THE NBA STORYTELLER he would probably be a spot up shooter off the bench in today's nba because he isn't versatile enough to start. Similar to jimmer fredette he is an amazing shooter with no defense, rebounding, passing, or handles.

You are vastly underrating his impact as an offensive player. Reggie was not just a spot-up shooter, he had great off-ball movement, and his darting runs often scrambled the opposition's defense (Reggie's shooting warranted a man following him at all times) and created an easy score for a teammate.
@kevinestes9800
@kevinestes9800 28 дней назад
He was like a hybrid of Steph Curry and JJ Redick. Great off ball movement, similar to JJ, but was also extremely impactful as a #1 option, similar to Steph. Mitch Richmond had better stats, but couldn't carry teams to even a .500 record. Neither were the best defenders, because defense wasn't their job for various reasons (one was a shooter and the other had to carry their team every night), but Mitch is very comparable to Devin Booker today, without the help Booker has had the last four years (like Booker, Mitch was very good at three pointers and midrange, and was above the likes of Van Exel, Mashburn, and Ceballos in terms of volume scorers of his day, similar to Booker being above Clarkson, Poole, Simons, Malik Monk, etc. today). Still, Reggie did a LOT with the likes of Rik Smits, Mark Jackson, Derrick McKey, and Antonio Davis most of his career (and the team he went to the Finals with was the worst defensive team he played with in his prime, with him, Jalen Rose, Jackson, Smits, Croshere, Sam Perkins, old Chris Mullin, etc. not known for their defense at all. That says a LOT for Reggie's impact, as going to the Finals with Jalen Rose as the second best player is similar to LeBron making the finals with Mo Williams, Szczerbiak, or Jamison as his #2. His Artest/Jermaine O'Neal teams were MUCH better defensively, and he likely got away with getting that team to the 2000 Finals because the Knicks, Heat, and Sixers all lacked offense despite their slow pace and had little ball movement compared to the Lakers and Kings in the West). Both Reggie and Mitch deserve their HOF status (for Reggie's deep playoff runs and Mitch's overall numbers, winning a ring with the Lakers, and accolades and winning a gold medal, on the same team as Reggie. It is a testament to how good he was that he was invited to the Olympics despite being a volume scorer on a bad team, like Booker was until the pandemic year when his efficiency improved. I mean, Jamal Crawford, Lou Williams, Jason Terry, JR Smith, Monta Ellis, Nick Young, etc. NEVER got that opportunity). As an overall player, Mitch was better (at least he got his reward his final season for rotting on those awful Kings and Wizards teams where he had to do everything, though he had Juwan Howard, Rod Strickland, Chris Whitney, and Tracy Murray on his Wizards teams, who were all the same player in that they were offensive players who played zero defense, and had a foul prone center in Jahidi White as their rim protector, which was par for the course back in the day, similar to Andrew DeClercq and Vitaly Potapenko, but doesn't translate to "good defense" by any means), but for overall impact and intangibles, Reggie wins. Taking teams like the 90s Knicks and 90s Bulls to the limit, and even winning in 1995, means something. You don't get to the playoffs nearly every year, despite being known as mainly a shooter as the first option, without a little something else.

-Pacers only made it to ECF 3 times when Bulls were revelant, they faced Bulls only once -Pacers also got eliminated 5 TIMES IN THE FIRST ROUND during 90s. Smh, so apparently scoring 25 points and 27 points in games 6 and 7 is underporforming? Not to mention the fact that the Knicks had a great defense that year. What did you expect 50 points? Also why did you complain about how few rebounds he gets? The 90s were one of the most physical time periods of basketball. If Reggie went up for 10 rebounds a game his body would get absolutely punished. He would be out of the NBA in 10 years. Also the NBA was more divided up by posessions back then. Unlike today, centers and forwards got the rebound like 90% of the time, if anything Miller is under rated

Sheed, Chauncey, Rip, Big Ben, Tayshaun they fit together too well and Malice at the Palace took away the last chance for Reggie to get a Chamionship in 2004-2005 with Ron Artest out for the whole season and playoffs, and Stephen Jackson and Jermaine Oneal missing games in the season.

true. reggie always subscribed to the team game in fact if my memory is correct he never shot more than 28 shots in a game though he could if he wanted to. in his last season, when his team was decimated due to suspensions by the malice in the palace, he had to carry his team and as a result he was often leading his team in scoring and even scored 39 points in a game at age 39. it was a proof that he could have done a lot more to improve his stats before but he was just a great teammate and is okay letting the younger players to shine.

