In this video, we’re going to take a look at what causes cravings during different phases of your menstrual cycle. Food cravings often signify that you are deficient in a particular vitamin or mineral.
Cravings during ovulation are often caused by high estrogen or other issues with estrogen. Consuming cruciferous vegetables and sea kelp can help balance estrogen if you're dealing with a hormonal imbalance.
Most women experience PMS cravings, or food cravings that occur just before their period. If you have PMS, you might also experience mood issues, irritability, and depression.
If you’re experiencing premenstrual cravings, B vitamins, vitamin C, and vitamin D can help. Nutritional yeast is one of the best natural sources of B vitamins, and you can increase vitamin D by going out into the sun. Look for natural food-based sources of vitamin C-avoid synthetic forms like ascorbic acid. Sauerkraut is an excellent source of vitamin C and is also good for digestion.
Period cravings that occur during menstruation can be remedied by calcium and magnesium. Calcium orotate can greatly reduce period cravings as well as cramps.
Immediately following your menstrual cycle, your cravings signify your need for more iron. Grass-fed red meat is one of the best sources. Kale and spinach also provide a plant source of iron.
If you’ve gone through menopause, you may still experience cravings that could be related to your hormones. The most common deficiency after menopause is a vitamin E deficiency. Raw sunflower seeds, almonds, and leafy greens all provide a good amount of vitamin E. Boron can also help raise estrogen levels naturally.

My cramps have deminished greatly since going keto. I drink a huge kale shake everyday before my lunch. Thank goodness for my Vitamix it really pulverizes those greens to a nice smooth consistency. A tip for everyone- I buy a ton of kale at one and wash it and chop it and put it into resealable freezer bags that way nothing goes to waste. Meal prepping makes going in keto easier.

Can you please do a video on bloating and weight gain while on menstrual cycle and keto? I know a lot of women who been on strict keto, never cheated, but when on their cycle, they bloat and gain more than 4lbs back. OMG.. Well it's about damn time someone spoke about this subject, and from a man no less, I have searched feverishly trying to find a woman who does Keto and still get cravings.. Apparently Keto is the cure for all things natural.. you're never hungry anymore.. you have an abundance of energy.. no more cravings, hell you don't even have to pay taxes anymore 🙄.. See my comment (above, or whereever YT decided to put it lol) .... after 3 months of solid good Keto, cravings came on my 3rd period and that was the end of it. Good solid Keto food = all the necessary vitamins and minerals should not = getting cravings. I'm confused.

James Comer From a man with no experience no less lol. Cravings can be due to estrogen. Despite doing keto and having an abundance of vitamins and minerals it is still possible to have imbalanced hormones. In fact, some women’s hormones get worse on low carb diets. Everyone is different. Self control is what applies to day to day cravings. Pms cravings work on another level and if you have severe imbalances they will require more than just good self control.

Yes, to all of this! My cramps are less severe since being introduced to this channel about two months ago. I attribute it to eating the leafy greens more than ever before in my life. Dr Berg’s advice to eat 7-10 cups a day is a game changer. I love Kale, always have and eat it regularly. I’ve added a lot of salad greens like arugula, spinach and romaine too. They’re potassium powerhouses!

I'm on my second menstrual cycle on IF and Keto. For the first time in about 10 years, my PMS was minimal. Before Keto/IF I would go for at least 7 days (before period) with cravings, cramping, breast tenderness, exhaustion, migraines, extreme hunger, heavy bleeding, mood swings, even depression. I was a complete mess and avoided people. This time around, I forgot my period was on its way. I worked out, stuck to my meals, went out, bought a new swimsuit, it was the complete opposite, it was bliss. My period tracker app was the one to remind me that I was a few days away from my period lol... The day before my period my nipples were sore, I had very little cramping, and I was more tired, I did cry because I had been on such an energy high and that the feeling of being tired was a reminder me how unfit and depressed I was just two months ago and I was terrified my energy would never come back ( so yes a bit emotional lol). A word of caution, my period was 4 days late, but since it was no more than 7 days late it's still considered regular, and it was very light. I am happy to report my energy is back and all is well in the world. If you are still reading this, Thank you! If you are not sure if this lifestyle change is right for you, I say DO IT! give it 3 months and after that make an informed decision. If your period is late on Keto/IF, give it time, sometimes it can take a few months for your hormones to regulate, don't be me and obsessively take pregnancy tests lol Good Luck to you all on your Amazing health Jurney!

