The EQS and the Lucid Air are both targeting the luxury electric sedan driver. The EQS is the electric flagship of the well-known German manufacturer, Mercedes, while the Air comes from a lesser known electric startup, Lucid. In this video, I’ll perform a side by side comparison of the exterior, interior, tech, performance and pricing and show you how both these cars are redefining luxury for the electric vehicle era.

The lucid air looks clean, sleek and elegant. I respect Mercedes as an established car company, but I think they couldve done better in the design, and something is off with that 2 tone. Interior screens are crazy though. But those ac vents are eye sores.

They charge on electrify America. Maximum charging speed is a useless metric unless you actually have widespread and easily accessible charging which they really don't. Moreover higher voltage isn't just a great thing. It also means higher charging throughput and this leads to more heat and battery degradation too.

EQS: 400 (478 WLTP) miles of range, RWD, 0-60 in 4.3 sec, top speed 130mph, 186 miles of range in 15 min. Lucid Air: 517 (EPA) miles of range, AWD, 0-60 in 2.5 sec, top speed 217mph (9.9@145mph quarter mile) 300 miles of charge in 20 min. Lucid is superior when it comes to battery tech and performance.

@blakespringpasturemortimer9168
@blakespringpasturemortimer9168 3 года назад
@@succes885 Not sure what you mean by "real world data". The Air's 9.912 quarter mile was clocked at the Sonoma Raceway by the track's electronic timing system in full view of members of the auto press. The track speed was clocked at the Laguna Seca Raceway, again using the track's electronic timing system with the auto press present. As for the Air's 517-mile range, that came from independent tests conducted by the German firm FEV using EPA test procedures. FEV is used by many major manufacturers, including GM, for their testing during development, as FEV range ratings almost invariably square with EPA test ratings. (The EPA only tests about 20% of cars they rate, relying on manufacturer submitted testing from firms such as FEV for most cars.) Lucid also participated in a convoy range test (same time, same roads, same traffic, same speeds, same weather) with a Porsche Taycan and a Tesla Model S Long Range Raven. A "Bloomberg News" journalist went along for the ride in the Air. The Lucid bested the Tesla by 100 miles (456 miles vs. 356 miles). In another real world range test, Kim Reynolds of "Motor Trend" spent 10 hours in the backseat of a Lucid Air as it plied the highways around San Francisco at posted speed limits. At 450 miles Reynolds and the test engineers became exhausted from trying to drain the battery and turned the car over to another driver. He finally drained the battery at 490 miles. (I've corresponded with Reynolds about his experience of the back seat of this ride, and he assured me everything in the article was what he personally observed during the test.)

@@1993karsten Perfect or not, the Taycan, Model S, and Air were all running under identical conditions during the convoy range test in which Bloomberg News participated . . . and the Lucid ran 100 miles farther than the Tesla Long Range. For the range test in which Motor Trend participated, they put the car on public roads in normal traffic for over 10 hours. Those are not controlled conditions where it's easy to keep everything perfect. Thank you for your guarantee, but I'm curious, though. What form does your guarantee take? The Lucid looks stunning, but I'd give them a few years to get their feet wet as in releasing more models and gaining experience ala Tesla. Lucid is impressive, but Mercedes-Benz is much more established with a bulletproof reputation. My S-Class (W126) when I sold it in 2010 had 350K miles on it and I never had a moment of trouble from the engine or the transmission and my W123 coupe (300CD) was the best diesel I'd ever owned as it was glorious to drive. Granted, Mercedes-Benz doesn't build cars like those two platforms anymore but I'm confident that their engineering expertise and established quality will be present in the EQS so my biased nod is for the EQS as I'll give Lucid a few years to establish themselves and us with their products as did Tesla....

Both cars have their advantages and disadvantages. Although I currently drive an EQC, I orderd a Lucid Air. Driving an EQS is beyond everything: luxurious, smooth, safe and silent. But still, there are 4 reasons that spoke against it: - the overall length of 5,21m (doesn‘t fit into a standard parking lot) - no bi-directional charging in Europe (only Japan) - uncomfortable seating position at the back seats because of the battery pack below - no frunk In all, the Lucid Air has the better specs and all the future technology.

