Mercury 3.5hp four stoke vs 3.3hp two stoke comparison.

In this video I compare a Mercury 3.5hp four stroke to a Mercury 3.3hp two stroke.
I found it very interesting and some of the results where surprising.
The four stroke weighs about 6kgs more than the two stroke which is a fair bit when the two stroke is only 12.5kgs.
As both these motors are used widely and abundantly as tender or dinghy motors, I thought this comparison video may be helpful to some.
Cheers.

Great video, short and to the point with no extra stuff to skip through! Gotta love the sound of the 2-stroke when you hit the gas lol. The 4 stroke just sounds weak and struggling and the 2 stroke just sounds happy to be on the water

I purchased a used Sears Gamefisher 3.0 HP 2 stroke, air cooled, aluminum prop boat motor back in the mid 1990's at a yard sale and it ran perfect. Here it is over two and a half decades later and i'm still using that same great running boat motor. I just purchased another one that the seller dropped in the water while it was running. When I got it home the piston was seized up. Took me a day to get it freed up and now it runs just fine.I sold my aluminum 12 foot boat and purchased a 10' Pelican Bass Raider pontoon boat which is where this motor will be attached too for many more years to come. I prefer two strokes for the reasons you mentioned. They are lighter, Stronger running, and mine is air cooled so there's no impeller to replace. Tanaka sold out years ago so this motor isn't made any longer but running and/or parts motors are still available on facebook marketplace, craigslist, and ebay. I'm always searching for good deals on this 3 hp engine, running or not.

Top video, mate. Very interesting. Also, loved the video on the workings of a two-stroke engine. Informative indeed. Even for a complete novice like myself. I’m currently tossing up between getting a 4/5hp 4-stroke or a 4/5hp 2-stroke outboard. I’m going to put the chosen motor (based on the decision made) on the transom of a kayak/boat called, Jonny Bass Boat 100. I think it’s a planing hull, but not certain as I’ve also heard someone say it’s a displacement hull. The hull on these ‘boats’ leaks water thru the pod, when outboards above 2.5hp are attached, which is why many people who attach higher horsepower motors to it end up fibreglassing the hull. Something I will do too. I’m just curious on which outboard 4/5hp (2 or 4-stroke) you’d recommend for the Jonny Boat 100? After watching your videos, your opinion and recommendations would mean a lot to my near-future decision… Kind regards, Dimitri

Hey mate, A 3.5hp will push it but it’s not enough if you are going against a head wind or something. Normally a 5.35m boat will be a long shaft transom too so check that before you buy a short shaft because a short shaft won’t work. A 25hp sounds better on a boat that big, you may get frustrated going 4kph with a 3.5hp and full throttle everywhere. Hope this helps. Cheers 🍻

For someone using the motor as a main drive motor, I would prefer the 4-stroke. But I'm looking for a kicker motor for trolling with on my 14' v-hull. The set throttle on the two stroke would make trolling far easier. Neither motor pushes fast enough at idle like I would hope for.

Did you have the 4 stroke at its lowest trim? It was certainly riding a lot less level… which will be partly based on weight, of course, but will greatly impact speed. No surprises here… thanks for the video. The real market segment impacted by the new regulations is in the 15hp size, in my opinion. You simply cannot get a portable 15hp 4-stroke that is light enough. It’s a more expensive comparison to organise though… collaborative effort might make it more viable?

@johnb9825
@johnb9825 2 года назад
Cool Video. I want to bring up the possibility / probability that the balance of your boat may have impacted the speed test. When the four stroke is running, there is considerably more weight aft of the boats CG. Then when you move the four stroke up front and put the two stroke on the back there must be a balance difference right? The drive-by comparison you did at the end of the video says it all... Just look at the difference in angles of attack as you go by.. Much more level with 3.3 2S and very steep with the 4S. THAT definitely makes a difference in speed efficiency.. A level boat goes faster. Try doing a test where the CG angles (weight distribution) is the same. All that said, Wow, that little 3.3 surely held it's own.
@25hpboatracerman
@25hpboatracerman 2 года назад
Hey mate, good thoughts for sure and definitely would have a small impact, not as much as thought though, I did try moving my body further forward with the 4 stroke on the back with no improvement. The weight difference is only 6kgs, like moving my leg forward a bit in the boat. In saying that I’m sure there is a small impact from the 6kg difference in weight being placed in a different spot. I only put the spare motor on the middle section, not right up front. I do feel like the boat was more bow up with the 4 stroke because it was less powerful and slower, the two stroke seemed to push passed that point and nearly planed, leveling the boat because of more speed. Cheers for the thoughts, that’s what it’s all about 👌 Wish I could have run the both together, that would have been interesting too.

