This week I replace the lower ball joints on my W140 S-Class as a precautionary step in fixing a vibration at freeway speeds. The old joints didn’t have much play so these didn’t make much difference, but good information to put out there nonetheless.

Can't wait for the steering stabilizer video! If the steering damper doesn't fix it, perhaps you could have a bent rim or off-balance wheel, compounded by a worn damper. Bent rims are sneaky...

That should be coming next week, just need to edit it. It helped but did not fully fix the issue. I've been experimenting with tire pressures, but next mechanical step is to have the wheels rebalanced and to get a fresh alignment. I haven't ever bent a 16" wheel with the large tire sidewall, but I suppose there is a first time for everything. Thanks for watching!

@@redonKiLaus Any chance you found a way to resolve the vibration issue? I have a S500 (1995) and pretty much the same vibration at 55-69 MPH. I was thinking about replacing wheel bearings but I am not so sure. As you understand, it can be caused by so many different factors but your experience will shine some lights for me. thanks.

@@joohankim5050 It's mostly gone - part of the issue is the freeways where I live, as they are a bit "washboard-y" and induce vibration in all of my vehicles, the 140 as well as my 221 S-Class and my trucks and SUVs. However, it's greatly reduced after replacing the stabilizer, the shocks (stabilizer and shocks done at the same time), and getting an alignment and wheels balanced. A road force balance may help as well, as these are sensitive to vibration induced by balancing issues. Do your wheel bearings have play? If so, can you adjust the slack out of them? Very easy with a dial indicator with magnetic base. If they seem reasonably good they're likely not the source, IMO. Thanks for watching!

@@redonKiLaus Thanks for your input. I already replaced the steering rack damper and front shocks. New tires and road-force balanced. It vibrates around 55-65 MPH. The front bearings don't have much play however when I drive over 70, I hear some noise (I believe the noise is coming from the wheel bearings). The car has about 70,000 miles on it. Since I do not have a wheel bearing adjustment tools, I haven't tried to tighten it yet. Just in case, I might over-tighten them...^^

I cannot seem to hammer the bottom part of the ball joint out, even with a sledge. Any suggestions here?

Might be a corrosion issue - if so, Kano AeroKroil would be a good next step to try to soak the joint and taper in. Thanks for watching!

@@redonKiLaus I ended up torching the spindle mount and it popped right out after that. Absolutely no corrosion which is crazy to me. It was tricky!

It wasnt as easy as you made it out to be. In fact you left out the most dangerous part, the front sway bar link which has to be disconnected and is under pressure. Once disconnected it was a piece of cake but if the sway bar link isnt disconnected theres no way of installing the balljoint. After balljoint is installed wrestling that swaybar down into position to where you can get a nut on it is another nightmare. Please be careful doing this. If it slips it can break fingers.

From memory it wasn't a job that required sway bar disconnection - if it was I don't remember any issue with that. I do know that if you jack up only one corner of a car and disconnect the sway bar, it'll be under a lot of tension - I did mine on a low rise lift so perhaps that's the difference. Thanks for watching!
