Him giving the coke and leaving is him showing he’s willing to play ball with Logan even if publicly he might be critical of ATN - the Vice President was too proud to make a simple gesture of fealty, but Mencken did it to show that he’s willing to play along
Exactly. When I first watched it I thought "wow, this dude Menken has no spine" but upon rewatch I realized what it actually was about was seeing if they'd understand the gesture. Shiv's choice could talk all he wants about being willing to do favors for the Roys, but Menken is smart enough to know that outwardly being opposed to Logan, yet showing that he's willing to work with him is a great storytelling action.
Is this how the president actually gets elected? The most powerful company picks the one who's the most convenient to work with as opposed to the people deciding? (I know nothing about politics, trying to learn something)
When I was in high school (8 years ago) school textbooks and teachers were still honest about climate change. They stated that scientists were heavily divided on the subject. With some saying humans had a clear impact on it, while others disagreed. Two years later, they changed the books completely. All nuance was removed and replaced by doom scenario's of our world ending because of climate change. I live in the Netherlands, my dad grew up being taught at school that we were going to be drowning within 20 years. I grew up being taught that we were going to be drowning in 10 years. Guess what? Nothing happened so far. The world keeps spinning. The climate changes, but not in the ways they expect. All their "predictions" have been false. They know just as little about this as you or me.
@@WhoopsieDayZ please cite the research papers that stated we would "drown" in present day... people like you emphasise 'nuance' but rarely provide adequate context or evidence yourselves. Not to mention the fact that you were in high school, where it also varies teacher to teacher, curriculum to curriculum -- the fact that both sides are considered equally does not provide criterion for the wisest character, that is proven through careful and considered observation and testing.
@@wolfie8890 Watch any news report from 2002 - 2010. And you're right, there were no research papers. Thats's my point. The news was just exaggerating. I actually went home crying one day as a kid, because the youth news reports (aimed at 6 year olds) were talking about unrealistic doom scenarios every week. Even back when my dad was young people were saying we had 10 years left. Fun fact: polar bears used to be a symbol to bring awareness to climate change. Not anymore, because there are more polar bears than ever before. Researchers are constantly wrong. New studies come along, with different outcomes and interpretations. Research is always funded by someone or something and because of that, it's often biased. Climate change is very complicated and it's still debatable how much of it is influenced by us.
@@WhoopsieDayZ Actually it's their job to know more than you or me or a bunch of people. Climate is changing things for the worse. Logan has dinosaur values. Bad values. I hope it is clear to you that Logan is extremely, extremely abusive towards not only his kids but his people. What you're doing, to me, it sounds like, is downplaying.
1:09 -- Good God. After everything so far with the fourth season prior to the finale, this smile/exchange between Logan and Kerry just hits so hard. Logan liked Kerry cause she just got it.
everyone is saying that it’s cause she knew mencken was the one, but I think it’s because she sees that they’re simply just children squabbling and he has the true power so it doesn’t even matter at the end of the day what they say to him
Regarding the smile from Kerry (Logan's Assistant, that seems quite suggestive and that's definitely what the scene and writing wants it to look like. That might be true, but maybe that's just supposed to be misleading and there's nothing actually going on (At least everybody on reddit is convinced there is) Maybe she's just like, hey Logan time for your meds, or something, but admittedly the smile doesn't exactly spell injections for me either. And it's also confusing in the first place how or why she was the only one to know about them in the first place. True she's his Assistant, but there's ha heavy suggestion that she's more important that than, in whatever way that turns out to be. But in the end I was just thinking, maybe the writers wanna troll, especially since Roman has commented now twice on it, makes it kind of feel a bit too hot.
They’re heavily hinting at an affair, which makes me think that they actually aren’t doing anything. She’s young, she’s smart, and she’s not his annoying kids.
This is what I love about the writing of Succession: it's never lazy. No ten-dollar words, no super-human eruditions, but somehow they always manage to say things in an interesting way. "Climate said I was going down. Climate said I should just step aside." A beat. "I guess I'm a climate denier."
except he's not. he can't make tough decisions, he gets run over by Mencken when the election is done, he is (like Kendall said and he proved by sending dic picks to upper management) a law suit waiting to happen and he can't negotiate (Matsson steamrolled him). mirror this situation to the real world. did backing Trump get Fox more viewers? or did it help create News Max and OAN, networks that are willing to go even extremer wich led to Fox losing viewership. also, Fox just settled a lawsuit for $ 780 mio for echoing the lies of an extremist. Roman would get ATN there too probably. calling a election early and possibly wrong might be enough for serious legal problems.
