the show premiered, Netflix removed the most traumatizing moment from season 1.
13 Reasons Why soundtrack choice was not random. Dylan Minnette helped to pick songs that reflect the vibe of the story. The soundtrack includes the tracks by Joy Division and New Order, and these bands had their own similar tragic story. Selena Gomez, who is one of the executive producers of the show, wanted to portray Hannah Baker, but eventually her input was made through her music featuring in the series.
13 Reasons Why season 3 has some striking parallels with another Netflix teen drama - Elite. Both shows explore the murder of the high school student through two simultaneous timelines.
To help 13 Reasons Why cast handle their roles, the show creators brought support on the set. Therapy dogs were working alongside mental health consultants to keep the actors in the positive mindset between the takes.
One of the important visual details was tattoos of the underage characters that reflect their challenging personal stories. But the ink was used by the cast off-set, too. The actors marked 13 Reasons Why season 1 finale with identical semicolon tattoos - symbol of people who battle depression.

In my opinion it was an important scene. It showed the reality of a suicidal person and to what extent depression can make them do things no matter how much they will suffer while doing it. The show portrayed that without sugar coating it. They didn't tried to make it look less gruesome and painful which most other shows do.. For me that is "glorifying" suicide not this. Scenes dealing with suicide, bullying, assualt, rape should make audience uncomfortable!! I know there are some people suffering from mental issues which can get triggered by some scenes shown on this show. I personally think they should not watch the show or watch it after somebody they know has watched it so that the person can tell them which episodes they should skip. I think scenes like this make the people realise that such acts are not for TV/Netflix!! These things happen in real life to real people!! P.s Sorry for the rant but it's true

Suicide bothers people, but all the rape scenes were ok? Or were those removed too? Some of those were way worse to watch than the suicide scene. 🤷‍♀️ Yes, that scene was hard, but there was a huge story behind it. That's why they have the warnings before you watch. 🤦‍♀️

@@adonaitdaniel1282 sorry for the year long delay in responding. Sometimes I don't see responses...I 100% agree that suicide should not happen, but neither should rape. The broom stick scene was way harder to watch than the suicide scene. Neither should happen, but they do and if they allow the rape scenes, they need to keep the suicide scenes because that was part of the story line. The warnings were there, so we knew what was coming and we continued to watch. People getting upset over certain topics really have no right to complain because they were warned. ALL of those scenes were tragic and triggering, but ALL were part of the story. They should not pick and choose what is worse to watch, it's all or nothing if they want it that way, but oh yeah, that takes away from part of the story. 🤷‍♀️

They removed the suicide scene which yeah I get it it is so sad but it is the truth believe it or not theres people everyday dying like this. And the show gets so much hate just because it is raw. I personally love 13RW it made me learn so many things and it changed me but in a better way. Just because one person hates it doesn't mean that everyone hates it!

It was a big mistake to delete the suicide scene. It was as powerful even because it was like it was. In which world it romantise suicide? 13rw is known and loved for the honestly and brutal reality. Hannahs scene do happen exactly like this in real life too for some ppl. Its a fact and not romantic in any way. Deleting this scene was like cutting out part of 13rw soul. I tried suicide myself but this scene didn't trigger me, bc i accepted it as given, needed, reality. What use its to make such a series but starting censoring or lying? Some ppl here wrote, that some other scenes was more hard to watch, as for example the rape scenes. I completely can sign this. They was way harder, but they are still in, and its good so. I am glad I have still the original episode with this scene in.

Great show. I convinced my daughter to watch it. She's just out of school and works with training dogs for special needs people. I have to admit that my concerns about her peace of mind and bouts with depression worried me greatly. 13 RW was quite possibly a lifesaver for her. It started conversations and gave us a sounding board to bounce ideas off of. In a time when it seems like the world is out to kill us... we must protect each other. Peace,

a girl killed herself the way hannah did after watching the show and the mother really blamed the show,even though every episode they tell you watch with a friend or a trusted adult😐 and to NOT watch alone if you are struggling.(rip to her tho💕)

Favorite character is either Tony or Montgomery they drove the plot pretty well and displayed different aspects of teen struggle; even though Tony looked way older lol. Least favorite character by far is Alex he contradicts himself way too much in season 3.

