I was in a music class at SF State during the first S&M album and the conductor came to our class and talked to us about the upcoming performance. Someone asked him about a click track and he said they didn't need one cuz they had Lars. He was their click track. It was organic and they followed and moved with the band. He said the band was so good and professional that they only had a couple of rehearsals.

I think I've read somewhere that for the first S&M concert they had about one or max two rehearsals and for the S&M2 they said in new interview that they didn't need one... Astonishing! 🙂

In the original, 1999 version, it was none other than the legendary Michael Kamen, who conducted the orchestra. He also wrote the symphonic arrangements for the whole 1999 concert - and, as such, it is those very same arrangements that what we are hearing, in this song and throughout most of this 2019 commemorative concert.

You should also check out the version when they performed it originally with the SF Symphony back in the day.

I agree, that version, no offense, is more vocally interesting for analysis.

Agreed, the original had more nuance in the vocals. So glad I decided to go last minute in 99!! Still one of my all time fav concerts

This is also the San Francisco Sympothy. It's off of the S&M2 album. S&M was way better. But my point being is this is also the SFS.

Some of my favorite singers are not technically "great singers." That includes James, Iggy Pop, and Lemmy from Motorhead. But they're very good at expressing emotions deep from the soul. (And sometimes you get both, such as Chris Cornell)

Love this song and - human, wish they would have explored this style more. Dynamic, dramatic, powerful hard rock songs. My favorite songs after the original 4 classics.

I remember myself in 1999 with 15 years only listening this CD again and again and again. And trying to do dictation of the arrangements to play with my violin "with them". I absolutely love them since then.

Written for Metallica's S&M album, every song on the album had arrangements by the legendary Michael Kamen, and I couldn't imagine them any other way. Kamen had such an amazing feel for wrapping orchestral arrangements around contemporary music in a way that really elevates the whole song, instead of just serving as a barely noticeable background addition like happens so often. Kamen was supposed to conduct this second series of S&M concerts as well, like he did the first series, but he died before they had everything in stone. Edwin Outwater was the conductor for S&M2.

Killswitch Engage should be your next new love lol The band has an interesting history having had two main singers - Jesse Leach who started it but left, replaced by Howard Jones, who also eventually left and Jesse came back haha. I feel you would REALLY like this band, they're high energy, lyrical, deep, and most of all both vocalists are *chefs kiss*. I'd probably recommend The End of Heartache live. the video with about 1m views has perfect audio and is a fantastic showcase of at least Howards insane talent. Genuinely one of the best singer/screamers out there in many people's opinions.

I agree in the development of James voice and singing tecnique. At the first album it was pretty horrible, getting better for each album. Until the giant step at the Metallica album ("Black album") he was a great singer of trash metal, but after he became a great singer in whatever rock/metal they would play.

Has James ever had vocal training? He seems to be more of a natural singer.

In the original studio song, the part you talk about artificially changing his voice up to the mic, is because in the song itself, there’s a radioish effect on his part at the beginning of that section, so when he does it live he tries to get close as he can to mimicking it . Hope it makes sense now ! Great insight

Oh man wish it was the 1999 version. James is still a solid vocalist but that was really his peak for this kind of music

Funny you should mention the technical difficulties of recording and mixing a band with a live orchestra. Bob Rock (Metallica’s producer at the time) said he had a nightmare with the original ‘99 version of S&M when he discovered a delay between the band and orchestra when mixing the album. He realised that Michael Kamen had been conducting off of Lars’ drumbeat, but hadn’t realised that James sets the tempo and Lars follows him (the same way Keith Moon did with Pete Townshend in The Who). By the time it got to the orchestra they were slightly behind, something that was imperceptible during the show but was evident in the recording and required a hell a lot of work to fix. For what it’s worth, pretty sure all instruments here are live although (knowing the issue from the previous concert) it’s entirely possible they’re on a click.

I will say, every time Metallica has played live with a symphony, it is played live. There's an interesting documentary about the original S&M concert that I think you would like: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w7BzJXXW_oo.html

Did the reason that sounds so good is because it’s in such a small arena under 15,000 and they’re playing dead centre notice how the crowds always louder this is why it sounds so good. This is how they overcame the problems you’re talking about and that’s why it’s so fucking awesome.

When you look closely, you can see that every member of the symphony has ear monitors in. Metallica also wrote this song specifically for the San Francisco Symphony.

I also learned quickly that, especially in live band concerts, you are SUPPOSED to basically kiss the mic when performing live. In the context of, at least rock and metal, you need to kiss the mic.

In the first show with the symphony it was said that the band would just play the songs straight up and the symphony just had to latch. Only thing was that there were no place for improvisation for the band. No clicks. That time Michel Kamen did the arrangement and conducted the orchestra. The orchestra was stunned by the loud roar from the Metallica fans as opposed from the polite applause of a normal symphony audience. You should check out Dimmu Borgir if you haven't yet. Gateways or Kings of the carnival creation live with Norwegian radio orchestra at the Forces of the northern lights show! Black metal with an orchestra and choir.