My heart would go out to Shiv if she even bothered to do any of the labor associated with board and C suite positions. Complained and wouldn’t sit on the audit committee, refused to attend meetings regarding the day-to-day operations. It’s rough because I loath all of the characters so much and I really wanted to like her but seriously it’s rough.
That's Shiv's problem in a nut shell. Wants all the rewards but unwilling to take the risks. Wants all the privileges but unwilling to take the responsibility that comes with them. Wants respect without doing anything to earn it.
She was also a real bitch to Gerri most of the time. Her feigned _concern_ for her after the Roman Dick Pick fiasco comes to light and Gerri's reaction to her really showed how much Shiv lacks the personal skill to play the game.
@@aikonoklas Actually I wouldn’t say it was too late. Yeah she did some work for him but the thing he needed her most essentially for, she blew up in his face. She has the best track record out of all the characters being used by Logan to get out while she’s still ahead.
Ironically it could be Connor who comes out both politically and financially unscathed since he's so far out of the family business. Every other sibling has their fingerprints in ATN/Waystar's paper trail of litigious land mines.
Logan is practically going to be facing an attack on all fronts as far as his children are concerned. I'm betting Connor is going to be campaigning, almost out of spite at this point. Then, Shiv, Kendall, and Roman on the business end of things are going to be coming full force.
Actually Murdoch is picking Fox to back Desantis. Murdoch is also picking CNN to back Trump. It doesn't matter to him as long as all the right wingers are glued to one of his media outlets. 🤣 He personally does not want Trump which is why he dumped Trump on CNN. And republicans are already conditioned to hate CNN.
I watched some great series so far. Breaking Bad, The Wire, Better Caul Saul, The Sopranos. But I never thought I would be able to watch a whole series multiple times in a short period of time unless it’s something like a sitcom that can run in the background. It’s just written so well, with so many details and little hints that it’s a joy watching it over and over again. It’s by far my favorite show ever.
Mencken is obviously supposed to be a Trump/alt-right parallel but there is no way he’d pull off a Trump-esque upset without the branding that came from his business and TV show. He’s more like Jordan Peterson if he had Tucker Carlson’s ideas.
What are u nuts or stupid, can't u just see that Trump is like the only guy since i don't know when.. Who can afford to finance his own campaign, and hence the least crooked... Almost all the left, middle class, presidents are vetted by people with money to do thier biddings
I think in Trump’s case, being an orange buffoon with awful hair and an anus for a mouth works in his favour. Shitty people look at him and think “im better that this guy but hes more successful… whats his secret??” Which adds to his intrigue. Mencken is handsome, which would alienate him from a portion of Trump’s base. Same with Ravenhead, for that matter.
The first 26 seconds of this clip would have made a great classic TV commercial for Coca-Cola in the '90s. If the ad agencies that were doing ads for Cola back in that decade thought of this, it would have been genius.
@@BoogieDownProduction wOW, an INSULT😂😂 ! Where I come from, uppity women like you are given beat-downs in retribution for that kind of attitude in public. You will observe that. Besides, you shouldn't even be allowed to argue on the internet as you are ruining the debate by insulting me out of nowhere, while also being wrong and confused in your interactions with other users. Your other answer doesn't make more sense either, and leads me to think that you didn't even watch the show, because Shiv's voice is literally the least important one of all. Her whole arc is built around her father trying to keep her busy with pretend work so that she doesn't bother people actually working at Waystar. This is the correct interpretation. Another explanation for your confused (and factually incorrect) interpretation could simply be that you root for the woman of the show because that is what women do.
@@BoogieDownProductionlmao the only people who use the word incels are clowns with no argument. Retard just came up with the most basic ass Reddit insult 😂
@@ericstoppels8221 Ik these liberals are actually so dramatic. You don’t see right wing people having ptsd when Biden was elected. They need to grow up
Absolutely not. Logan doesnt think about his kids much, much less feels emotions like proud. It was a look of intoxication of power. His mistress/GF is turned on by the power they hold
Hahaha, what an interesting observation. Roman's "pssssssssss" definitely sounded like the steam engines you constantly hear in the background of Star Wars movies.
