@@matthiseparvier7239 I’ve only played Xenoblade 1 and just finished X yesterday, so I guess Xenoblade 1 wins that by default. I’m moving on to Xenoblade 2 and I’m hyped. Also Xenoblade X is fantastic and it’s such a tragedy that it’s stuck in the Wii U. X deserves better.
You didn't mention that the reason the Metroids were created by the Chozo in the first place was to contain the X Parasite on SR388, and by wiping the Metroids out on SR388, Samus and the Galactic Federation accidentally allowed the parasite to once again become a threat. You also didn't mention the unintended Ridley clone in "Other M," whose remains were brought to the research ship in "Fusion" (and thus available to be reanimated by X), thus establishing at least one link between the 2 facilities to the same illegal splinter group in the Galactic Federation.
Also the fact that the reason Samus can use Chozo items is due to the fact that the Chozo genetically spliced her own DNA with Chozo DNA. This is also part of the reason why she's strong beyond regular human levels and can do things like morph ball. And might be part of the reason why Research bots made by the federation are intend on just killing her, she's a unique marvel of technology far beyond what humanity at that point can do, and part of her DNA might be key to even more devastating weapons or armor.
@@johnnyp1986 the metroid series is well known for backtracking. Specifically to get items you misssed or couldn't get earlier because you didn't have the right gear. So, that's what he means by backtracking the recap....which honestly would have been good for the person who made this video because he missed some information

One of my biggest gaming surprises was when the baby Metroid saved Samus at the end of Super Metroid. I will never forget the pure shock I felt and how low my jaw was dropped.
when you see the events leading up to it, ie the baby imprinting itself on samus as a mother, it makes sense why the baby saved samus, saved its mother
well..yeah the game is strongly based on Alien with Sigourney Weaver. she IS trying to eradicate all metroids, parasites, and all possible threatening forces to the galaxy.
Thanks for the recap, though it would have been nice to explain the relationship between Metroids and the X-parasite, it is very crucial to the allegory of disrupting the ecosystem of apex predator, the entire backbone of the Metroid universe.
@@shayminup7 the x parasites are native to sr388 they gain the intelligence of whatever they possess. They were discovered by the chozo who decided to wipe them out by creating the metroids. However the metroids went rogue afterwards and killed everyone. There were survivors but they were then killed by an evil chozo named grey voice . Grey voice is a character from the metroid manga and you see him in the metroid dread trailer

@@shayminup7 Sure thing. Basically the X Parasites were discovered by the Chozo on SR388 and saw them as unchecked evil because they were parasites that could infect any living being. The Chozo then created Metroids to fight the X-parasites to restore balance. Eventually the Metroids would become seen by the Galactic Federation as the biggest threat in the universe and must be eradicated which just perpetuates the cycle. Samus is a bounty hunter but she is being used as a genocide machine for creatures that were created by the race that raised her, and after being infected by the X-parasite finds that the very things that she's been killing gave her a vaccine to fight off the X-parasite infection and ultimately the X-parasites themselves. This is poetic because now Samus and the Metroids have a common enemy. The theme of Metroid has always asked "Who is the actual predator?". And that's what I find most interesting about it!
The series was originally a nod to the Alien movies and took on its own life from there. This video skipped the Prime trilogy which has a lot of cool lore in its own right too.
You probably never played one because Nintendo never put any effort into promoting the older Metroid games. Even “Samus Returns” got very little promotion. I think “Dread” is the first one they’re really putting effort into promoting. And it’s working, because it’s currently Nintendo’s #1 game right now and it’s not even out yet. And it’s attracting both hardcore fans of Metroid *and* people who’ve never played a Metroid game.
@@templeofthesmilingjackalop9860 It technically has been still all the way to Fusion. Samus Returns is a nod to Ripley returns in the sequel when she's been in stasis for 57 years. Super Metroid's ending is a nod to Aliens 3 where she's saved by the embryo. Fusion is a nod to Ressurection as Samus' DNA is fused with the Metroid just as Ripley's DNA is fused with Alien DNA.
Do yourself a favor and just dont play other M. I mean unless you wanna see samus acting like a Disney princess right down to crying and getting rescued by a man every two seconds

