Calvin Miller He was better. I hate when people say his prime was in Toronto, he was one of the most complete all around players in the game when he played for nets. He could play on the fast break, could post up, could run pick and roll, was a better shooter, was craftier around the rim etc

It seems like Carter developed a really good work ethic too late in his career. If you look at what he’s been doing in recent years to keep his body in good enough shape to be able to stay in the NBA, it’s actually really impressive. He shows up to the gym before any of his teammates (if I recall correctly, often more than an hour before anyone else), and he often does workouts after the game. He also goes through cryotherapy every once in a while. He claims that he does this because he still loves the game - and he says that he’ll continue to do so until the day that he wakes up and doesn’t feel motivated to put in the work. I don’t think that Vince was nearly as dedicated back in the day. But imagine if he had been! He could’ve been absolutely dominant, basically unstoppable. The fact that he was averaging over 27 points per game at one point while presumably not pushing himself as hard as he possibly could have potentially means that he could’ve been a top-three player in the NBA for five or more years in a row. He might’ve been able to win a title, or at least make it to the NBA finals. It’s unfortunate, especially as a fan of Vince, to know that he didn’t start working as hard as he could until it became evident that it’d be necessary just to stay in the league. At least we still get the pleasure of seeing him in the league even at such an old age, though. He’s doing something now that few players are able to accomplish.
Vince Carter didn’t have the greatest work ethic, however he wasn’t lazy. A guy like Andrea Bargnani had a 20 PPG season without putting in ANY work and was still a bust. Why? Well because his career outside of that season was very underwhelming, and if Carter had as bad of a work ethic as Bargnani, he wouldn’t be as good as he was. But at least he learned and actually developed a work ethic, Bargnani on the other hand didn’t care and could’ve been the greatest power forward or at least top 10 at that position if he put in the work. Notice how MJ, LeBron, and Kobe all have legendary work ethics. That’s why they’re some of the greatest players of all time. And I personally believe that all of them are in my top 3
Derek L. let's not try to take anything away from Vince's greatness yes he is quite overrated but he was by no stretch of the imagination a bad player in fact if he had more help on the Raptors he probably would have gone a lot farther in the playoffs

Weese not really Melo has all NBA selections, all star appearances, MVP conversations, scoring title, and has been regarded as an easy top 15 scoring threat of all time due to his versatility. And unlike VC he is a strong rebounder, the only thing missing on Melo resume is a ring while VC has a lot of different things missing.
mrslash blade VC also has all nba selections and all star appearances. Melos scoring ability is vastly overrated due to his lack of efficiency compared to other scorers. If you compare VCs peak years (1998-2011) to Melos (2003-2016, I took this season off because while Melo has been on a decline, it's on full display now), the only categories Melo leads in are points by 1 and rebounds by 1. Not to mention VC plays way better defense and is a better passer. Melo has massively underachieved compared his peers. Also, you mentioned Melo was in MVP conversations. 1 year where you finished and EXTREMELY DISTANT 3rd, doesn't mean you were in the conversation. Hell, the other year he accomplished any playoff success (2009) he didn't even get a SINGLE VOTE for MVP. While the real driving force behind that Denver team, Billups finished 6th.

