On this episode of Dirt Fishin America we go metal detecting for gold by an old abandoned mine and accidentally come across some World War I artillery shells. Thankfully they were not live! Please don’t forget to like and subscribe and remember, don’t try this at home.
Check out my specialized metal detecting package spec'd out exactly like mine! www.treasuremtndetectors.com/...

They look like 105mm howitzer shells. If you look inside and shrapnel bits you may find, you may be able to see where the lead balls had been packed in. The flat bit is where its come under pressure against the shell while detonating. The band on the bottom would have had another peice that engages the rifling. There could be a date stamped on the bottom if it cleans up.

Known as “canister shot” shot, usually lead or iron balls, in the 45 to 50 caliber range, fired from 105MM artillery rounds.

Hay Dr. I'm still on my Germany trip and got a big old German 88 round [live] Didn't get the best video of it, just way to excited to probably work the camera 👍🤪👍

Thank you Brandon for another great trip. I have a few of those big shells I found in the state just east of you, they (ones I found are from WW2) practice area. Lead balls you found are indeed the "round" from inside. I hope you go back, the timing device on the end is solid brass and REALLY COOL looking also cone shaped like you would expect. I use one I found as a door stop:) If you clean up the blunt end(and if it's in good shape) there should be a stamped flaming b*mb symbol. Great finds! Please let me know what you find out.

@@DrTones24k I don't think technically, I'm (or my family) are supposed to even have them, they put the stop to that about 20-25 years ago. I'll have mine till I'm not here anymore:)

I forgot to say that the groove on the blunt end is where the rotator band would be also. Made of copper.

That’s exciting stuff. I’ve been Metal detecting for 20 years. And I can honestly say I’ve never found one. 1 million shotgun buttons in Michigan. LOL Great fines and great fun. Your boy sure has a natural curiosity. And he enjoys the hunt!! That’s the real treasure. Thanks
