James then is a lot like James is now. Light energy, down to earth., totally relatable. I always felt that James' energy was always pretty heavy and somewhat dark during the height of the Black Album days. He later said the ego of being a rock star was getting the better of him.

The James of today seems like a completely different person.

Jason hasn't changed a bit. Watching this, well re-watching this - made me realize quite literally all the stuff he was saying about how Metallica were at the forefront of the thrash/metal movement since the beginning, and it only makes sense they would represent this genre to a mass audience by being in the first ever metal category at the Grammy's, and how people shouldn't view them gaining popularity as a negative gatekeeper thing; dude that whole bit is exactly what he'd say today if asked the same question. His respect for Metallica before he joined, during his tenure, and after his departure has NEVER wavered.

It’s funny how different James’s voice is in his younger days. Now it’s much deeper, as if he went through puberty during the 90’s, while in his 30’s. Obviously damaging his vocal cords by distorting his voice for many years contributed heavily.

Actually James and Lars is a “Metallica”. Most of their song wrote by them. And lars ask james to do by humming the riff or singing the riff and james play on guitar. A lot of hate to lars, but he’s genius.

This was the Hetfield I remember growing up...he had this aura and vibe during this timeframe it's odd to nail down, definitely cocky but serious at the same time. Reminds me of the time he was signing an autograph for some chick and randomly signing while look at her, she looks up and he nods like "meh...ok" and turns around to take another pic. lol