I bought that game for $30 about a month before Drea was announced and am so glad I did now. Prices are high and it was a great game. One of my favorites on the 3DS. And the baby was cool.
@@aureumursa1833 Wow, you’re so lucky you got it when you did. Prices of *all* Metroid games have gone crazy high. Samus Returns is selling for around $55 now. But I just found some Metroid Fusion GBA games-preowned-sold for $75 and $90, just for the cartridge alone, no box. Metroid Fusion games with original box and manual have sold for $350!! Luckily I bought all four when they first came out, and never sold or traded them in. But I’m kicking myself so hard right now for not pre-ordering the *Special Edition* of Metroid Dread when I had the chance. I saw it on Amazon before it sold out, but I couldn’t decide whether to get the regular version or spend $20 more for the Special Edition. So I put both in my shopping cart and left them there to think about it. Stupid move on my part. The Special Edition literally sold out within minutes, and by the time I went back to get it, it was too late. 🤦🏻♀️

As a person who pre-ordered the special edition of Dread because the E3 Trailer looked cool and knew nothing else about Metroid, this was helpful. I for once found a guide where it's not hard to keep track of all the names and stuff. So excited for dread and to become a fan of Metroid.
Go for the games then. They're considered as masterpieces for their respective generations especially Super Metroid and Metroid Prime 1. Both remain one of the best games ever created in the gaming history. If you need some help for the games' ordre, reply back.

I would recommend to play the remakes instead of the originals, but it's your choice. This is the order: 1. Metroid (NES)/Metroid Zero Mission (GBA) *Metroid Prime trilogy (GC/Wii) 2. I really hope we get a collection of the old games someday. At the very least, we need a way to play Metroid Fusion without having to dig out a GBA or find a 3DS that has the Ambassador games.
Actually, with Samus Returns, there ARE connections with the Prime Trilogy: Protheus Ridley, that has his machanical armor from Meta/Omega Ridley, and has light purple skin due to the Phazon which the Metroid drains, turning him dry purple.
For newcomers, that might be too much lore all at once. Best to focus on the non-prime portion of the game then go back to the Prime aspect of things when 4 is announced.

The tone shift away from "armored mercenary lady with lazer arm fights literal space pirate dinosaurs" into something more serious and dramatic is strange to say the least.
Thank you so much for this video, I couldn't for the life of me remember why The Federation hated Samus; and this totally reminded me of what all went down. Metroid Dread is going to be one HELL of a game I tell you. I for one can not wait, so glad it's releasing this year.
I am still so happy that Metroid is getting some love! Back in my day (listen to me) Mario, Link, and Samus were the holy Trinity when it came to Nintendo characters, but due to poor sales, Samus has sadly been left behind. Hopefully, this new game will at least pull her from out of obscurity, since most people today only know her from Smash Bros.

Unfortunately, the Metroid series is not very popular in Japan. This is why Nintendo doesn’t put as much effort into it like its other franchises. Super Metroid was a wild success in the west, but it flopped in Japan. This combined with them being unable to make a Metroid game for the N64 made them ask Retro Studios, an American company to develop a new Metroid game.
Excellent coverage of the series. It's wild how long it's been since IV (Fusion). But V (Dread) is not far away any more. Hopefully Nintendo brings the GB, & GBA games, + DS titles to Switch soon
I wish. But that’ll never happen. My dream would be for them to *remake* the 1st and 3rd Metroid games (Zero Mission + Super Metroid), and maybe the 4th (Fusion) and then bundle *all five* together (or at least 1 ~ 4) into a single collection. I’m torn on whether I’d want Metroid Fusion to be remade, because I like that one just “as is”. But with all the others remade (or reimagined), I guess leaving Fusion “old-school” within a collection of remakes would probably be a bit weird. So either way, I don’t care. As long as I could have all 5 Metroid games on my Switch. I’m playing Super Metroid right now (on Switch Online) and I don’t mind the old school graphics. But it’s a little annoying how FLOATY Samus’ jumps are. For that reason alone I’d want Super Metroid remade. Metroid Fusion isn’t floaty at all, so I wouldn’t mind a direct port to the Switch. But it probably should be remade just for continuity sake.

