72 Seasons is the eleventh studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released on April 14, 2023, by their own label Blackened Recordings. 72 Seasons is produced by Greg Fidelman, who produced the band's previous studio album, Hardwired... to Self-Destruct (2016), and is the band's second studio album to be released through Blackened.
Background
In an interview with Australian magazine The Music's official podcast in March 2019, bassist Robert Trujillo said that Metallica had begun jamming on new material for its next studio album. "I'm excited about the next record because I believe it will also be a culmination of the two [previous] records and another journey. There's no shortage of original ideas, that's the beauty of being in this band." He estimated that the album would be released "a lot sooner than the previous two did... this time around I think we'll be able to jump on it a lot quicker and jump in the studio and start working. We've all vowed to get this one going sooner than later."[7]
In an interview with Australian magazine Mixdown the following month, guitarist Kirk Hammett said that the band had tentative plans to enter the studio after the conclusion of its WorldWired Tour in support of Hardwired... to Self-Destruct. He stated, "We're in our third year since Hardwired. Maybe we can get a bit more focus and go into the studio a bit sooner."[8] Having not contributed any writing to Hardwired... to Self-Destruct after accidentally losing his phone containing riff ideas at Copenhagen Airport in 2014,[9][10] Hammett said regarding his ideas for the new album, "I have a ton of material. I've over-compensated, so I'm ready to go anytime."[8]
In April 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, drummer Lars Ulrich said in an interview with Marc Benioff that Metallica could work on its next studio album while in quarantine.[11] Trujillo told The Vinyl Guide in June that the band was "excited about cultivating new ideas" for its new album. "We communicate every week, which is really great, so we have our connection intact [...] what we've started doing is basically just really concentrating on our home studios and being creative from our homes and navigating through ideas and building on new ideas. And that's where we're at right now". He also said that the band was working towards eventually entering a studio to record the album.[12] In November, Ulrich said in an interview with Phoebe Bridgers for Rolling Stone that the band was "three, four weeks into some pretty serious writing"[13][14] and stated that "It's the heaviest thing, the coolest [...] but all kidding aside, if it wasn't because we thought that the best record was still ahead of us, then why keep doing it?"[15][16][17] He followed up in January 2021 by saying that progress on the album had been "glacial",[18][19] while vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield said in March that "It's either touring or writing, so COVID chose for us [...] but, yeah, [we will release] a bunch of songs. We wrote quite a few songs."[20]
Title
On November 28, 2022, Hetfield commented on the album's title:
72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told 'who we are' by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is reenactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry.[21]

I have the feeling, many folks don't take the time to really get into a new record anymore. If it doesn't click after the first listening, it is 'boring' or 'meaningless'. Some of my all-time favorite songs and records took me several spins to really appreciate them. Not saying that this is the best record, but you should give it some time. There are definetely some songs that grow on you.

Metallica have the same problem as Pink Floyd: they have made so much music that is incredible that anything new would have to be utterly stunning to make me want to listen to it over some of their other work. When I have a desire to hear Metallica I’m going to reach for one of the first five records. I liked “72 Seasons” well enough the one time I heard it but I haven’t felt the need to return in the week since. I don’t feel there’s much there I didn’t get first time.

Honest truth I kind of felt that way too. Everything after St. Anger isn't terrible but it also feels nonessential. Credit where it's due, they're not farting around making Summer in Paradise, but if they wanted to just be a touring band who only played their old stuff I wouldn't mind. Also why is the Toxic Avenger clawing his way out of your chest?
@Hammerhead547
@Hammerhead547 Год назад
I've always thought that the whole fiasco behind the making of St Anger is what soured them on making new albums because of how they were forced into making an album they really didn't want to make when what they really needed was five years off to just rest and recover after spending the previous fifteen either in the studio or on the road. After something like that happens to a band it usually becomes a self fulfilling prophecy that a band will either make mew material because they don't have a choice or because they just don't care and want the money (see dave mustaine admitting in an interview that he really doesn't like making new albums anymore but does it out of obligation because he wants the money).