He’s actually underrated. His offball movement wasn’t talked about enough because most of time people are watching who is holding the ball. Offball movement contributes ALOT on offense as evidenced by those 4 titles at the bay, especially in the current era. Three things why Miller is a legit top 40ish superstar all-time: First, he was BALLIN WHEN IT MATTERED most. Look at his regular szn vs playoff stats. He is like Jimmy Butler, lazy during regular szn but pumping everything during playoffs. Indiana had been in 5 ecf entriely bc of him and yea practically he had no help. 2nd, as i’ve said earlier his OFFBALL movement did a tremendous impact offensively and paved way for the revolution of offense like nash (albeit abit later) which is the meta now. 3rd, he’s efficiency as shooter compared to this era was yeah, great but not goat level. But he played in the 90s. The volume of his threes were an outlier during that time yet he shot at an elite efficiency. It’s like Luka Doncic making post moves now and actually making it work. A bit inverse but you get the point. So yea Miller was one of those superstars that didn’t got enough accolades bc most of the audience, especially during the 80s and 90s, are just casuals and just watching basketball to be entertained and thru the week. I’d also put him above Harden as a better SG anyday also bc Miller actually had defence.

Nobody looks back on a player saying " oh yeah that player was great he had 4 ECF appearances" the goal is to win a championship in which he made 1 app in 2000. Lets call a spade a spade.

grassmeade I know he talked about them. But he still did say they never had a chance to go. Even though they did pretty much every year from 1994 to 2004. And yes I know he highlighted that. Brayden Wormer "maybe he didnt play great in the biggest but that doesnt mean his team was never a contender" ...... that makes no sense at all. When looking at the greats, one of the things you measure them on is when they stepped up in big moments so im not getting where you are coming from.... He never said the Pacers were never a contender, in fact he said that they were more of a contender with the addition of Mark price Antonio Davis and Rick Smits, which in turn debunks the myth that he was "CARRYING" the team and had no help.

For example, I remember him from the 90’s when I was a kid as being a good player, but not in the top tier of players in that era. Legend Of Winning I don't even think you even mention the fact that he had a 50-40-90 season. You said his teams never really had a chance to go to the finals even though they actually did go to the finals. And they went to the ECF like 5 other times and 3 I believe went 7 games. You say he isn't a good scorer, just a good shooter. But if you round up his PPG average when it was 0.5 or less points away from 20 points, he had 9 consecutive 20 point seasons. You can't just have a good 3 point shot and average 21 points per game for an 8 year span. He even averaged 15 points a game in his last season at age 38. In fact only 3 seasons of his career did he not average at least 15 points, that includes his rookie season. You tried to say he isn't as clutch as people say he is by showing his numbers in a couple of games in the series, and the numbers weren't even bad. You didn't mention how they nearly beat the Bulls. Didn't mention how they gave the Lakers a scare and how Reggie out performed Kobe in that series. You tried to downplay there finals appearance by saying the East was weak. Even though, they beat there long time rivals, the Knicks, who went to the finals the season before. They beat the 76ers, who would go to the finals the next season, and they beat the Bucks, who were a very strong team. I could go on

