It was always assumed that the Batman of Earth 2 (the Golden Age Batman) Rogue's Gallery was identical to the modern Batman's. The only real difference being everyone on Earth 2 being at least 20 years older and Earth 2's Catwoman reformed, married Bruce Wayne and had an daughter with him. I do wonder what happened to the Golden Age Batman's other Rogues. Did they retire? Die in Jail? Or were they still trying to commit crimes as 80+ year old men (with an embarrassed Adult Robin having to subdue them!)? "It's time to go back to jail, Mr. Riddler." "Oh look, it's the Boy Wonder!" "I'm 50, Mr. Riddler." "...."

@@ViccVegaa023 Unfortunately, we don't know much about the original Golden Age Earth-Two at its later years. We know Bruce Wayne eventually dropped the cowl and there were new villains running around and one of them killed him in the end. But then the original Golden Age Earth was wiped out in the Crisis on Infinite Earths and the story did not continue.

I think because WW is 'ageless' her rogues passing the torch, and gaining legacy Villains makes sense as a way to highlight that agelessness... whereas Batman forever being between 25 & 40 (outside of Beyond or 'Dark Knight Returns' inspired jumps forward) requires a 'sliding scale'

Debbi got short shrift. She sadly only appeared in 2 stories during her tenure as Cheetah. I liked her design far more than the golden age Cheetah because her tail was not at all fluffy and her hair was gorgeous. I wish Debbi had gotten more time in the spotlight and I desperately hope she is brought back/retconned/flashedback/time-jumped or anything and becomes a formidable character.

I always found Deborah really tragic... if I remember correctly, by the time Kobra was defeated her mental trauma was irreversible, and she ended up being sent off to spend the rest of her life in Arkham Asylum. Although that DOES raise the question of how a Wonder Woman villain gets sentenced to a Gotham City psychiatric facility... does the entire DC Universe just ship their crazy villains off to Gotham? Because that would explain a lot about that town.

I was not too impressed with this version of Cheetah, she lost her agency, she was now someone else's tool. Even the original had some say in the matter of her villainy as it was a sorta split personality. I have never understood the how earlier Cheetahs were supposed to hold their own against Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is super-powered, the earlier Cheetahs were just people in suits and not even enhanced suits. Wonder Woman had to be holding back.
@Bolsonaro_em_Haia
@Bolsonaro_em_Haia 4 года назад
I never understood that either, but WW power levels pre-Byrne run were always all over the place. In this particular stance we at least have a credible reason to believe that WW is holding back because she knows that there is a well meaning person behind all the rage and fury.
@tkillcoin
@tkillcoin 4 года назад
I agree, and well put. In the features for "Wonder Woman: Bloodlines", screenwriter Mairghread Scott said she chose to have Barbara Ann Minerva take a serum that enhanced her even further, made her more animalistic, and less pretty. The outward transformation mirrored what had already taken place on the inside, but more importantly, Minerva had agency in affecting that change and embracing her darkness without apology. Even the slight retcon to Priscilla Rich takes away an important characteristic of her as a villain. If the Cheetah in the mirror is a manifestation of Rich's inner monologue that she's actively been trying to suppress, then (petty or not) her jealousy as a motivation for her crimes is hers, you can see how it works, and it's a perfect idea for someone like Diana to fight against. If what she sees in the mirror is a second personality, then Priscilla isn't really involved, and Wonder Woman is just beating up a lady who is mentally ill. Deborah Domaine gets it even worse. Her beloved(?) aunt dies right in front of her, and she's so startled that she's knocked unconscious, she wakes up just long enough to be tortured, and then presumably she's erased and replaced with The Cheetah. Ouch.

For me, the second Cheetah is the "real" Cheetah just because she started out when I was beginning to read comics. For me, it's a shame not to mention her other appearances, such as when she was a member of the version of the Secret Society of Super-Villains formed by the Ultra-Humanite that fought the JLA and JSA in a JLA/JSA crossover. And one thing that the first two Cheetahs have over all the others... at least they're not running around naked. Also, I think this Cheetah's creation is a precursor of Strikeforce Kobra, where Kobra decided to create a bunch of supervillains with the same codename as a bunch of old Batman villains. So Kobra can just do that. He just create any supervillain with any powers whenever he wants. He wasn't even just duplicating the powers that the old villains had; the new villains are often completely different. So, yeah, that's a thing he can do.

