(If you want to get right to the shooting, skip to 4:07 )An honest review of this Tritium Optic used by the IDF and the one shortfall I found along with the work around. I'll be shooting with it atop my Mini 14 and also going over the REM 21 by the Maco Group I have attached to it. In the end, at around $500, half the price of an Acog, is the Meprolight M21 worth the price and a quality, tough as nails, battle tested optic as advertised? I have put roughly 1,000 rounds through mine over the past year and used this optic hard in all weather conditions to give you my honest feedback.
Also, check out the unboxing video from a year ago with this link:

Meprolight makes a polarizer that threads onto the front. When you run the m21 at night with a bright flashlight it causes the same issue you demonstrated. With the polarizer you simply turn it to block all the white/ brightness out of the background and shoot with both eyes open. 99% of the time I run in this configuration and find it works just as great during the day. For $60 you’ll find it will fix all your issues and you won’t need the illuminator anymore. 👍

I bought an M21 a few years ago. Never even used it because i live in sunny southern ca, often shoot into the very bright background while sitting in the shade. The reticle is so dang dim i was disappointed.I wasnt a fan of that light you have that mounts to the side, (i bought one). Im gunna have to try this polarizer thing everyone mentions.

I haven't picked up a polarizer yet but I definitely am going to give it a try. I mean this is definitely a solid sight and it has heald up amazingly. I really do like it it's just got that one dang Achilles heel.

A fellow Mainer? I’m thinking about picking up the mepro m21. I really like the idea of not needing to rely on electronics.

Hello! Always nice to hear from someone in my neck of the woods. My M21 is still going strong. It's got that one drawback I mentioned in the video but I still say this is definitely one solid optic and certainly worth the money in my opinion. I will always have this one on my mini 14. Thanks so much for stopping by the channel.

Seriously thinking about this+ MX3 for my C308 Cetme. New subscriber, thanks for mentioning this issue. BTW the South isn't as sunny as people think.

I bet one of these would make a great site for a 308 battle rifle. Welcome to the channel my friend and thanks for watching. Good point about the South and the Sun LOL, the whole grass is greener thing I guess... take care and have an awesome day. Thanks again for stopping by.

Thinking about picking up this optic. Pretty hot and bright here in Charleston SC. One question though, why the mini 14 and not an AR platform? Mini 14 seems like more of an LPVO rifle to me. No shade, just curious! And great find on that illuminator, haven't seen anything about that mentioned in other reviews.
@TheMaineiacguy
@TheMaineiacguy Год назад
Actually I have an lpvo on my AR LOL it's a 300 Blackout. And my other AR is a 450 Bushmaster, I have a Primary Arms ACSS on that one. There's just something about the ol Mini-14 that's just rock solid to me. Great lineage coming down from the M1 Garand and the M14 as well. My mini 14 isn't one of the ranch rifles it's an original Mini-14 which ejects straight up and doesn't lend itself to anything mounted over the receiver so a scout mount is perfect for a rifle like that. I definitely recommend the sight, it's a solid optic.

I'm not a fan of the Ruger Mini 14. I work for a state agency and we have them as Department Issue. After a lot of use they have problems galore. When, not if, that buffer bushing breaks it becomes a single shot stove pipe nightmare.
@TheMaineiacguy
@TheMaineiacguy 10 месяцев назад
Funny you should mention that, I actually supplemented mine with a Wilson Combat 1911 bushing buffer. Smoothed things out big-time. That being said I have had a lot of experience with Duty rifles at work myself and they definitely get used hard. I've seen catastrophic failures with everything from a Colt M4 to a Beretta M9. Thanks for checking out our video and stay safe my friend.

Why don't they just etch the reticle into the glass?

Love the M21, but what’s a smaller competitor with the same tech/concept?
@TheMaineiacguy
@TheMaineiacguy Год назад
Not sure. I mean I welcome any comments from those who know different but to my knowledge Trijicon (ACOG etc.) is the only other show in town for a Tritium/ Fiber Optic combat optic and they are twice the price of the M21. So I would say perhaps the M21 IS the budget option.
@Brrgy

Hi guys there’s two main competitors for the “No battery dual illuminated” sights. The trijicon RMR dual illuminated and the SeeAll Open sight.
@someguy8446

My biggest issue with it is that in 10-12 years(or however long the tritium lasts), it's a paperweight. You can't get it recharged.
@TheMaineiacguy
@TheMaineiacguy 9 месяцев назад
Tritium has a 25 year life. It's half life is about 12 1/2 years meaning that it is half as bright as brand new in roughly 12.5 years. Definitely not for everyone but to have an optic that's always on for that many years for me personally is a pretty good piece of kit. It's tough to beat tritium handgun sights as well. Definitely, though, to each his own because you are definitely correct in that you pay a premium price for a product with a shelf life.

I saw this and I wanted to like it....but I'm seeing these for about $400 bucks! is it really worth it? vs throwing on a Sig red dot $150 with shake awake abilities to conserve battery life. Or just get an etched reticle optic.
@TheMaineiacguy
@TheMaineiacguy Год назад
I'm going to be honest with you it's really all about your personal preference and what you're going to use it for. I actually run all three of those sites that you just mentioned on different rifles. I have the Sig Romeo5 Predator on my 300 Blackout and that motac or motion activated technology that you're talking about is actually great I love that optic. I also run an etched reticle 1 to 4 power lpvo on my 450 Bushmaster and that is also a very solid choice. Honestly if I were only going to run one and I had to make the choice it wouldn't be the Meprolight M21. But with that being said it is a lot of fun to run and it gives me variety and a different feel from the other three that I already run.

This is absolutely one of my favorite rifles and I have always found it to be a very reliable platform. This would absolutely make a great all-around rifle not only solid and classic time-proven design but also just super functional. I did a video earlier more showcasing this rifle I will link it here below.