Have you ever watched reggie play? I cant take you serious right now. You said reggie didnt have multiple ways of scroing. Thats like saying a post player that only post up cant score in different ways. He didnt just spot up. He ran off screens. His jab stwp then step back was nuts. His triple threat game was second on to MJ. He had a very nice floater that he would do. Also look at Reggies scoring numbers. He played for a slow it down coach mostly in Brown. Most number ootiins avg around 20 shots per game. Only once is reggie career did he attempt more then 15 shots per game!!!!!! Thats nuts when you consider he was the focal point. Imagine if he took more shots? Also glen and mitch dont get the same love because of a couple of reasons. 1. Success. I rather have good numbers and my team do well then stat pad and my team suck like glen and mitch teams did. 2. They did not carry there teams like reggie. 3. Clutch. We not even going to start that convo. 4. He was a dog and wanted to kill everybody. Reggie is actually under rated. I read a article once by sports magizine. They said by adjusted shots and TS% reggie is the best scorer in NBA history. He just wasnt selfish. Yet at the end of games he would juat flip a switch. He could have done that all game.

Jay Lawson well said, this video is well put together but also focuses a lot on shortcomings that we're out of Reggies' control. For example coaches new he was an asset behind the arc so they designed plays to keep him out there for a kick out when defenders were drawn inside. This doesn't give him a lot of opportunity for rebounds, given the basket is crouded by much more physical and stronger players. The main thing I use when forming an opinion about a players greatness is the testimony of his coaches and teammates and the opponents that actually faced him. The majority of those comments are positive and that's coming from someone who experienced it.

There were plenty of 3 point shooters, but the way Reggie exploited it and the amount of clutch shots he'd hit is different. The moments of hitting clutch shot after clutch shot in the playoffs is what really stands out. No one cares about statpadding in the regular season, having a 4th quarter like he did against the knicks is what people remember. The way Korver gets open for 3s now is the way Reggie used to except Reggie was way better at it. Sprinting around screens all night, exploiting the pump fake and kicking legs to draw fouls (a dwayne wade special) making the defender hesitant to get in his space. If the defender jumps he dribbles by and just hits the mid range or runs in for the lay up. He was the number 1 option on a team that contended for over a decade, which would also have something to do with it. The majority of the 3 point shooters ahead of him were spot up shooters who sat in the corner waiting for their dominate big man to draw the double to get themselves open looks.
@thegeno424
@thegeno424 6 лет назад
The Pope Mobile first of all, saying that Reggie Miller is a better 3 point shooter than Kyle Korver is asinine. Kyle Korver has had years where he shot 50% from 3.
@arexyouxepicxenough
@arexyouxepicxenough 6 лет назад
Korver was never the main guy on his team the same way Reggie was, it's like saying Klay Thompson is on that level when he's a GOAT tier 3 and D player but he's mostly a spot up shooter. Easier to have a higher shooting percentage as a second or third option. Though I will say Korver has been insane as a closer off the bench so far this year.
@thegeno424
@thegeno424 6 лет назад
The Pope Mobile I see your point but we werent talking about being more important to your team. Of course Reggie was more important to the Pacers than Korver ever was to the Hawks. You said Reggie was better at spotting up, coming off screens, exploiting the pump fake, and flailing his legs for fouls calls, therefor making him better at shooting the 3. First of all, you seem to watch some Cavs games, so you should damn well know that once Kyle come off those screens from Channing Frey, that ball is in the air no matter how Kyle feet are. He shoots it in no time no matter how his feet are, and if you somehow are able to contest, he will give you a pump and you'll go flying. Secondly, I'm pretty sure kicking your legs up when shooting is a offensive foul, so that is just wrong. Btw Mitch Richmond and Glen Rice were point guard soooooo, they did the opposite of spot up. Reggie got to spot up more than them.
@arexyouxepicxenough
@arexyouxepicxenough 6 лет назад
Yeah, they're both underrated. Glen Rice has the best looking jump shot I've ever seen. It was how Reggie got to his spot that made him special. If you can look up that open court episode when they're on the court talking about their games. Reggie's way to get his open look is tricky. So many subtleties most miss. The dude was a number 1 option star shooter on a playoff team with no handles. 3D couldn't just go and do that, Sam Cassell couldn't just go do that.
@replicantona
@replicantona 6 лет назад
The Pope Mobile I could've tell by your comment that you'd been watching too much Open Court lol, that's his friends there, ofc they'll sing poetry about him and overrate the shit out the man. Revisionist history among buddies is always a snugfest. He was super limited for his body type and height. With that wing span and height how could he be such an awful defender and rebounder still baffles me, no handles, no playmaking, NADA. He just had a very good stop and pop mid range shot, and a good running floater and ran through screens and found his spots very well on the court to go along with his very good shooting. That's about it.

