17th and 18th c menswear is also a great way to demonstrate to modern fools that ideas about gender presentation, eg what clothing is "male" or "female", is entirely subject to the era and region in which the question is being viewed.

The 18th Century one was hilarious! "Women are spending too much money buying new dresses for no reason!" But also "I just saw a woman wear the same dress to ride a horse as she wore to visit a friend last week! How dare she not have a different dress for every single little activity!" It's almost like men writing about women's clothing are just outraged that women aren't their own personal dolls.

@blue7284
@blue7284 Год назад
@Hunprincess Hi, I think you misunderstood the point of the comment, since, as you explained: it's beyond your personal fashion expression, and experience - or lack of it - with male criticism. You admitted yourself the reason for nobody criticism how you dress is being modest while still wearing what is considered feminine. The point is: Not everyone have an equal or similar taste to yours, just like you enjoy modest clothes and skirts,women who have a broader range of fashion tastes, or are in polar opposites of this "middle ground" don't have to conform to what appeals to man's tastes and exigencies in your form of dressing, presenting or expression. If the middle ground was far away from what your personal style is found, would you change completely to keep the neutral/favorable male opinions? Or should you be authentic to yourself but have to hear unsolicited remarks? What OP is implying is how absurd is to have to conform to such a narrow point in a spectrum where anywhere closer to the extremes is ridiculed. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but some people feel far to entitled to judge whatever is not on their vision of what should be acceptable. And when men are discussing like this about women - in general, but in this case clothing - as if they should cater to their tastes, It's not only very pretentious and rude, but ridiculous to be so sensitive and ignorant to nothing that isn't their standard. * You deleted your comment, and I imagine someone else reading this now would be lost; but im not deleting in hopes this came across as an understandable explanation, excuse my bad English, and have a nice day. *

This was in 1918 after the US was maneuvered into WWI by our devious and self righteous Democrat President Woodrow Wilson. It actually took the writer courage to disparage the German submarine threat. My own great grandfather; a US citizen who emigrated from Germany as a young teenager to escape persecution for being a Roman Catholic, married an Irish Catholic girl and they both became US citizens, whose sons were serving in the American Armed Forces, was arrested, interned beiefly and had his business seized for being a German American, a Republican and a Catholic. Give the writer a break and consider the dangerous conditions of the time. This might be considered a subtle jab at the government, where the harridan Mrs. Edith Gault Wilson was soon to run things after Woodrow was downed by a massive stroke the Press covered up, due to a temper tantrum in Denver over the voters rejecting him.

I'll never forget the day back in college when a friend of a friend told me to smile as I passed him. I casually responded, "Don't tell me what to do," and kept walking. My friend later told me her friend was offended. At the time I wanted to know who asked if he was offended, or where he came off being offended when he was the one telling people to smile. Today, however, I wish I'd just told her: "Good." Like what you see, or don't, gentlemen. But don't presume you have any right to demand we change what you see to suit your tastes.

@emmabennett7699 Год назад
@@myblacklab7 surely yes. But also you have to remember that even if it was less common, big bugs and muscular women were also considered attractive. It was a feature that I'm sure your friends liked as well. There may have been clash, but it was always a desirable feature to some people out there. And the things you are repulsed by may also be things that you were conditioned to be repulsed by. Let's say body hair, for example. Women are mammals so it is natural for them to grow body hair, and men were having sex with them unbithered by ir for most of human history. I doubt it was a thing that even crossed their minds as "this is unattractive". But in this day in age we don't see body hair because it's considered repulsive. And because we don't see it we get shocked at the rare time we do see it, and that contributes to even more repulsion.

@myblacklab7 Год назад
@@emmabennett7699 Interesting point about body hair, since it is undeniably natural. I pluck my nose hairs, and although long nose hairs are undeniably natural, I think they look gross, and I don't think that it is culture alone that makes me think they look gross. I do think shaved legs look better, but I don't understand why only women shave their legs. In general, women who have physical traits suggesting good health and ability look more attractive to most men, and women who have physical traits suggesting bad health and disability look less attractive to most men. This makes sense on an evolutionary level, and while I think culture does have some effect, I think this effect tends to be over-exaggerated by sociologists and cultural anthropologists.

I was once told my unisex XL uniform t-shirt was too "revealing" and was given an XXL version... then I was told I look too unkempt by that same manager... she was just old and bitter. It was a plain light gray shirt, but you could see where my bra straps pressed against my shoulders and back, because it was unisex and not designed for someone with DDD breasts and so was just slightly more fitted uptop. I wore a plain sports bra, so you weren't seeing the vague outline of lace or "temptation" just what could have been a tank top or camisole. The baggier shirt fit even worse, because my body didn't magically change shape to fit the wider shoulders and longer torso... I was eventually terminated without cause from the job and wasn't told until I called my boss after winter break and asked for my schedule. :/