As someone who's favorite (while recognizing that it is far from their BEST) album is Death Magnetic, I don't hate 72 Seasons. It's not nearly their best, but it's.... fine. I think I'm at the point where I treat Metallica like Eminem. They are integral to my appreciation of their respective genres, and I won't complain if I hear new stuff from them, but you could not pay me enough to go actively listen to new stuff from them, because I'm bound to just switch it off after a few minutes. Case in point, I tried listening to this thing, and the first track sure did exist. It existed to the point where I went and seeked out other bands and artists to listen to before even finishing the song.

As a lifelong Metallica fan, this is also my thoughts on 72 Seasons: lengthy songs, long runtime, front loads all of the best and/or most interesting tracks, has strong riffs and vocal performance, but ultimately it's just more late period Metallica. It's not a horrible listen if you like Metallica, I know that I had a pleasant listen through it, but it is slightly disappointing that we're just getting more Hardwired... To Self-Destruct after the better part of a decade. It's not even like Death Magnetic, another fine late period album, was following up St. Anger after five years. It's just... There.

Somebody once said that if another song was never written, we would be fine. Music hit so hard from the 60s to the 90's that we've already got everything we need. It would be extremely hard nowadays to write a good song without sounding like something else. I'm a huge music fan and I've been a musician since the nineties. However, it's extremely hard for me to find new music that I actually like. Last music that I actually got into was from st. Paul and the broken bones. I also like Tom Misch.

For some reason I don't know why, but Metallica usually wants like, 5 to 8 minute songs, but it's kind of like they took a 3 minute song and looped it. There isn't a progression or like, distinct parts of a song that you can point out. You get to a really cool solo like chorus 3 or chorus 4, but like... Could the solo have come after chorus 2? I really wanted to like "oops my baby exploded" but could have it been a 40 minute album bar some fan decided to make an 80 minute edit?

They were clearly trying to emulate the more "raw" production sound that Iron Maiden has had on their last few albums thanks to kevin shirley just not giving a fuck anymore because he was at the twilight of his career and knew he didn't have to really try. I will say this much about it: metallica's producer at least understands that an album can have that raw sound but it has to at least sound finished and not like a leaked bootleg "nearly there" mix of an album that ended up being shelved.

Metallica was always at its best when it was doing "Unga bunga make the moshpit move" tbh. The problem with mid 90s onwards metallica is its just gentrified. The earlier albums (Kill em all to Masters and arguably Justice) where great because it was *hungry* meth raged flip out music. And then the band got rich and the band got comfortable (mid career meltdown notwithstanding). Best thing that could happen would be for them to break up for a few years and spend time playing in other thrash bands to get a reminder what it means to be a working class thrash band again, and THEN come back refreshed.

Hot take: If St. Anger didn't exist, this album would be my least favorite Metallica record. It's far from awful and has a few alright songs like the title track and You Must Burn!, but this album honestly kinda bored and even infuriated me a little bit. The best way I can describe 72 Seasons imo would be predictability. Many of the songs feel or sound alike with little deviation from the typical Metallica song structure and the album is way too long like the last few. There are definitely lots of good ideas here, but I feel like every time they introduce a new/interesting element it doesn't really go anywhere. And with most of the songs being over 5 or 6 mins, it feels like they drag on forever with the repeated riffs and predictable writing. Ironic that you praised the solos because what mainly infuriated me was most of Kirk's solos. I can't count how many times I've heard him do a "widdly widdly" part with the wah pedal on nearly every track. It really started to grate on me to the point where I started skipping songs outright. The closing track Inamorata has a few cool parts like the guitar harmonies and slower groove throughout, but mostly disappointed me with how repetitive and drab it sounded. I can say the same about many of the other tracks like as well and the fact none of them seem to have any "wow" moments that would make you want to listen to the songs again. Even the best tracks like 72 Seasons and Lux Æterna feel like they would be filler songs on one of the better Metallica albums. Maybe I'm being too critical or nitpicky, but this album ended up disappointing a lot more than it should've and I didn't have high expectations for it in the first place. Again, it's far from bad and I'll listen to 72 Seasons any day over St. Anger, but I know Metallica can do better than this, even this late in their career. I'll try and give it another listen sometime, but I don't think my opinion will change that much. :/

Honestly it all felt like one long song to me and found myself getting distracted out of the songs quite a bit. I don't find myself putting any of the songs on my personal Spotify playlists.