Jake Quake Jordan is a bit overrated too. I don’t think he’s “head and shoulders” above everyone else. Is he the GOAT? Possibly. It’s close between him, Lebron, Kareem, Wilt. But his team could function without him, his era was weak (Miller’s teams were even pushing him to 7 games), and he would not “DOMINATE/AVERAGE 50” in today’s NBA. He’d actually be less effective. Look at DeRozan. He was averaging 27 last year on around 45-50 percent shooting and yet very few people put him in their top 15 players because he couldn’t shoot threes. Jordan would be far better than him, but still inefficient as he couldn’t shoot threes till the line was moved closer for him.

This video is spot on. If I knew nothing else, but this, 18 years in the league and 5 all-star appearances is certainly not hall of fame material. Reggie Miller would be a nice #3 best player on your team to have. A great/good shooter who loiters around the 3 point line, who you can pitch it back too for jump shots throughout the game. A high percentage free throw shooter to give it too when teams are intentionally fouling you down the stretch. He's not a guy you build a team around, but he could be a nice addition to many teams of the time (however given that he was overrated, his cost would have been a bit inflated... the cost of a #1 guy, when he's a team #3 or #2 guy at best). I'm curious what approximate player didn't or doesn't make the Hall of Fame because of Miller getting in, which is redic... it must be because of his involvement with basketball after his retirement.