Vince Carter was a very productive player while in Toronto and New Jersey, and you can't overlook injuries. You expected Carter to develop and progress after his first season in Jersey? The guy was already 30 years old, history shows once the average player in the NBA reaches the age of 27-28-29 that their play significantly starts to decline. He lost his youthful athleticism, and had to rely on his jump shot as his primary way to score. Carter was never a guy you were going to build your franchise around, if he had better teammates around him for his career while in his prime, he would've been better suited as the 2nd option. Instead of making a hot take video by calling him an underachiever, it's better to say that he just peaked early in his career.
That's false. You simply can't put every NBA player in a box and say between the ages of 27-32 is when they're supposed to be at their best. Some guys peak early (Damon stoudamire, tyreke evans, etc.) and some guys experience their best years well into their 30's (nash, reddick..). In VC's case, because of injuries suffered in Toronto, he was a guy that had his best years early into his career, which was HIS peak.
The problem is you keep talking about points points points. In New Jersey you had 2 other guys who would score 20+ PPG in Jason Kidd and RJ. You didn't have that in Toronto. So he may have been scoring the same as he was in Toronto but his shooting percentages, defense, playmaking and highlights were even better than before. He was also a better leader in NJ. Honestly, the NJ version of Vince was his best form ever. He was so well rounded and you obviously don't know that the Nets organization turned out to be just as bad as the owner and GM were extremely stingy. We had Nenad Kristic and Jason Collins starting at the 4 and 5 for Vince's entire stint as a Net. That's unacceptable from a team perspective. Not to mention their bench was always filled with old washed up players and scrubs. It's much deeper than you think. To say he's underachieved is false. Vince's career accomplishments are infinite. And not to mention the impact he had on basketball. It's disrespectful to say he's underachieved when he's transformed the game of basketball.
I think people that view players like Carter as underachievers are the same people that forget that championship are won by a team, and only 1 team wins the chip and it's usually the best team; players like Carter, Iverson, and McGrady were players that had very bad teams. This is something LeBron learned immediately which is why he's always recruiting or jumping ship; history won't remember him crying for help, it'll remember the chips. This talk of underachieving could've also been said about Pierce, Ray Allen and Garnett had they not linked up and won once, but before that Celtic's chip those 3 were headed mostly in the same "underachievers" path, outside of Garnett's 04 MVP which would've put him in that Barkley box. Wade would've been another one had he retired and not won a chip to be seen as underachieving. Not everyone is lucky enough to play with other superstars in those times. If Carter should be blamed for anything it should be for being selfless, he should've have shot more to put in perspective from 99-00 to 08-09 Carter averaged 23.9ppg 44%FG on 19.5FGA. that's less attempts per game than Kobe who played with Shaq, less attempts and higher FG% than Iverson, and even less attempts and higher % than McGrady; basically, Vince should've shot the ball more, even in clutch time where from 00-09 he was top 3 most clutch under 2minutes, under 24sec and under 6secs. I know usage rates weren't a big thing in the 2000s but I'd like to see Vince's compares to everyone else. Another thing, Even tho it's out of his control but the fact that McGrady left when they could've been the east's dynamic duo or him getting traded instead of him and Bosh becoming a duo in toronto. He was reborn in NJ indeed but those NJ teams weren't great after Kenyon martin left. J. Kidd was not much of a scorer, never average 20 in his career and never averaged 15 whipe like Carter was in NJ but he could definitely pass, defend and rebound. Jefferson was a good win to complement Carter. The rest of the team was trash, garbage big men and weak bench. Selflessness struck again in Orlando where he should've been the man and not Howard. Howard should've been the big guy who protected the paint, ran the floor, clean boards and caught lobs, his post game was basic as can be and boston show everyone. @@AnishBhethanabotla Actually he was returning from arthroscopic knee surgery, which was wayyy worse than then it is today. After his 02 injury he became more of a jump shooter and those last year's in Toronto was bad because of that transformation needed to occur to preserve himself, when he got to the Nets it was much easier for him to score because he shared scoring duties with Richard Jefferson and Jason Kidd being a great distributer. But that Nets bench was aweful, and could never overcome an injury to anyone on the big 3 which constantly happened. Forcing the Nets to a lower seed in the playoffs and having a terrible bench against a good team caused them to never go deep in the playoffs. They Nets at that time also lacked interior players, when Cater came to the team which was a serious problem for them defenseively.
I'm not saying VC is an all-time great, but the man was a fantastic player. He was drafted FIFTH overall in the 1998 draft after players like Michael Olowakandi and Ralph LaFrentz, so coming into the league people were not expecting him to be some "game changing" player, just a very good. He did have some of his best seasons within his first five years in the league, but you can't punish the man for being great at a young age. Plus, at that time, players who went to college were not typically "one and done's" so players were often coming into the league more mature than ever. Also, VC "only made 8 all-star games and 2 all-nba teams"? Since when is that not a huge achievement? Players like Ray Allen only have 2 all-nba selections and we all know how great he was. While Vince did hit his peak early, he was still consistent throughout his prime as a great scorer, and even adapted into a great role players for great teams like the Mavs. Obviously he's not near legends like Kobe or MJ, but I think he's on the same level as guys like Paul Pierce and T-mac. You can't possibly say he's one of the biggest underachievers ever though when guys who have come into the league with great potential are out of the league within a few seasons, meanwhile Vince has played 20 great years.