Thanks to metroid dread announcement, I have know interest on this serie I have never played and currently I watch some videos like this one and playing metroid and super metroid, I'm starting to like this atmosphere you have similar to the alien serie film

@@simw0981 Fusion is the most narrative and the most accessible along side zero mission. Play both they are good introduction to the series (Lol don't even know how you found Super being narrative it had 0 indications despite being intuitive and you had to explore everything in order to progress) . The world of the Prime series is very attractive, very coloured and beautiful and BIG. (Metroid Prime 2 is quiete hard and dark though).
I already played Samus returns but I will still buy all four if they get ported to the switch. And yes I will even buy other M because I don't want Nintendo to stop making Metroid games because another one didn't sell well
The Mandolorian is basically Metroid. Space Bounty Hunter goes to planet to complete bounty, finds a powerful Baby, has to take it to a specific person/group etc
The reputation around Metroid Dread really is a strange one. It is the top game on Amazon right now, and even people who have never played Metroid are excited for this game. It is as if many nintendo fans are only now realizing that there has been this dark and brooding series of games under Nintendo's belt, and Metroid Dread is doing the best to show that off. And of course, that massive silence we had since Metroid Other M that left everyone blue balled.
The 2D Metroids are all masterpieces of 2D action-exploration games, even the somewhat more linear and less contiguous Fusion. They're all worth playing. Super Metroid in particular is still a classic that holds up till today.

This is the first time I’ve ever learned anything about Metroid’s lore and I’m here for it really. I can’t wait to play Dread. But could someone explain why Samus’ suits kept changing?
Red shirt guy here, the planet in super metroid was taken over by the space pirates, the whole structure of the interior of the planet was made by the chozo. Thats why you find structures riddled through the whole planet. Including the Mother Brain, also chozo craft.
Only in the English version, in the Japanese version she is very distrusting of Adam (and even hates being called princess, telling him to shove it up his ass when he calls her that, but in English the make her say it was a compliment), and is mentally weak due to a discovery that the Metroids eat mental and emotional energy which meant she absorbed the emotions of everything the Super Metroid ate during the fight against Mother Brain. This is also why the MB AI went haywire, because it spent so much time with the metroids which were radiating emotional energy which made it think it was human and had real emotions. She was then manipulated by Phantoon to cause all the events of Other M. Phantoon being the psychic remnants of the first Mother Brain (as revealed in the Japanese version of Super Metroid, but oddly left out of the English, because the series has a long history of translation mistakes apparently).
@@TealTrump11 most of the mistranslations in the older games were in the manuals. And the few mistranslations in Fusion didn't hurt its plot alone. But it's the tiny mistranslations all culminated in Other M being the mess it was, since it references them in detail, as well as having it's own mistranslation problems. So perhaps they just need to have a Hyrule Historia style book to clarify all this. Of course some of these mistranslations ended up being popular. Like Varia Suit is a mistranslation, but has become iconic on it's own (but dont expect a japanese made Metroid to put importance on the name like the Prime games did).

Such a shame the english version had so many plot holes and nonsense added in when it could've been that much better...

I love Samus and I love the Metroid series, and those moments of impending doom are great the first time you play, but I look back on it now and think gosh, if it weren't for that baby she'd have been long gone ages ago.
@@thequickmasterrace6 No. They escaped from their containment unit on the Mothership, but they left with samus at the end. Actually, they were the ones who piloted the ship down to pickup samus. Of course this was nearly 20 years ago, so let’s hope the developers didn’t forget. If they remember I can’t wait to see what they’ll look like with dreads graphics.
One thing to mention was that the Chozo originally created the Metroids to combat the X Parasite. The X Parasite was spreading like the “Flood” from Halo and they had to do something about it. The Metroids we’re keeping the X Parasite in check all this time until Samus was sent to destroy all of them. Her destroying them all caused the X Parasite to resurge and start multiplying again.