You’re totally arguing against your own point in my opinion. Longevity of ones career is a factor that we judge someone’s greatness on. How long and how often can you answer the bell. You wouldn’t say that Andrew Bynum is a better overall player than Bill Walton just because Bynum had a couple of better seasons statistically than Walton. Even though Walton is overrated he still had a longer and better career than Bynum and most NBA experts would deem Walton a better Center than Bynum. We have to be very careful when we are trying to compare players in different eras. The game and rules are constantly changing. If you’re going to make the bold statement that Miller was overrated and not a top 10 shooting guard then please make a video with who you believe are the best 10 shooting guards in NBA history. Until then this video is just complete conjecture....
@Omakhara
@Omakhara 6 лет назад
Htowns Finest44 you are awarded greatness and prestige based on your achievements individually and as a team. Magic and Bird did in a decade what few players do in 2 so saying that a long career may be misleading is a absolutely valid point. Greatness comes in concentrated packages, or we atleast remember them as such afterwards . Magic 5*, Jordan 6/6 * etc it's like saying your sex was the best because it lasted 2.5 hours... Is it impressive? Sure... Does it validate your point.. Hell no.
@htownsfinest4471
@htownsfinest4471 6 лет назад
MKpwn You are awarded greatness based on team success and individual accolades, I’m not arguing that but should that the only things we examine when ranking a player? Narrative plays a big part too. Miller only played with one other Hall of Famer in his career and that was only for three seasons in the late 90’s. Miller helped take talent challenged Pacers teams to the Eastern Conference Finals and played against stacked Bulls, Knicks, and Magic teams in the early to mid 90’s. Most people couldn’t even name 5 let alone 10 of Reggie’s teammates. Miller was not gifted athletically nor did he have a great handle on the ball. He had no go to moves nor was he quick of foot. He worked for everything that he got. This man made a living coming off of screens and being a catch and shoot player. And still lead his teams to relatively high playoff success. You can’t always use the championship ring narrative as a measure of a players success. Remember only one team can win the chip. That means 435 other players in the NBA don’t. And there are a lot of talented guys that have never won a ring or been named an all star. Remember all star voting is voted by the fans and off seasons accolades are mostly media voted awards.
@Omakhara
@Omakhara 6 лет назад
Htowns Finest44 narrative is the most important factor for a non casual. So I definitely agree on that point. What the '' problem '' with Reggie is, or the reason many like him, many may think he is overrated etc is that he was a star, a likeable personality and still remains sort of relevant by being in the media today which may confuse many people. Therefore many retired players who are also part of the media, rave about his Greatness and clutchness, which may or may not be valided but for many people is overshadowed by his ''underachieving'', which can only be seen as such when he is in the conversation with other great players, especially other great shooters. He had bad luck like so many other players in their careers but I think being so long in the league and being unable to develop a more rounded game is on him. Looking at his stats, I find it sad to see little progression in mentioned weaknesses such as assists and rebounds. I know the league was different back then but I still belive a talented player such as him can learn new skills, no matter how formed his game is after a couple of seasons in the NBA.
@htownsfinest4471
@htownsfinest4471 6 лет назад
MKpwn Underachieving? If anything Reggie is underrated not overrated. It’s hard to argue against that Miller was the greatest Indiana Pacer of all time. His job as a shooting guard is not to set people up and pass the ball. Shooting guards are supposed to score the basketball. Not to be disrespectful but most young guys don’t really know anything about basketball. You listen to ESPN and they have you thinking that Kobe was a top 10 player of all time and that LeBron is on Michael Jordan’s level. Stop the madness brother. See back in those days you didn’t have point guards scoring 30 and 40 points in games like that. Most good point guards in the era of the 70’s 80’s and 90’s would score under 20 points a night and have about 10 assist. The point guard set up the team. Now you have these new wave guards that are really combo guards that can do everything now. But in those days you could hand check and today you can not. Which is why I say it’s hard to compare players in different eras. You have to look at the players stats, compare him to his peers when he played, and look at the rules in that era. And speaking of rules Reggie Miller changed the rule books in the NBA. No kicking out your leg when you shoot the ball. Only great players force the NBA to change their rules period. You have to understand the politics behind the scenes of why the rules are changed in the first place. I disagree with you on how Reggie should have had more assist and rebounds. Again not his job to rebound at a high level or pass the ball to set up others. His job was only to score. And by the way who can argue that Reggie was not one of the clutches players of all time? If you think Ray Allen is a top 10 shooting guard then Miller is one as well. The only difference between the two is Allen has two rings and Miller has none. www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/pcm_finder.cgi?request=1&sum=1&p1=millere01&p2=allenra02&p3=&p4=&p5=&p6= #facts

Htowns Finest44 look im not saying that it is my perspective on things, but why there exist a dichotomy in the public eye about Miller's standings in the all time list in the first place. I know what the traditional roles of players are but the game is moving towards the direction of being dominated by shooters with overall skills that are bigger than previous guards and will continue thus trend . Centers will also soon see a comeback in my opinion but not the way they used to be utilized.

Reggie ain't overrated. The dude is one of the top 5 shooters of all-time, and possibly the most clutch player in NBA history. He played on Spurs East, where scoring was spread around, which hurt his numbers - not that they're bad. Yet he constantly had the Pacers in contention without any other real superstars. Was one of the few players to take Mike to 7 games in the playoffs. 8 points in 9 seconds and throwing up the choke sign at Spike Lee are 2 of the greatest moments in NBA history. Btw, much of what you say in the video is overly harsh. Reggie had a seemingly endless supply of energy. He ran defenders ragged on the offensive end. Maybe you don't consider him a good athlete, but he was - at the very least - an extremely well conditioned high energy player. Mentioning rebounds is kinda silly as that was more a product of how he was used and the systems they ran. Guards didn't get triple doubles in the 80's like they do now really. It was a big man's game. Also, those game 6 and 7 performances against the Knicks weren't really bad overall. Certainly not as bad as you claim. As to the "carrying" part, this is so warped. Reggie was definitely the best player on those Pacers teams. And of course the teams performance got worse when guys got hurt. Even the best players need help. Kobe couldn't carry Smush Parker to the playoffs. LeBron has missed the playoffs 3 times. Reggie. Needed. Help. Period. They would've been more lost without Reggie than Rik Smits or Dale Davis though. Lets be honest.