My stomach is a blackhole during ovulation its insane. I usually eat 1200-1800 cal but during cravings i eat 4000 cal for like fee days.

Dr Berg helped me a lot. All the changes I've made in my diet tremendously worked. I have fallen in love with sauerkraut, the first one I bought was too acidic and I tossed it. The second one I love it!! My organic sea kelp capsules are beginning to stabilize my cycle. I'm surely at a happy place now. Its been 3 months since I stopped dairy, sweets, chocolates, snacks. I now drink kambucha tea, herbal teas. All my food is organic. I'm not on keto though but I do intermittent fasting. I can't live without fruit.

Happy New Year to you and the family Dr Berg. I was wondering if you had a video on birth control. Specifically the pros and cons of an IUD. What effects it has on the body while trying to lose weight on keto. I watch your videos and try to follow a keto diet and practice IF but recently made a routine visit to the GYN and he’s giving me the option of hormonal or non-hormonal. I prefer non-hormonal but not crazy on the potential side effect of heavy bleeding. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I crave 2 days before menstruation and after the actual menstruation my cravings change and my doctor told me i have iron deficiency in my period. But i never got iron supplements because my doctor said my body balances itself after ny period so it is solely because of the menstruation. Thanks so for this!

Dr. Berg I am spotting before, during and after ovulation. It seemed to stop when we 1st started keto, but now has start it again. It sounds like from your video I have low estrogen what do you recommend other than the things you mentioned in the video?

I get really tired when I start my period, normally get really sick and really tired sometimes it can last a few days then I start to feel better. Drives me nuts😅

Lots of posts mention how cramps reduce and periods are better on keto. For me it's the other ways around. I feel intense pain when I doing keto diet. Can we have a more detailed coverage of why there is this difference and how different people can continue keto thru the cycle without feeling like dying.

Hello Dr. Berg. Thank you for all your amazing information. I just have a question. My period has been coming every 20 days instead of 28 days. Its been this way for over 2 years now. I noticed that I loose a lot of weight around the time I get my period. I've had to take iron ivy's (which they give in Korea) and it helps but my gynecologists' said I should go on the pill. Anyway without going into too much detail, I tried that and it was horrible and I could not get used to it. Could you explain how you think I can get me period back to normal? I have been staying up late working on my dissertation, raising a family and working fulltime. I know this life pattern can be the cause, but I took one month of rest and still nothing changed. actually my period was very heavy and I had the worst migraine during my period (lost weight again too). Thank you!

This was FANTASTIC! Quick and to the point! You know you've done something right if I'm leaving a comment because I typically don't. It's funny how we're assigned and locked into these female bodies and we have NO IDEA the way to operate them efficiently! We need to change how we educate females about their bodies from childhood. Understanding the why and how of the female body is fascinating and divine. And here I was originally thinking "oh here we go with another MAN trying to explain to me how to work my body"! LOL Pie on My Face because this was fantastic Dr. Berg! (Sorry, I'm PMSing RIGHT NOW and EXHAUSTED because of it...so maybe I can be easily riled up at the moment.) ;) Maybe you can explain why some of us get SOOOOO tired right before our periods...because sometimes I definitely tackle it the wrong way by eating the bad stuff or drinking energy boosters. :(

I wasn't the type to take care of myself and eat healthy. Yes I was thin but I ate bad food. I did not feel well. There would be weeks that I really didn't have a vegetable. I had painful periods. So I decided to exercise and that didn't help. Then fatigue set in so I decided that the only way I will eat veggies and fruits is to do a smoothie every day. In that smoothie I included alot of Spinach, Kale, wild blueberries, rasberrys, blackberries, lemon, ginger, coconut yogurt and either almond milk or coconut water, sometimes a little raw honey. It has changed my life. I no longer have painful periods to the point that I get my period by surprise. Usually I know when its coming because of the pain and orher PMS symptoms, not anymore. Also, I was having issues digestively and I no longer have constipation and other issues. I no longer crave junk food. I crave healthy fresh food. The saying you are what you eat is soo true.

I have such a hard time fasting a few days before my period. I can't go as long without eating and I'm not having issues with cravings or snacking. I just feel extremely hungry