@Shawn Kemp I slightly disagree. He's offensively, at least in his prime as sharp as Kobe, Even Jordan. The difference was that he never embraced the pressure of winning the way those guys did. So many times during the playoffs in his Net days, he played very "safe"; good enough not to be blamed during a loss, but certainly not good enough to win. It's the reason why he's played so long; he never left it all on the court. Even today, hes capable of throwing down a between the legs dunk, but still doesn't mix it up competition wise. Go figure.
I think it's a little bit of both. I don't think you can question the work ethic of a man who is still playing in the NBA at the age of 41. You don't do that unless you put in the work off the court to stay in tip-top condition. But I also think he was satisfied with being a star, and while he kept himself in top shape, never did much to expand his game from where it was when he came into the league. Other people expected more of Carter than he expected of himself. But he'll make it to the Hall of Fame someday, anyway.
Speaking as a Raptor fan... watching Vince up close. Everything fell apart when Tracy left for Orlando. It all went downhill after that. Both he and TMac made bad choices in leaving Toronto.

Stop overrating Melo. He's not an underachiever, he's just not very good. People always overrate the ability to score which is literally the only skill Melo has. Terrible defender, terrible passer, terrible off the ball. Total ball stopper. Underachiever implies he just needed to try harder, but Melo's overall game is a terrible fit for how basketball should be played.
The video is mostly right about Carter. Where it fails is it's not mentioned that Carter was always hurt. He played hurt in the playoffs all of the time. Also the series in Orlando against Boston was the worst officiating I've ever seen and they were still competitive. The league wanted Boston back in the finals against the Lakers. Regardless, we should be talking about Carter like TMac, Grant Hill and D Rose. That's how bad the injuries were. I really monitored his career and injuries were always an issue. He probably still has the best offensive game I've ever seen, but his determination was different.

This why I can't take Legend of Winning or any other simple minded people seriously. Their opinions are flawed with lacking logic or physics. First, basketball is a team sport, not an individual one. Second, when cross comparing players you compare their primes, not their ending careers. In that case, most stars were better than Kobe, because he was shit his rookie year. But no one wanna add the rookie years in the credibility info. And third, some athletes are more fortunate than others. To say Pierce is better than Carter because he shot more? Okay, then Carter is better than Kobe because he's still playing, Pierce is better than Kobe because he averaged more in his ending years, and Reggie Miller is better than all of them because heout lasted all og them playing nearly the same way instead of progressing better or deteriorating over the years. PS: It's not the player that makes the team great it's how the player fits the team. This is nonsense. Carter became the games best dunker, highlights, game winners, scoring. Carter Revolutionized the game for a younger generation and changed the landscape of the nba, raptors and Canada. Very few stars leave an imprint on the game the way Carter did.
Its really amazing how he's had 2 levels his entire career he was the same player for 8 years (a star) and then became a role player for the rest of his career basically going up and down on ppg for the rest of career

Justin Last J-Rich would spend all year planning his dunk contest. Vince just came up with his dunks on the spot. J-Rich was in THREE dunk contests to Vinces one, so he got to show more dunks then Vince. Vince was a million times better dunker. J-Rich also was a very one dimensional dunker (couldn't dunk good off one foot and was only really good with his right foot forward) while Vince was VERY well rounded. Hell Vince is in his 40s and he still can do a two foot take off between the legs without even trying And no. No one today dunks close to as good as Vince. Vinces in game dunk reel shits all over anyone's today, and its not even close. Griffin, Gordon, Zach etc... Their in game dunk reel looks like crap compaired to Vinces
Daz True, but the ability to dunk through traffic or with contact is a VERY helpful skill that does make you a better player. Often a dunk is much harder to defend then a layup. Dunking is not everything, but it is a skill that helps your game
I think Vince was one of the greatest offensive machines I ever saw during his first 10 years. 24,000 points isn't too bad neither. Sucks playing during an era when there is Lebron, Iverson, Kobe, Duncan and a ton of other legends in their prime.