This origin was a bit contrived, but the character is ok far as Cheetahs go, IMO. Having her heel turn be a product of torture give her a bit of useful pathos, which was briefly revisited later in Justice League of America when she joined the Secret Society of Supervillains. But mostly I see this tale as evidence that Kobra, who was at the time being pushed as something of a major opponent for Wonder Woman, had not mellowed down. He was still cruel and ruthless. The story works better as a prelude to the confrontation with Kobra than as a debut for the second Cheetah, unfortunately. As for the continuity issues, I don't think it is useful to think too much about them. There were many characters who existed in a gray zone, and you could make a case for them existing in Earth-Two only, Earth-One only, or both. The original Cheetah was clearly one of those.

I never knew much about DC so this is all new to me. Changing continuities, soft rebooting backstories, and a little bit of "deadline's Tuesday, this is good enough, not like people will be reading this decades into the future". It was a little jarring when you mentioned Cobra. From context I did manage to figure out it's probably a DC/WW group of villains. But at the time my mind jumped to the GI Joe terrorist organization, because they sometimes cross over into Marvel comics. I thought that might amuse you.

The Cheetah story that was in Wonder Woman #230 was an Earth-Two story. This was at the time of the WW TV series when it was set in WWII, so the book was changed to be the Earth-Two WW in the 1940s. That lasted about a year, because the TV show was changed to be set in current time and was subsequently cancelled. The original Earth-One Cheetah just falls into the same category of the Earth-One and Two Lex Luthors, Jokers and others of the Superman and Batman rogues galleries. Also, I can read cursive because I read WW #230 when it came out in the 1970s.

It's my opinion that either Gerry Conway didn't take the multiple Earths into account when creating the second Cheetah, or he just went ahead and made the original Cheetah to be Debbi's aunt knowing most people either wouldn't catch the error or wouldn't care. Sasha, I am loving this deep-dive into all things Cheetah. I def look forward to more on this series. To your question... DD.... I think they threw Cobra into the mix to explain the costume enhancements (def an improvement). The brainwashing was to endear her to the audience and may have been the start to WW being sympathetic to the struggles that Cheetah fights (we see a few glimpses of that through the cannon) and can see it hinted at in the trailers for WW84. Do I like DD as a character? ... I don't think so. She brings some elements to the Cheetah crew, but all in all, is a transitional character.

Hi Sasha. I really enjoy your RU-vid channel… And I always look forward to new videos that you put out. In regards to this video, I do have some information which I am not sure if anyone else has commented yet. It’s possible that they have, but I decided not to run through every single comment to see. So if I’m repeating another comment than I apologize. The Cheetah and Diana in issue #230 are both from Earth 2. In the 70s, the wonder woman TV show premiered with her adventures initially happening during the World War II era. The comic books at that time decided to take the Wonder Woman adventures to Earth 2 in order to coincide with the same timeframe that was happening on the TV show. When the TV show was picked up by a different network, who updated it the 1970s, then the comic book went back to Earth 1 so her adventures were in present day. It’s actually very interesting to see how they made the transition in the comic books. If you have the time, you should go back and see the different comics where Wonder Woman transitions from Earth 1 to Earth 2 and then back to Earth 1 again. Anyway, again, if you have already seen this comment or know about this than I apologize for repeating it, but if not, hopefully it gives you a little bit more insight. Thanks again for the great videos.

