I speak with zero enthusiasm like Ron Swanson from being tired after this job. Hence why I never used to narrate any of my videos in the past. It's hard to remain enthusiastic after such epic effort.
I actually prefer the zero enthusiasm it's the work you do that's important whenever I need advice on my car I look up your channel haha thanks for passing on all the knowledge sir
Thank you so much for this detailed video. I am looking forward to doing this on my W140 which has almost identical pump. Now I know the disassembly/assembly process. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for this video! Even rebuilt prices on these pumps are scary. I had never heard them called "Vickers" pump before and that led me to learning about the American man who invented power steering and built a wide-ranging industrial empire, Harry F. Vickers. (You can find more about him on Wikipedia and the New York Times free obituary access.)
I replaced all of my power steering hoses about six months ago, pressure and return. I got my return hose (bulk) my dealer, and they were perfect -- looked just like the factory hoses from 1989. Cloth wrapped with some kind of wide cloth tape. The only thing that looked off was that the hard tubing on the high pressure line was silver, not gold cad plated. Minor nit pick. Also on the Newco Products website as "metric black cloth wrap look hose."
Great video 👍 When installing a new H85 filter a while ago, I noticed sharp, protruding edges on the upper plate of the filter. That would cut filings off of the alloy/aluminum pump housing as the filter was pushed all the way down. All of my reserve power steering filters are now chamfered slightly to prevent that.
I have a 1993 W201 with 70,000 original miles. It has this same Vickers pump (but different part number and lower output pressure). The car's standard steering is too stiff for me. I'm trying to make the steering less effort. I've read that you can drill out this pump's output port by .5 mm to gain more flow to the gearbox and increase the assist. Do you have any thoughts on this modification? Do you think it would work?
Hi, I recently returned my C124 power steering pump and noted that this slight movement in the shaft (front to back of pump direction). Do you recall if this was the case when you repaired your pump? Thanks
I live in perth and just saw your rekit video. Exact same one on my w140 300se. Try to price kits from the USA and shipping is crazy. Dont seem to be able to find local source. Any ideas? Thanks. Greg
These seal kits i think i purchased on eBay. I frequent eBay, FCP euro, Pelican Parts and the Classic Centre. When it comes to genuine MB parts theres no point going anywhere but the classic centre, even the shipping is cheap and fast.
I'm replacing my 1993 300TE Power Steering Pump. I notice is that the tensioner tension gauge plastic arrow looks like it's missing. I checked online what it looks like and it's not there. The tensioner looks new. How do you thighten it properly now? The last mechanic probably didn't reuse the plastic gauge from the original.
Apologies for the typo's. Meant to say: I recently reconditioned by power steering pump. There is slight movement in the shaft from front to back of pump direction. Do you know if this is normal or will it create problems once the serpentine belt is replaced and the pump rotates? Thanks
Ronan Connolly i seem to recall this topic of discussion on one of the w124 groups on Facebook recently and some said it caused increased noise levels. I cant say for sure yet as my engine is still in pieces on the red project, though i did rebuild the pump on my blue/black 124 and its still dry and working fine. The shaft on my red pump probably moves in and out maybe half a mm.
I have a Mercedes 300E-1992. I want to ask about the stiffness of the steering wheel, it is connected that for a long time I have not changed the moslo, although there is no oil leak. Thank you .
I have just bought a UK 1988 300SL with the same set up. Very useful video, thanks. Do you have the torque settings for the bolts in the base of the reservoir that you used a torque wrench for.?
i just google searched the average torque specs for the bolt sizes going into aluminium and ran with that. i’m not aware of official documentation showing how to rebuild the pump etc. it probably exists but i’ve never seen it
What are torque specs for the four large bolts and the three smaller reservoir bolts? My factory shop manual doesn't discuss this project so I can't find any specs!
I'm gonna have to do this as well, on my 91' 300ce. It's leaking from the bottom some where, my friendly mechanic said it's likely coming from the pumps "gear box" does that make sense? I just changed the tensioner out too. Thx again for all your video! Dray
the o rings through out this car have broken like bakelite when bent to any extent so the leak could be coming from any one of the seals or even the front shaft seal.
@@MMWA-DAVE Ok, I've ordered the kit. What is that you are spraying on the components at the end of your installation in the red/black spray can, degreaser? Much appreciated once again! Dray
TheDieselMechanic 69 you’d have to make a judgement call on that. To weld it, it should be disassembled so the heat doesn’t damage anything else but the aluminium itself is absolutely weldable. If you have access to a second hand one i’d just get that and reseal it, fit it and call it a day.
not really, just make sure you get the correct seal kit for your particular brand pump. There are differences. Also pay attention to how the internal assembly is orientated, if you install it back to front the pump wont work and you’ll be taking it apart a second time. Easy mistake to make.
@@MMWA-DAVE the fact youve replied to a comment on a 5 year old video is a testament to the high quality of human you are. Copy that - no worries at all. I did indeed watch your other video swapping the orientation around. Made me chuckle. Youre a legend - cheers for replying and all your great content.
on mine i only cleaned the exterior before and after servicing with degreaser. I don’t want to clean off the oil film on the pump internals, unless its dirty and i have to. If its left for any period of time surface rust will start. Lint free cloth i used to keep it manageable. I cant comment on what cleaner to use internally as I didn’t need to use any.
Maxime Vaillancourt i google searched the specifications of the bolts and found a table outlining average tightening torques when screwing into aluminium. From memory i could not find official MB instructions for rebuilding the pump. I don’t recall off the top of my head what values i used.
JRT this car was practically leak free, this all started when I left it parked for 83 days over winter. These cars need to be driven or they just start having issues all over the place. My rear stabiliser bar bushings are creaking now too.
Am going through this at the moment BUT... compared to the leaks on my low pressure return hoses, those on the pump are a Sunday School Picnic! While generic hose can be pressed into use for the obvious ones, the one at the box, 124 997 63 82, presents a real problem in Aus. with supply. As it's RHD, the U.S. is out. Will be millions from Benz. Have you managed to find any for a reasonable price here? Seems to me that aftermarket would be acceptable on this, given accessibility.
Any and all the rubber hoses on the car can be remanufactured by pirtek or similar. If this is a crimped hose I would get them or equivilent to just crimp a new hose on. I will be using them for all the fuel hoses instead of being ripped off buying genuine MB.
@@MMWA-DAVE Pirtek came up trumps. $140 for the return hose from the box. Same day service. (priced at MB for $850!). Pirtek also supplied me with a metre of excellent hose for the other return lines...exactly the same as original....10mm ID...17.2 mm OD. So, the original stainless MB clamps can be reused. Again, hose available at MB by the metre, but twice the price. Bruised fingers...but no leaks.
TOONACEDRELA excellent. I heard good things about them from independent MB service centre that uses them all the time. I know now I’m gonna go there too! Cheers
Bonjour monsieur s'il vous plaît j'ai un problème avec les tiges d'air dans le moteur om606 si vous pouvez m'aider avec un diagramme ou une vidéo me montrant comment l'organiser merci
It is possible to install the internal core back to front - when this is done no pressure will be produced by the pump. I made this mistake myself on my other w124. This is assuming it was working before the reseal. if it wasnt working before a reseal is unlikley to fix a dead pump
You put a wrong steering oil there, you have to put only Dextron 3 All Mercedes are made only to use Dextron 3 in this steering pump. The color is red.
