/ thecriminalhistorian Image, Success and Legacy, these are the main motivators for tonight’s subject. We will take a look at the life of a man whose ambitions and aspirations took him to the top of the criminal heap in San Andreas during the 1990s and whose manipulative persistence as a pusher, a player and a money maker were practically unmatched. We will examine a man who lied, killed and smoked his way to the most powerful and notorious narcotics distributor on the west coast and the many acts of treachery and moral depravity which fascinated his rise and subsequent fall. A man whose dreams may have been too big for his sizeable britches and whose actions nearly brought a city on the brink of chaos to its knees; Melvin “Big Smoke” Harris.

In retrospect, I feel silly for not seeing the betrayal coming during my first playthrough of San Andreas. 1. Smoke ate all of our chicken during a drive by instead of shooting at Ballas. 2. He felt comfortable buying drugs in Vagos territory. 3. What gangsta in the hood is having meetings with Russians??? 4. He bought a house in Ballas territory with mysterious money from his aunt. 5. Tenpenny and Pulaski are regularly seen in his house.

@@gd24playz32 Yeah, once I saw "The Introduction", it made sense why Smoke was in the Johnson house. He was waiting to ambush and kill Sweet (when he got back from the funeral). But he wasn't expecting CJ to show up. That forced him to change his plans.

Big Smoke outsmarted Sweet. Sweet was too into the hood and failed to see the signs. Big Smoke had history with Sweet and knows how Sweet things. He played Sweet. Well played. Big Smoke didn't expected CJ to survive and build his own empire and connections.

@@AH-is5yg I’m not sure about the Tenpenny part cuz if you think about it, no one has shown the capacity to even be close to CJ. He doesn’t train people and at the most part I don’t think he would’ve found someone to handle the mounting cases coming up against him like CJ did so eloquently. I do say that the Grove would’ve fell and that Sweet would’ve been targeted again and Salvatore would’ve definitely killed Ken. Kent Paul and Maccer would’ve died in the desert. Zero would’ve closed up shop and lost to Berkeley. CJ is the strongest wild card of the series. I will say that he isn’t the brightest but has the drive to do extraordinary things.

If you download a mod called Story Mode 2.0(basically restores most cut content), Wrong Side of the Tracks will have an objective to pick up a package and CJ will constantly ask Smoke what is in there and Smoke will always avoid answering

That's what I always felt. Smoke was waiting to ambush Sweet and finish what Tenpenny told him to do. But seeing CJ shocked him and forced him to change his plan.

@@kidcuddy6 sure, but Smoke would have the somewhat plausible story that he mistook Sweet for a burglar. Also If CJ hadn't come back who would be in a position to question him? Ryder was in on it and those two would be left in charge of what was left of their portion of the Grove street gang

What's important about Big Smoke's betrayal is he didn't do it by his own volition. He was confronted then caught up in the opportunity to gain riches. If Tenpenny never took to exploit Smoke, maybe he would've stayed loyal to the gang.

I think all the clues that Big Smoke betrays you were INTENDED to be overlooked the first time around, and embarrassingly obvious the next go round! Maybe Rockstar figured that alot, if not most of the people playing the game at the time of release were teens and weren't mentally wired to pay that close attention to the story that early in the game and more focused on the gameplay. Just my thinking.

I have that same feeling. Smoke is easily dismissed as the comedic relief character when you first meet him so all his crazy missions and antics seemed somewhat normal until his betrayal is revealed then you realize he’s a lot more calculating than you’d expect

Smoke should have sold drugs on the side, nothing more. And if he was caught he could have said that he acted in the genuine interest of the GSF. This interest being money which would boost the Groves' position. Because he was blackmailed by Tenpenny to kill Sweet, he was at a tough spot, but Tenpenny's opportunities proved that Smoke had devious desires, and cared far more about himself than his peers. There's even a chance that if he betrayed Tenpenny Sweet would have forgave him, but like I said, money, power and all tempted Smoke far more. He craved those things, these concepts because they ideally boosted his image, and with the Grove Street Families, this job would have been harder, especially without involving crack cocaine. Smoke sought the easy way to success, the easy way to boost his self-image, and by extension, building a massive legacy in Los Santos' criminal underworld.

Smoke wasn't in the Ballas. There were members of the families that were moving drugs. When CJ is task intercept the courier going to San Fierro you can see Grove members in the car