I don't think so, because 13rw S1 came out 2017,s2 2018 and s3 2019(they talked abt s3 in this video), Elite came out in 2018 but they already started filming at the end of 2017(I'm not very sure abt that but one actress posted on January 2018 that she turned 18 and the whole elite cast was next to her so ig they started filming the 1st season in 2017), but I still don't think 13rw stole/inspired smt from Elite, they are both good series in their own way and yeah lol

As a psychologist, I understand the producers' struggles around how to depict suicide in order not to romanticize it and risk to indirectly encourage it rather than discourage. In my opinion it was a good idea to change the way Hannah dies, from drug overdose to a more crude method, that took a lot of romanticization away indeed, but as for removing the most graphic scenes, I don't think that helped. Those deleted scenes could definitely strike or even traumatize viewers, but this has not much to do with encouraging or discouraging that action. If you want to end your life, not knowing exactly how to do it won't be enough to stop you from finding a way to do it. It would be hypocrisy to believe this. Encouraging people to seek help, the whole semicolon symbolism and the entire message of the series, that's what teenagers need in my opinion. Is the original suicide scene too crude for teenager viewers? Probably, and so are all the rape scenes... but I believe 13RW is a show for parents and teachers rather than for teens. Politically correct-ness has never saved a life. I am not from USA, and probably culture makes a difference, probably in Italy our collective subconscious is so full of graphic depictions of tortured saints on ancient frescoes, that blood, death and pain on screen has a different effect on us... but after all is said and done, they should probably have left the suicide scene uncensored and add a disclaimer encouraging teenagers to watch the show together with their parents, creating opportunities for emotional, open-hearted dialogue.

Tbh it makes me mad they took the suicide act out, tbh wouldn't it be better for people to see how it effects people right then and there, I also think it would have been better if Hanna had a older and younger brother/sister so that people with siblings could see what happens when they see them dead too. In my opinion it would lead people away from suicide just seeing what could happen to their family at the moment of them finding out what happened.

The suicide scene was especially emotional for me because I had tried to kill myself In the same exact manner and in the same place over 20 years ago. Gratefully I did not succeed.

I've always heard about the show but never tuned in so once I got Netflix I decided to watch it for the first time I've seen all three seasons I cannot wait for June 5 the final season I know it will be awesome I love the cast my favorites are clay Jensen Tony Padilla Hannah baker Jessica Justin I like Bryce I know he had a good heart despite what he had done I feel he was a good person and wanted to be better

I did exactly what Hannah did with 2 big differences. 1: it was YEARS ago and 2: I survived. There was nothing on tv at the time to play a part in my attempt. I’ve watched this show. It didn’t trigger me at all(but I see how it could). In fact, my thought was “had I seen this back in the day(Hannah’s face, parents finding her), maybe I would’ve asked for help sooner”

They absolutely should’ve removed the suicide scene. 13RW, showed KIDS one of the most LETHAL ways to KTS. I work in medicine, & when I 1st watched the scene, I was sick to my stomach. I instantly knew the outcome would not be good, & wouldn’t let my teenage daughter watch the series.

Is that even legal laughing my ass off how do they not know like in order to get a tattoo or piercing if you are not 18 or over the age of all you need is your parents consent that you take to a person that is a notary to notarize it it's very simple I mean if your parents or a guardian so you can like have anybody basically be okay with and approve of it sign the paper haven't notarized that's it simple as that there's nothing illegal about it

There's no dumber "peer pressure" producers faced than removal of Hannah's suicide "AS FILMED per script" 2 yrs post-production. Let's delete the entire series, wait, its the series in its original entirety (& ALL RAW REALITY) that creates its best, effective deterrent against suicide! If you remove the ugly reality of it, you open up curiosity & kids will explore slitting their wrists in real life, since the show was forced to remove those scenes. Are they blind how dangerous it is to remove the raw violence (intended to detur teen suicide in this manner. Why should anyone's voice ruin Hannah's suicide as 1st filmed!? This critical deterrent scene is for the rest of the world, to show them the pain & how bad it is! W/o this scene, suicide curiosity & attempts likely increase! Its why Drivers Ed classes show graphic deaths resulting from high speed collisions without seat belts! This show's edit is So wrong & more deaths will result because of it!

Elite is terrible and most of the reasons for their actions don't make much sense. How does Lu get away with what they hounded Polo for? Pretty not well thought of

Elite has a very weak storyline actually, it relies too much on visuals and their actors.

monty and bryce are my least favorite on that show their both the same in a way they act the same way and do the same things similarly

Monty is one of my favorites after season 3. Don't care what people say, he isn't a completely terrible person. Highly misunderstood. He doesn't know how to show his emotions properly.