Fusion was my absolute favorite of the entire series. I replayed it a few weeks ago and today decided to start Super Metroid as well. But even though Fusion and Super Metroid graphics are so similar, after playing Fusion, it’s so annoying how FLOATY Samus’ jumps are in Super Metroid. It’s driving me nuts, lol. 😅

There are connections between Metroid Prime and the rest of the Metroid series. "Project Dread" is namedropped, and the Nightmare-X you fight in fusion comes from the actual Nightmare you encounter in Prime as well. That's in addition to the connections between the Chozo and the Metroids (and their purpose as the predators of the X parasite). Lastly, you didn't bring up anything from the ending of Samus Returns, which suggests an evil faction of Chozo that may play a role in Metroids Dread.
I always loved metroid the reason I'm excited for dread is because I've only played the classic games but I haven't finished yet because I thought it was too complicated when I was younger Nice thumbnail btw
My first Metroid game was Fusion which spoils everything in 2 and Super, and yet I found both Samus Returns and Super Metroid very enjoyable. Heck, fighting Metroids at every point in their life cycle in Metroid II/Samus Returns is so much more exciting compared to just reading about it and looking at concept art.
I know you said you wouldn't cover Prime now since the events of it aren't referenced much in the mainline games, but the Ridley fight that was added into Samus Returns actually does act as a pretty big connector to the Prime series, because Ridley in Samus Returns is wearing the remnants of his cybernetic armor from Prime 3. One big reason why this is notable is because for some odd reason some people kept spreading this BS rumor that Sakamoto didn't consider Prime canon, which isn't true, he simply stated that his involvement with Prime is minimal so he doesn't have much input on what those games put into the lore. With Samus Returns featuring such a notable connection to the Prime trilogy in some fashion though it does put to rest those aforementioned BS rumors, as that game was produced by Sakamoto and it was likely his decision to add in the Ridley fight which wasn't in the Game Boy original.
I grew up in the Metroid prime trilogy so those are actually my favorite I loved them on GameCube so much 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻 I did play super Metroid too. Hopefully they let something out soon to where I can play the whole entire saga without jumping thru hoops
Decent recap, missed the crazy (unlockable) plot twist at the end of Samus Returns, though; which is depicted in the Chozo art during the Dread trailer... Or that the baby metroid in Super Metroid nearly killed Samus before it recognised and subsequently rescued her. Or that the creatures she (optionally) saves in Super Metroid return in Metroid Fusion, which means they could, possibly, make an appearance in Dread.
the reason ridley is covered in robot parts in samus returns is because hes still recovering from being meta ridley in the prime series. so yeah, the prime games are referenced in the main series now.
right? I assumed the name Biologic Space Lab just referred to it being a lab studying biological stuff....because it's part of the Galactic Federation....which I'm pretty sure they outright explain in Fusion...
It’s been about 5 years since I’ve replayed Fusion. And although I tend to remember the events well, being reminded of how overtly open-ended the ending of it was with the question of the Galactic Federation coming for Samus (bonded with arguably the ONLY existing Metroid DNA left in the universe), it’s really only drives home how long we’ve been waiting for Dread.
What might be confusing is, that Super Metroid is considered Metroid 3 and Fusion is considered 4, even though Other M is technically 4 and Fusion should be 5. But whatever. The reason for this probably is, because Fusion came out before Other M and it was already called 4. Other M came out later, but took place before Fusion, so they could not just rename Fusion to 5, so Other M is pretty much considered to be Metroid 3,5. lol
The prime games are basically just side stories between metriod one and two, they don’t directly contradict anything so it’s fine. Other M however does contradict most of the games so it’s better off to just ignore it.
@@jordanmarcial3670 honestly no not really, it’s not extremely important to the overall timeline and doesn’t really have any major events in it. I think the only thing you’d really need to know is Adam Malkovich who appears in Metroid Fusion and even Metroid Dread (as we saw from the treehouse), I could be forgetting something but that’s what I think you should mainly know from Other M (basically it’s not an incredibly important game to the timeline but still has a few key details in there) this video does do a great job at recapping the main events in Metroid though.
I’ve played all the games multiple times and I just cannot WAIT to be able to play Dread on my switch! I specifically got my switch to play Prime 4 when it would come out, but announcing Dread just made me even happier! Love this franchise
They skip over it when talking about the Metroid series, like the the Metroid Dread development video, but they probably don't want to officially decanonize it.
@@archedmash9501 They also skipped the Prime games, Zero Mission and Samus Returns, that doesn't mean they don't consider them canon. They only focused on Metroid NES, Metroid 2, Super and Fusion since those were back in the days considered the numbered 2D entries.