The man put Canada on the map in the basketball world. He made 8 all star teams and ranks in the top 30 in all time scoring. He's played in the NBA for like 18 years. He is only overrated in the context that he is probably the most naturally physically talented wing player in league history. With that in mind, he could have been a top 5 all time imo. Seeing as he will undoubtedly be a hof inductee, is likely going to finish top 20 all time in scoring, top 5 3pt made, and will likely set a record for career longevity/seasons played, I think he's done pretty well. There's a lot of hyperbolic stuff in this video (only 8 all star appearances, not a top 10 player of his generation, etc...) but I'll just say I disagree with some points, and agree he underachieved, but is still an all time great player.

VC's weakness were as follows; 1) Poor quickness/agility (not the same as speed) 2) Poor ability to read the defense (this is also Derozan's biggest flaw) 3) Made to improvements to his game such as adding moves like Kobe did every year 4) Too much reliance on shooting and not aggressive enough 5) Not competitive enough/settles

The Biggest Underachiever is Derrick Coleman(I know most don't know him). Derrick was a beast and a point Powerforward who got NBA's first 100 Million Dollar Contract and basically once he got his money...Didn't give a fk!! He even got fat and created future concerns about giving players big contracts. Young Derrick Coleman was amazing and very similar to Magic Johnson. Him Kenny Anderson and Drazen Petrovic were brilliant!
But Vince was never on a championship calibur team (besides ORL but he was past his prime at that point) nor did he have a championship calibur coach. I guess you can say the mavs when he joined but that team like him was severely aged. So just saying. As for the NJ nets comment I grew up watching that team. Vince and that NJ nets team needed a big man. That was their Achilles heel. They had a decent bench but they never had a big man.

Vince Carter played with no allstars on the Toronto Raptors and when he finally got some help with Jalen Rose they trashed him and traded him. The Raptors have always also failed small forwards, like they have no ideas how to use them and that is why it took until 2018 to have small forwards doing anything because they started playing position-less ball. He developed too many bad habits, and this is why Mcgrady wanted to leave too because they didn't know how to use small forwards properly. Any small forward for the raptors since their invention has not done well. Not James Johnson, not Mcgrady, not Terrance Ross, or any other small forward and this is because for some reason they want their small forwards (until this year 2018) to stand in the corner 90% of the time and shoot threes. This is what also made it hard for VC to be aggressive (which was a big complaint not only to him but virtually every small forward the raptors have ever had) and they expect him and all these small forwards to be aggressive when its the Raptors' coaching staffs fault. And yes I know there have been many different coaches since VC but please just look at their games past and present and you will see I am right, that the style of play for small forward position is completely the same. When they switched VC at times with Mo Pete position wise the same thing happened to him, always in the corner shooting 3s. And like I said no talent. I mean the best players besides VC was Mo Pete and Antonio Davis....really....
Exactly..... so with out injury / sudden decline what could he have done? You mean to tell me as young as Dwight was when he left Orlando that that was all he could do? He just had a 30/30 game. The man was a 3x's DPoY. And now he's on a team that's just happy to make the playoffs.

