A friend of mine did this on a m104 valve cover and after 2 years he was surprised to find bits of paint in his oil filter, when i did mine i didnt remove any oil residues or anything from inside the cover not even blast it after it arrived i just cleaned it with a water jet on the inside.Ofcourse it always depends on the quality of the materials to be safe inspect your oil filter.
What temps are you having on red ? I remember in some video you said that its running hotter then blue black but its just the way it is ?mine does the same in 40 degrees ambient temp, with an 80 degree opening thermostat and i know for sure my fan is working and now I have to tune my aux fan with an resistor
@@salehfiras943 other way around, red runs cooler than blue black. Red always sits around 80c and doesnt generally get much hotter unless its hot weather. Blue black’s temp always creeps upto 100c when coming to a stop but comes down quickly once moving again.
@@MMWA-DAVE interesting..I suspect the sensor that indicates the temp...I used the aftermarket crap and each one showed a different temp...waiting on the oem to see what happens...
@@MMWA-DAVE just got these now and the interesting part is the following in every mercedes document it showed but not specifically to m104.980 (jus t m104) the following 0 580 254 950 now the difference is the part no with 911 is (95l/h with 4 bar pressure) and the part no.950(120l/h 5 bar pressure) could this be the reson for fast wear of the pumps and maybe a slow acceleration of the engine ?
Great and useful video, thanks! You can refurbish the old knob yourself. There is Planty of really working “paints” on the market. You simply sand the leather down with relatively fine grit, use color fluid and than lacquer as finish. I have done it on steering wheel and it came out really nice😉
Unless you’re up for a big challenge like I am, it’s best to buy the nicest example you can find. I like buying the worst examples and fixing them, the most boring cars I’ve owned are the ones that don’t need any restoration 😂
Yes, they are absolutely worth restoring. I have done that very thing to several of them! With that many miles, you can at least be sure that a vast number of things have already been replaced or otherwise dealt with... maybe more than once!
@@Johnathan_Waters it will be enjoyed and probably lightly restored, but being a 300se it will never be worth anything. Once tims done with it, it will likley goto the crusher like the last one.
@@MMWA-DAVE Well, personally i couldn't really care less about resale value... more importantly does the condition have any redeeming qualities?! Eventually, there won't be very many W140s left at all remember...
I’ll be using it as a car to cruise around and enjoy where I don’t need to be going off-road (my W163 is for that), so will likely be getting my money’s worth out of it. I don’t envisage it going to the crusher but I’d say that’s more of a figure of speech, as I will be keeping it for a long time.
@@clearybeacon I see. I'm guessing you are "Tim"?? Nice to meet you! And i am very glad to hear that. They are amazing cars in my opinion. (the 163 as well!). I have 1998 CL600 and a 2000 ML55 AMG
@@MMWA-DAVEdon’t scrap!!! W140s, even 300SE ones is going up in value man!… don’t listen to those whiners who talk shit about W140s! They’re great cars!! I have 4 of them! Two of them were fully restored by me. I’m gonna keep restoring more and more
Those early clusters are notorious for parasitic draws than can destroy a battery in a few days (don't ask how I know). I recommend doing a parasitic test on the car both with and without the cluster hooked up before you fully reinstall it. There was some sort of recall or paid for warranty service at least in the US for the early displays, changing them out for digital odometer displays. I ended up changing out the early style display in my 1994 W140 for a digital one, and it was already the second one that the car had. The digital displays are pretty bullet proof.
@@jonalowe interesting. Sounds like failure to go into sleep mode after shut down. If this happens I will check it out and find the cause. They do have connection to permanent power so its very possible the ancient electronics will experience some other faults.
If it becomes too much of an issue I’ll swap in a digital one. I wonder if it’s a clock circuit fault causing the parasitic drain? I will be installing a battery isolator as well
Interesting, , I have just got my M104 powered 1990 SL back on the road, BUT after a few weeks i noticed the fans were running, temp gauge indicates 80degs, first i will change that blue sensor, but if push comes to shove it may be a pump change and i will not be looking forward to doing that particular task. Car has done 135k. best regards Cheshire UK and sometimes Sisaket Thailand.