Two massive Thrash titans released an album on the same day, being Metallica and Overkill. By the 4th non-single track on the new Metallica, I was repeating "is it over yet" in my head. The new Overkill, on the other hand, kicks some ass and damn sure boots the new Metallica out the door.

Those two albums are such a great contrast. You have metal royalty that can phone it, has changed its sound but still manages to sound the same, and then you have a hardworking, blue-collar band that can't change. You have bloat and pretention on one hand and passion on the other.

+ 72 Seasons sounds like the worst version of Hardwired to Self-Destruct (As if they took rejected demos from "HtoSD" and made an album in 3 months, for the sake of a new tour). Why listen to this weak cliche on hardwired, if you can just listen to the same hardwired.. the answer is simple.

I thought Load and Reload (particularly Load) had some very well-written songs. Load's my favorite Metallica record tbh Also, it's funny about St. Anger, because even if the drum sound is really wonky, the actual playing is Lars at his most technical (other than Justice)
@stevenbaksh5545
@stevenbaksh5545 Год назад
I know that's the odd part that Lars's best drumming outside of AJFA can be found on that album but he just had to get his trash can and it seems that he realizes that was a bad idea there was this video of him backstage in 2013 I think of him making fun of the snare drum on St Anger
@volutedmetal8543
@volutedmetal8543 Год назад
@@stevenbaksh5545 Yep, I remember that! Though the band was asked very recently if they'd change things about their career and the band over the year if they could, and they all said no, including Lars specifically referring to the St. Anger snare iirc. The St. Anger - Live In Studio DVD (which is very easy to find on YT) has a pretty good sound with performances pretty close to the album itself, and the snare, while still ringy, actually sounds like a snare

@stevenbaksh5545 Год назад
@@volutedmetal8543 they see St Anger was necessary to fix the band just watch Some Kind of Monster documentary but that still doesn't justify it there are not so bad songs on it if you can look over the snare Frantic is a great song it sounds great live St Anger the title track The Unnamed Feeling and All Within My Hands are not bad too

I thought it was an awful album. Im glad others enjoy it. But its by far their safest, most boring, most generic album. Every song is so fucking long. Way too long. The generic production quality sounds so flat, their guitar tones are lame. Every song is just power chord over power chord. Very safe writing. Just boring. And you mention Kirk shining on this record and shreds.. the sad thing is, he hardly *at all* wrote anything for the album. Very disappointedd in this release. Cheers man. Good video

I can't believe the number of people declaring this an 8/10 album. We must be listening to different things. It's so bloated and lazy for the most part. Worst part is that they could have easily made this a much better album if they were capable of making better choices. This is the definition of what waiting for a paycheck feels like. No, they don't need to release new music. Do they want to? Hetfield probably does. Lars and Kirk are collecting that paycheck. Lackluster is a good word for it. It's a bog-standard album. The definition of a 5 or 6/10.
@alphaenemyplus8376
@alphaenemyplus8376 Год назад
Straight up agree, except that Kirk really isn't impressing me on this one either. What they did manage to muster from Hardwired is just kinda the same thing here with a bit different production. That this is the biggest metal band of all time is really hard to understand in any context 32 years after the black album came out. There are shitloads of metal bands that put out objectively better material than this regularly.

@@stevenbaksh5545 I've always found that metallica are like motley crue, iron maiden and many other bands that write stuff which they know will sound great live but it never quite translates in the studio versions either because of compression or because of the production. On their last few albums metallica has definitely sounded like like they're trying to produce a "live mix" for the studio where they have the soundboard configured the same way it would be if they were playing an 80.000 seat stadium in south america.

Screaming Suicide is straight-up offensive for just how badly they execute it. It's a serious song, but it sounds like some stupid shit a buttrock band would come up with to try to sound edgy.