I don't know if he's the biggest underachiever, he did have some injuries, but then again, he's hung around 20 years.18-5-3 isn't spectacular but it's not too bad either. Could he have had a better, shorter career? Maybe. He should probably retired when he left Dallas in 14. The last four or five years have been pretty pointless other than he loves to play and he got paid handsomely. He'll still go to the Hall I'm sure. He's not a 50 greatest by any means, maybe not even 75 greatest? Tough to say. His runs in Toronto and even NJ were good but not great. Orlando and Dallas were ok to have happened but even by the time he got to the Magic, he was a shell of his former self. Also in his defense, he played in a pretty solid era. Duncan, KG, Dirk, Lebron, Kobe, Shaq, Nash, AI, etc were all great and had better careers.

before injury he was 1/2 man 1/2 amazing. after injury hes just that guy that USE to do crazy dunks and sometimes able to create some flashback moments. as a role player, hes alrite... but to me i always see him as an 'entertainer' rather than a competitor. dunking, boosting team morale, and hyping the stadium up was his thing.
I agree he vastly underachieved. If you really followed Vince you know he had all the abilities and talent to be better than Kobe. Injuries didn't really derail him except for maybe the 02-03-04 years. He simply never had that heart or killer instinct. If he had the same mindset as Kobe he'd kill Kobe on everything. But he didnt. His legacy should've been far more prolific. Although I'll say Toronto didn't do shit for him and coasted on his popularity. I'm a huge VC fan since he came into the league and he really disappointed me throughout childhood man. PS: Sam Mitchell hated Vince and he didn't run the offense through Vince it was through bosh and the "team". Sam was a asshat.

Killer instinct wasn't the problem, Vince had that in spades. He just didn't have Kobe's work ethic. Kobe was determined to improve his game EVERY year and Vince didn't have that kind of dedication.
Vince has an insane work ethic, that's how he's still playing and is more athletic than 50% of the league at 41. His flaw was his niceness. He didn't want to be a ballhog, didn't want to step on toes when he got to a new team, and was too willing to slide into complimentary roles when he was still the best scorer on his team (Orlando)

Vince was a superstar, but I've been saying this about melo and Vince for years. They play that way to prolong their career. When Vince sees that he is not on a championship team he pulls back his aggressiveness and plays in cruise control. This is why his defense was always lacking because, as oppose to offense, defense takes a lot of motivation and energy. We can see that Vince carters technique has worked. VyXious 2711 nets had jkidd, kenyon (overrated), and richard jefferson, yeah that’s a pretty good team. he still carried them to the playoffs without kids and jefferson. magic had young dwight (not even the rookie of the year in 04-05), everyone on that mavs team was past their primes by 10 years, can’t even try to say those teams carried him, and i threw up when i saw grizzlies. marc gasol and mike conley? tony allen? vince was late 30s when he got to memphis too, wasn’t gonna produce much, no one does in their late 30s. he proved time and time again that he could play at a high level without stars. i noticed how you didn’t include the raptors, when he had t-mac for a season and his best teammate was antonio davis.
VyXious 2711 The Nets only had Jason Kidd and RIchard Jefferson, they never had any inside presence whatsoever and no bench. The Mavs had an aging and often injured Dirk, and their best player was Monta Ellis 🙄. The Grizzlies were also a very old team who were constantly matched up against the Warriors and Spurs in the first round each year. Carter was also past his prime during his tenure with both the Mavs and Grizzlies. The Magic were a very good team but Vince only had one year with them and it didn’t work too well (partially because Howard and Vince both played terrible).
Shawn Kemp, Eric Snow never had Kidd's passing or rebounding ability at any point. Even though he can't shoot, he did adjust his game later and became a deadly 3 point shooter if you leave him open.

simple the rapters were already mediocre as you can see by the fact kobe put up 81 on them he was mostly hurt for them anyways so his value wasnt great anyway hence the sam mitchell fight nets window was closed he was there last piece they had from there championship chasing and after they traded him both teams went to a rebuild neither team matters in the FA market if you want ny got to the knicks and no one likes paying double taxes for toronto and the usa so they lose a lot of appeal that way and ny the way one series does not make him the superstar he was portrayed to be he was basically a super rudy gay a guy who looked the part but never really took that leap to the heights many thought he should have

I would agree with you in this video. Vince Carter to me was as close to being a Michael Jordan type of player as there is, he could dunk he could create his own shot off the dribble slash to the basket he was a better 3-point shooter than Jordan. I was so odd how Vince Carter's career started going downhill around like 2005 and be became a good role player.