Love how they shot Shiv moaning in the background that her political opinion counted for more, as if she is just an afterthought and once again irrelevant in her father's eyes next to Roman.
Funny because I am on the complete opposite side of that position. I think Roman has really progressed. He’s thinking about what’s best for the company and has learned a lot from Logan. while Shiv has constantly made decisions out of her own personal interests and thinks she’s outsmarted everyone and no one notices her plays. What makes me the most annoyed is how she has been begging for praise and has temper tantrums when she doesn’t get it
amazingabby25 yeah Kendall has really disappointed me this season, I was hoping that after the season 2 finale we would see Kendall grow into a more ruthless and independent business man that would be an actual threat to Logan, but nope he’s more pathetic than ever before
Such a great scene, true to the characters. Shiv thinks she’s so clever and Realpolitik, but Logan and (here at least) Roman understand how ATN and politics really work.
Wdym, shiv was right in the end. Mencken fucked the country as soon as he was in office. I interpreted this scene as just another example of logan pretending like he cares for shiv the most, while simultaneously overlooking her in place of her older brothers.
@@cgrr8090 No but that political wing did everything they could to undermine science. You know this wasnt that long ago? Better wait longer before you try to rewrite history.
half of me wants this show to end super dark, and the other half wants this show to end super cheesy, like all coming together as a family, I mean Logan probably wouldn't be apart of it, but I think you believe there is a heart in the family with the kids they could arguably do both, that would be pretty trippy, like if it was politically and socially dark but personally and sentimentally satisfying for the family, that would be so unnerved and bitter sweet, because that's television, but that's also how the wealthy see themselves
As the final season and episode confirmed, Shiv's opinions is not worth much among the men with power except for that one vote that destroyed her older brother, Ken.
People dont even realize that this truly is how a candidate is picked by the GOP.... The leader of the conservative media does it. In reality that would be Rupert Murdoch.
Look how the democrats did Bernie Sanders. I would say that’s way worse. He was leading most of the primary but conceded after his party said they don’t want him to go against Trump
"they hate him..." which just translates to: "I hate him".... what a bizzarly familiar tactic this is, i.e., however "I" feel (good or bad about a topic) is an accurate representation of reality ..
I've never liked Shiv's character (I'm sure that's part of the goal) but JESUS CHRIST, watching her whinge while Roman makes a decent argument for his choice while she whines and shouts "my opinion matters more" makes me want to throw a brick at her.
She is the embodiment of the entitled petulant child. Marsha described her perfectly on the stairs at the wedding. "His chief of staff.."? My opinion counts for more?? Why Shiv.. F her
The entire show is fantasy. it's the kind of thing that writes itself when middle class people start imagining the lives of the ultra rich and powerful. It's stupid, but seems smart on the surface. Someone recommended it to me very strongly. I regret getting sucked into it.
Not directly no but the show was trying to encompass all the back room political dealings with RNC heads, major donors and of course the obvious parallel of the major news outlets head
The "I guess I'm a climate denier" line just didn't work for me. It's such a corny line and it's treated so seriously with the music and everything. Felt like some cringe scene you'd see on Billions.
Disagree, it fit with the context of the scene and Logan’s character since he is extremely prideful. He ignores the climate around him because he’s always believed that he makes the climate himself (business/society- wise)
@@shantyclips6358 What... The world can never be perfect so therefore fascism is the answer? Fascism is literally a utopia, according to fascists. They want a perfect society where everyone who doesn't agree with their views or look a certain way are exterminated. You're wrong about the show anyway. The people who made Succession are progressives. Adam McKay (producer) directed "Don't Look Up", a movie about how climate change isn't taken seriously enough and "Vice", a movie about how Dick Chaney is a monster.
@@shantyclips6358 world isn’t fair but it can be made fairer. People like Mencken are not hungry for change they just want to feast on culture wars and enrich themselves. If u think Mencken is epic u need to read a few books and less Shapiro spiel