Thank you for that video, I have questions: 1. Is there any chance to take that piece out without cracking these 3 pins you mentioned? 2. Do you know any part number for the O-ring which should be replace? 3. You mentioned metal epoxy in the comments which could also be used without taking that part out, just to seal and stop the oil leak. I have read that some people do that with oil resistant silicone, would it work to?
Man i love you, i Just destroyed the shifter trying to find the famous spring and now my car is in neutral and ready to go to car Heaven as the ezs failed due to some wáter instrussion. This video is gold! Thanks again!
@@sydneylivecamera hehe, i have become a lot more confident with the 210 quirks since making this video. I’ve been messing around with almost every part of them learning as much as I can.
Amazing i do want to ask about the engine tempreture mine sits sometimes above 90 degrees i have now bought a 80 degrees thermostat and im planing to do the resistor trick ,any other advice if u have would be amazing!
Hi MMWA ...my 1995 S124 M104 fuel leakage is coming from the top of the "differential". Can it be access in the interior of wagon at the rear where the 3rd seat is? I am willing to disassemble the whole rear interior if there is access to that particular fuel line that is leaking. thnks
@@MMWA-DAVE ah okay, makes sense if it comes with the star kit. I could only find the first 3 pages online (without the tables) Thanks for your response I will have to calculate it instead using pictures. Information on these old mercs is getting harder to find. Thanks 👍
hi, im also trying to do this but im having trouble removing the speaker covers in the rear. and i dont want to destroy them could you tell me how to do it properly thx
@@tuurdecaestecker609 I did not remove the covers from the parcel shelf - they will be brittle and they will explode. I removed the entire parcel shelf cover, its a lot more work but the only risks then are the C pillar trims breaking which can be glued back together or glued in place.
Hi mate from Melbourne I'm looking at a 1994 S320 W140, M104990 with the 722.3 trans at 121,000 klms totally genuinely immaculate. My million dollar question, in a nut shell is are they a great reliable car, engine and trans and would you personally buy one ? Cheers mate
@@SuperZane1978 1994 should not be 990 - it will have the later m104 with plastic intake manifold. With the low miles and immaculate it would definitely be something I would buy. Be aware they have the dreaded biodegradable wiring harnesses, hopefully these have been changed.
Your absolutely right sorry it's the M104994 are they great motors and reliable. Yes will look out for the dreaded wiring harness. You can have a look yourself it's active on carsales right now S320 White with 121000 klms in Eltham around the corner from me, tell me what you think many thanks Robert
In my case... I have deafinitely overpressure going on. When tank is full, I drive 10kms and when I open the cap then, about 2-3 litres (!) of fuel with a lot of pressure is going out... So I think it's just blocked and not having any air that should go in (otherwise tank will deform or fuel pump will die). I'm wondering If I can just remove the valve and connect those hoeses together (going from tank to charcoal canister). Car runs better when fuel cap is off so there is no (or little) pressure. Also no strange noises from the fuel pump. Older cars didn't have the valve. They have little ventilation on the cap. So, my though is the pressure is NOT needed and actually can do more damage that no pressure at all. It was just done because of EU/US "eco" regulations
@@dustblowboro your fuel tank will rust out if the tank is not sealed from the atmosphere with slight pressure. You are better off finding and fixing the blockage. I doubt its the valve it is probably the line to the charcoal canister or the canister itself.
@@bradjames3555 you use the 38 pin cable. plugged in at the diagnostic socket. When the appropriate W140 is chosen then you proceed to press the stethoscope button it automatically starts hhtwin. You do all tests within this hand held tester emulator.
Anyone have a recommendation for a good plug & play (to be swapped at home by a novice) replacement harness (1999 W210 sedan)? Who sells a good pair of wiring setups to replace these old crumbly ones?
@@CompaJake it is directly below the fuel tank on cars fitted with charcoal canister system. On cars without it theres just a bell shaped vent connected to a straight version of this valve.
I’m working on my car today and I don’t see the valve I checked underneath the car by the gas tank and the only thing that is the cover for the fuel pumps is it in there with the fuel pumps ?
Those earlier headlights were terrible design, that’s why they re-designed for 96-99. You should swap in later year headlight huge difference and improvement