Well, to be honest. before this issue my only exposure to the Cheetah was from the animated Super Friends series Challenge of the Super Friends and the characters portrayal as a member of the Legion of Doom. It wasn't until later on that I saw the older stories with Priscilla Rich as the original. That being said, for me the story worked at the time. It gave a sense of of how they were able to use her beliefs and passion as a tool to turn her into the Cheetah and with the fact that the original was her aunt there is the legacy factor and the fact that the potential was already there. I wonder though, if she had had time to process who her aunt was before Kobra got their hands on her, would she have been appalled that her aunt was Cheetah, or would she have, at least in part, understood how and why? I will admit I was a little disappointed myself that they didn't show Diana trying to have two dates at once. Admittedly that is probably because the necessity of there being a comedic take to it could have distracted from the serious nature of the rest of the story. I can imagine her, among other things, trying to make certain that Steve and the General don't see each other as on would most certainly invite the other, and their date to join him and his date and that would have made the illusion of being in two places at the same time much harder to maintain. (Too bad she didn't take a page from Superman's playbook and have a robot built in her secret identity for emergencies like he does, but I digress.) Or even if she had been seen in her other identity by the one she wasn't on a date with the same could have happened. The potential for comedy was there...and in a different...more lighthearted...issue that was more focused on her personal life than on fighting super villains it might have been right but here...maybe not so much...although it could have been a nice break from the serious tone...especially set against the Clockwork Orange brain washing that Debbie undergoes. What do you think? Would such a sequence have worked in the issue or been out of place?

I was never taught cursive but I can still read it as I learned it from reading books that thaught the subject. I was one of the very few in my class to actually know as all the others who did knew as well also had to learn it outside of school

Completley off topic but I was wondering: What´s with the costumes of the JSAs: Atom, Robin and Red Tornado 1. As for this Cheetah agree in both opinions: 1)the costume is a slightly improvement and 2)while it was nice to have her as the original Cheetah´s niece the stoy didn´t work. Maybe, if she had a different story (still Pricilla´s niece and Diana´s friend) then she could have made it as the modern age Cheetah (meaning the current look) without the need for Barbara.

The Atom is wearing his costume from after the war until the JSA series of the 1990s. Robin is wearing a hybrid costume of his original and Batman's. That suit lasted from the mid-60s until the late 70s. The original Red Tornado's costume was put together by a woman trying to protect her neighborhood from thugs and used whatever she had on hand; longjohns, a blanket for a cape and a soup pot for a helmet. The original RT's feature was more on the humorous side.

I think one could go a bit mad thinking about multiverse continuity more deeply than the writers and editors did. I am reminded of the line at the end of Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow: "This is an imaginary story. Aren't they all?"

I despised cursive so much that I vowed to always print everything except my payroll signature (as we called it in the military,...but even that has fallen by the wayside thanks to direct deposit and paycall no longer a thing) and to this day I keep that promise. I am,...The Printer!!! LOL. Hmm, does that mean my arch-nemesis is The Calligrapher???

They don’t teach cursive here in the USA anymore either. Employers complain that they can’t read the cursive handwriting that their employees learn in school.

I can still read and write cursive. I remember when I was in grade school and even a bit into high school, where they used to make us write in cursive because it would be the only accepted way to write (in college), which then lead me to not ever using cursive if I didn't have too. On the other hand, after basically years of not using cursive I challenged myself to write my college notes in cursive just to make sure I could. It was a math class, which is why I wasn't using my tablet to type notes.

I'm old enough to have learned cursive but have never used it at any point in my life. It's alleged use is speed but if you actually do it quickly it becomes incredibly illegible while sloppy, rushed printing reads fine.

I think my age range was one of the last to learn cursive, because my teacher really just half-assed teaching us it😅🤷‍♂️ as a result i can only half read cursive Still, that letter is easier to read than the time i tried to read voyage of the beagle😭 after reading that, i understand how dyslexic people feel🤦‍♂️😅🤣 🤣🤣🤣Anytime anyone complains about anything from now on, my reply will be "Ok, but what about wonder woman on two dates?!?!“

@Lookie With Lukie I didn't know about kids not learning to write cursive style until a couple of years ago when a friend's 15 year old daughter admitted that she did not know how to do it and had never been taught. Back in my day, we had a class devoted to learning cursive, around third grade maybe. Being artistically inclined, I really got into it and developed such a super fancy cursive style that the teachers had to make me tone it down. Some years later while in the Army, one of my buddies used to get letters from his grandfather who had studied penmanship back in the 1930s. His handwriting looked like something you would see on an ancient scroll and put my fanciest cursive to shame.

I think currently in Ireland cursive is taught but as soon as you leave primary they don't care how you write as long as it's your best looking writing. I can read cursive myself. It's more to do with someone's handwriting on whether I can read it