@nerd1000ify
@nerd1000ify 2 года назад
I think a big part of the reason for the speed difference is the heavier weight of the 4 stroke. When you motored past the camera side- on the boat was clearly much better trimmed with the 3.3 on the transom, meanwhile with the 3.5 the stern was buried quite badly. Might be interesting to move your weight further forward (e.g. with a bit of poly pipe as a tiller extension) and see if the 4 stroke gets closer to the 2 stroke's speed.
@25hpboatracerman
@25hpboatracerman 2 года назад
Hey mate, Looks that way for sure but the 3.5hp 4 stroke definitely has less power which is part of the reason for the boat sitting lower at full speed. The two stroke seems to just push past that stern down plowing stage. In reality the weight difference is only 6kgs so it’s not a massive amount that will affect things too much, like moving a my leg forward a foot or something. On board the 3.3hp two stroke defiantly feels like it’s got another 0.5hp over the 4 stroke. I do like the tiller on the four stroke though, way better. Cheers 🍻
@nerd1000ify
@nerd1000ify 2 года назад
@@25hpboatracerman It's interesting that two nominally similarly powered engines have such a difference, particularly in the 'pick up' when you open the throttle. Clearly the 2T has more low end torque, and probably also a lighter flywheel. I have the 3.3 2 stroke on my Caper Cat. Flat out it pushes us at about 7 knots, but it is very thirsty for such a little motor, especially at full speed. I also dislike the pollution it emits, the constant misfires at trolling speed, and the way the leg drags in the water when we're sailing because it only lifts about 45 degrees. So I'm contemplating a 4 stroke replacement. Any advice?
@25hpboatracerman
@25hpboatracerman 2 года назад
@@nerd1000ify Hi mate, Yeah, the two stroke do use a bit of fuel hey. I get about 4 to 5km from the onboard tank on that dinghy in the video. The rough idle is because they are such a simple motor with fixed timing, they also sometimes have a bit of a flat spot from idle to speed because of that fixed timing too. The 4 stroke I tested has the exact same leg, clamp bracket and lower unit as the 2 stroke so it will only trim up the same hight with the same retainer push pin. I didn’t have the 4 stroke long enough to see how it was on fuel unfortunately. The 4 stroke would definitely have less pollution. The two I tested are actually built by Tohatsu (Mercury just put their stickers on) both good little motors. I feel your pain with the leg dragging, that’s not ideal, I wonder if there is a mod that can be done to gain a bit more trim when not using, a wedge or something? Cheers Aussie Boat Guy

I am a two stroke fan, be it boats, motorcycles, or work equipment. I have a restored 1960's 3hp two stroke lawnmower that easily cuts thicker weeds without stalling than my four stroke 6.5hp lawnmower.

True but the 4 stroke is bigger, Heavier noticeably not as fast and more complex and you will have to change the oil twice a year. But you can troll for as long as you want in the 4 stroke and you wont foul your plugs like in a 2 stroke.

This makes perfect sense since two stroke engines are more efficient than four stroke engines. They produce more power at the cost of increased emissions.

❤2strokes, Lighter, Faster, Quicker, more responsive Acceleration, can lay them down on their side in the boot, Negatives dribble a little oil into the water from the fuel, and you need to mix the oil to the petrol for engine lubrication, and governments made it nearly impossible to buy new ones.

Yeah, true. Its not that deep there though, only about 3m. Didn’t feel like I was going to drop them but if so, I would swim down and get it. I could do a video on what to do after a motor is submerged too 😂, would be embarrassing but a bit funny.

it's my understanding that 2strokes have more torque and power... so you posted the top speed of the 3.5 but failed to post the speed for the 3.3?... how much over the 11kmph was the 3.3... it looked at least 1/3+ faster than the 3.5
@wingmasterjimmy6724
@wingmasterjimmy6724 Год назад
What is the point of a small 4stroke?honestly,for what they are used for they are a re herring as far as im concerned.The only thing in their favour is no oil/petrol premix which unless your fussy doesnt really count.Then you have added weight,more expensive to buy,lack of torque etc and a nice extra complicated service burdon and dont forget to make sure its kept in upright position in your vehicle....

It seems like you forgot to trim the four stroke,from the waves I can tell,check it out
@25hpboatracerman
@25hpboatracerman 11 месяцев назад
Hi mate, Both motors were trimmed on exactly the same trim setting with the same propeller and same gear ratio lower units. The reason you are seeing more waves is because the 4 stroke is slower and the boat is running deeper in the water. All the best 👌 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
@concernedaussie1330

Two strokes fire twice as often a 4 stroke . That’s why they have more power & torque , the down side is they use a lot more fuel & they consume oil for the life of the engine. However power to weight they are just so hard to beat. Poor old 2 stroke marine engines are very handicapped compared with their higher power brethren two strokes. The exhaust expansion chambers of motorcycles are the heart of the famous two stroke power band , a high power designed engine of the same cc displacement would likely achieve 7- 12 hp .

@@NinoSpinner Ciao 👋 Non ho provato l'elica in alluminio. La mia opinione è che il due tempi sia più veloce perché ha un numero di giri più alto e ha più coppia rispetto al fuoribordo a quattro tempi di quelle dimensioni. Ho notato che con CV maggiori il quattro tempi si sente bene.
@NinoSpinner
@NinoSpinner Год назад

@25hpboatracerman
@25hpboatracerman 4 месяца назад
Hi mate, It may go better with a lower pitch prop, don’t know if top speed would change though. I really wanted to compare the two motors with the same pitch prop (which both had the same from factory) they both have the same leg and gear box with the same gear ratio so it was a fair comparison on the same boat with the same trim setting. good comments champ, I do think hole shot on the 4 stroke would be better with a lower pitch prop but it was even more apparent on board how much more power the two stroke had. all the best Aussie Boat Guy 😎

Hey mate, Good thoughts 👌 Of course same props both - 7 pitch identical plastic and both motors have the same gear ratio too, basically the same lower unit. Both motors are actually Tohatsu and are built in Japan. The fuel range totally depends on what hull you have them on. I have tested the range of the two stroke on a ten foot light aluminium boat with minimal luggage and just me onboard - about 10km range off the 1.5 liter tank. I have not range tested the 4 stroke.