I bout 2004 Mercedes SL55 AMG in its debut year. The brake-by-wire system failed twice, the trunk gaskets leaked, a power window motor went out, the gear shift linkage broke, and one of the seat heaters failed. Except for a 1998 Corvette I owned, the four years I had the Mercedes occasioned the most service visits of any car I've ever owned. My 2015 Tesla Model S P90D, while not problem free, has required service considerably less often than the Mercedes. The most problem-free cars I've ever owned were three Audi R8's (the original V8, which I traded for a V10 coupe when it came out, and which I traded for a V10 spyder when it debuted). In the seven years I had those three cars, a failed suspension sensor at one wheel was the only problem I ever had. The guy who ran Audi's global manufacturing operations during that era is the same man who oversaw the design of the new Lucid factory and will run it. The Lucid over the EQS is a bet I'm more than willing to take.

This is an excellent review of the design elements of both cars. You are the first reviewer I've seen pick up on Lucid's subtle homage to the classic cars of yesteryear -- things such as two-tone interiors, contrasting piping on the upholstery, the aluminum roof rails . . . . Even the Air logo is reminiscent of the Bel Air logo on a 1957 Chevy. It's a wonderful marriage of tradition and modernity. I had to laugh, though, when you referred to the EQS interior as Vegas-styled. I had been calling it the Texas whorehouse look, but we're both on the same wavelength. How Mercedes went from the elegant interior of the prior-generation S Class and the gorgeous EQS Vision concept exterior and interior to this over-chromed, quilted leather, plastic faux piano lacquered mess with video arcade lighting in every nook and cranny is completely beyond me. I've had a reservation on a Lucid Air Dream Edition since 2018. Once I saw the EQS Vision, and even though I knew many elements wouldn't make it to production, I began to think that I might end up with the EQS. As soon as the interior was unveiled, my doubts began to grow. With the exterior reveal of the slab-sided profile and the busy, chrome-outlined, rice-rocket front end, the gig was up. I'm staying with the elegant, understated, Lucid. (I've now sat in Lucids in their Miami and West Palm Beach Design Studios, and I can attest that the tactile feel of its interior and the material quality are top-notch.) On the technical front, I'm perplexed why Mercedes stayed with the cheaper 400-volt architecture, which closes off several paths to greater efficiency. Lucid, Porsche, Hyundai, and other EVs are going with the higher-voltage architecture. Even Ford, which is using 400-volt architecture in the Mach-E, has admitted they did it for cost reasons, consciously giving up the advantages of higher voltage (less internal impedance, lower cooling demands across the systems, tighter motor windings, etc.). There is little mention of the fact that the Lucid has an enormous front trunk but that the EQS has a front end crammed with equipment which, unlike Lucid, Mercedes failed to miniaturize. The EQS doesn't even have a hood that opens, which is why windshield washer fluid is put in through a pop-out tray on the front fender. As for power, 516 hp ain't nothing when it comes to electric drivetrains. My 2015 Tesla P90D will blow the EQS away. Of course, Mercedes is already teasing an AMG version -- of 630 hp. Really? The Lucid Dream Edition will launch with 1,080 hp and has already turned in verified quarter-mile times of 9.912 seconds . . . and they have a tri-motor car in the works that will probably pump out around 1,500 hp. I hope Mercedes succeeds in bringing older, well-heeled, unventuresome buyers into the EV fold in order to speed the pace of EV adoption at all tiers of the market. But they really could have done so much better with this car.