Agree with you about Reggie's all-around game; I never thought he was a basketball legend. However, I do consider him one of the greatest shooters the game has ever seen, and actually, you sort of indirectly reinforced just how good he was. Consider what you said: he couldn't finish well around the rim, he didn't have a variety of offensive moves, and he could not easily get his own shot. These are all things that contribute to shooting percentage. So for him to have such comparatively high percentages despite these glaring offensive deficiencies speaks to exactly how accurate of a marksman he really was.

With all due respect, Reggie Miller is one of the most hated villains in the MSG. What Reggie did against the Knicks is stuff of legends. 25 point explosion against the Knicks in 94, scoring 8 points in 9 seconds to seal a game that many thought the Pacers lost, hitting clutch buckets against the Knicks, going toe to toe against Jordan and had a legit chance of knocking the Last Dance Bulls out of the playoffs. Reggie may not have had the stats, but he was definitely big time when it came to clutch time. He's still one of the top players to ever don a Pacers uniform if not the greatest to ever do so.

I never knew this but Reggie's true shooting percentage 61.4% is higher then Lebron, MJ, AI, Kobe, D-wade.

@andrewqiao372
@andrewqiao372 6 лет назад
You are nuts. Reggie Miller was the Pacers' #1 option for over 15 years, and his career TS% is better than MJ, Kobe, KD, Curry, LeBron. In fact, only 5 players in NBA history had a better TS% than Miller's .614; three of them were centers (7'1"+) and the other two players in the 70's. He was an innovator and once had the most 3pt makes in NBA history, along with a whole other host of 3pt records, and he's remembered as an originator of the specialized 3pt shooter and was definitely one of the greatest shooters of all time

Please watch the video because I talked about him being the "innovator" of the 3pt shot
@andrewqiao372

Yes, I did watch the video. All you are doing is cherrypicking. Miller has the SECOND most 3 point field goals in the entire NBA. The fact that he was able to stay consistently elite at 3 point shots is amazing. The fact that he has elite conditioning is already amazing. Ofc, there were many other great shooters, but he was one of the best in the league. I could care less if he did not lead in 3 point shooting when he has the second most in the league.

Regardless, Miller was still able to have the SECOND most 3 point field goals, that's an accomplishment. He did this while shooting nearly 40% from 3

Man, you a Knicks fan? You literally talked about his lack of athleticism and continued to brush right over it as you hammered home your agenda here. His lack of athleticism is what makes his accomplishments and his career so impressive! And nobody in Indiana has ever said he carried those 90s teams, if anything the guys you listed around him are REVERED. But he was the main scorer for those teams. And I agree with you when you say he was more of a a shooter than a scorer. Which puts his lowly game 7s that you highlighted into perspective a bit more. As he was not only asked, but HAD to be the main scorer. I can imagine it would have been taxing. Imagine being inferior in nearly all aspects of the game to the GREATEST player of all time and still taking him to 7 games? I'm not gonna go on forever, but your agenda is clear here. At least see it from all sides next time. And I guarantee you don't pin this comment. Ha.

Jordan was 35 during that series,so yeah not in prime & for athleticism,Curry isn't athletic but he is leagues above what Reggie Miller ever was....heck you could argue Klay is better than reggie(he actually is tbf) His fans only talk about the Knicks series because that's the only thing he has,wasn't even a top 5 guard,in today's NBA would be a bench spot up shooter Like always everything about the 90's is overrated,even MJ is as Kobe is the real GOAT

So u clearly didn’t watch enough of those bucks basketball games to think Ray Allen was carrying the bucks, just because ray Allen was the best player doesn’t mean that you can ignore glenn robinson who was an all star and Sam cassell who was also an all star who helped the team as well

@@kylethomas2993 He didn't have the capacity to take more shots than "other players" because he could hardly create his own damn shot. He depended on getting open from his teammates setting screens.