@@tobias7252 The Lucid Air will not have a HUD, as its upper screen array is in the driver's line of sight. It does have sound reduction and a 21-speaker Dolby Atmos audio system (the first in the auto industry) as opposed to the EQS' 15-speaker Burmester system (9 speakers less than in the new S-Class' system due to power consumption). Lucid seats are heated and ventilated and have front seat massagers. The cabin has also been designed to take executive rear seats that will recline to 55 degrees. (Although those seats shrink the trunk space, the Air has a very large front trunk. The EQS doesn't even have a hood that opens, as the front is crammed with equipment that Mercedes was unable to pack as efficiently as Lucid did in the Air.) Those executive seats will go into production when Lucid starts manufacturing for the Asian market, but they will be available elsewhere. The Air has the largest ADAS sensor suite in the industry (32 sensors, including lidar). The Air will launch with Level 2 driving and be upgraded through software updates to Level 3 in about a year. Dr. Eugene Lee, who oversaw development of the highly-rated SuperCruise system at GM, is running the ADAS effort at Lucid. Unlike Tesla and some other manufacturers, Lucid is being very conservative in its claims about autonomous driving. However, if you peruse the detailed list of its features at Level 2 launch, it does everything that Tesla's Autopilot system does . . . and, unlike Tesla, it does not require you to keep your hands on the wheel, as it has a camera that detects the driver's eye motion. The Air's front lighting is a newly-patented micro-lens array consisting of thousands of light channels that produce the brightest and most precisely-aimed light beams in the automotive field. It also has the lowest energy consumption. It has air suspension with semi-active dampers and a longer passenger cabin than a long-wheelbase Mercedes S-Class. As for energy consumption, It has been verified at 4.5 m/kWh of efficiency, considerably better than the EQS' 3.7 m/kWh. You will hardly be feature-starved in an Air. But with the Dream Edition or Grand Touring Air you will see far more power and acceleration than in an EQS, with proven track times that are in a different class altogether from an EQS.

@MrPesto-gy2lt

A6 e-tron is different class, really. e-tron is stunningly beautiful - hope they build it like that. The EQS on the other hand is next-level Luxury & status. People seem to forget one important thing: Luxury car owners pay (and expect) authorized workshops & dealerships for service. Where will those be for Lucid? Hard to get everything right in a gimmick-laden luxury car on the first try..

@tonespeaks
@tonespeaks 3 года назад
Model S is not a Luxury Car, not in the same Ball Park. Model S is a Performance Car with some luxury. Lucid and Mercedes are true Luxury cars. To be honest Mercedes is the car to buy Lucid is a gamble and how can you have a Luxury car without Air suspension, that is a criminal omission.

@@tonespeaks I agree with your characterization of the market niches of these cars. However, this is the second reference I've seen in the past couple of days to Lucid's not having an air suspension. It has both an air suspension and semi-active dampers, as described by both "Car & Driver" and "Motor Trend" as well as Lucid sources. I'm curious as to the source of this claim that it doesn't?
@THEDRIVERDOWNLOAD
@THEDRIVERDOWNLOAD 3 года назад
@Blake Springpasture Mortimer I reached out to the media liaison at Lucid Motors, and he confirmed that the Air does NOT have an air suspension. I'm waiting to hear back on exactly what type of suspension it does have and will update here when I have official word.

The system keeps dumping the links to the Motor Trend and Car & Driver articles. Let's try again: Oops, still not working . . . . Well, you can either take my word that these articles exist, or you can search Google for them. Meanwhile, here are the quotes from the two articles: Motor Trend wrote, "The Air's ride is via an air suspension. What appears to be the front suspension's upper and lower A-arms are actually four virtual-axis links." Car & Driver wrote, "The Air will be supported by an air suspension, too, which the company says helps provide a smooth ride."
@THEDRIVERDOWNLOAD
@THEDRIVERDOWNLOAD 3 года назад
@@blakespringpasturemortimer9168 yes, I see the articles and you are absolutely right about the quotes. However, recently, when I visited the Lucid Studio, I was told that there would be no air suspension, and so I reached out a few days ago to the media liaison who confirmed that. My guess is that somewhere between the time those articles were written, and my recent communication with Lucid, Lucid must have dropped the air suspension...

Your Euro to USD has a very small gap but in reality 1 euro is $1.20974 (current) which means 160,000 Euro is $193,560.80. US made cars has more safety features than Non-US made auto. Therefore, If any European made cars shipped to US will cost even more. Providing EQS is made in the US which it will, the price gap between Lucid will still be astronomically more. $120k -$140k on EQS will fall short.

You mistake rout for route! It makes your comments misleading and slightly comical! No real comparison regarding safety is made! This would seem far more relevant than the design etc. Mercedes have revolutionary rear airbags (for forward protection) this will put them way ahead of anything else, at least for a while! Perhaps adult buyers would put this safety improvement much ahead of subjective, aesthetic impressions.
