@@TheRealMew2king I agree with most things except the Falcon placement, at least in theory. I believe he goes even with Puff, which pushes him just above Sheik, as Sheik has two really bad MUs, being Fox and Puff, but Falcon only has one, being Falco, and the other ones are only a moderate loss rather than being ICs Pika levels of bad. Do you agree with the statement that Falcon, when playing 20GX style, beats Puff IF an LGL of 60 is in place?

The CP meta is heavily in Falcon's favour, he has more consistent combo starters out of a better dash dance, up air and stomp, early kill confirms, and a really strong circle camp game, particularly on Dreamland. Puff's main benefit is walling him out with bairs, but when the risk reward is skewed in Falcons favour in that scenario and Puff can't run away with her gradually gained lead...

@@mathunit1 I don't think I know a single other top player who has Marth below Falco, and for good reason. Falco's laser game, arguably his most powerful tool in neutral, will only get worse as time goes on and top players start hitting more consistent power shields on them. Mango (probably the most qualified player to talk about Falco right now) has discussed this a good bit recently. Marth and Fox in particular can capitalize on this heavily. As power shielding continues to rise in usage, Falco's match-ups against Marth and Fox will move from relatively even to disadvantaged. M2k has always rated Falco higher relative to other top players. There was a time, around 2012-2014 ish, when M2k thought Falco was the best character in the game. Other than his Falco placement, though, I think it's great. If he pushed Falco to 4 (but still in S tier as Falco is obviously still an incredible player) and moved Marth and Puff up one place each, I think it would more closely match the other top player consensus.

I'm the same, I just didn't explain my thought processes as well as in the past. In the past I'd just tell people my conclusions, and people didn't like that. My brain did all the technical hard work that I thought there was no reason to say out loud.

One of M2K’s points are one of my main reasons that Mang0 will never be as good as PPMD. PPMD’s defensive Falco play was almost impenetrable and when mixed up with offensive punishes, it really brought out Falco’s full potential. When PPMD perfected this, we got the year nobody could beat him.

I did love his comment though that if you're not good at Fox, even though he's technically the best character, he's absolute garbage. Hell, even when at the peak of skill, it's still somewhat easy to whiff with Fox or even SD with some of his moves. Really easy to get caught up in going fast instead of actually taking it slower and trying to win.

Even if Armada or Mango or Hbox are considered the best players ever, M2K will always be the og god! Edit: Sheik is real good, but she hasnt won a supermajor, pretty much just because of hbox and armada. For example: Genesis 5. Plup technically didnt win with Sheik because he had to go Fox vs hbox

I'm glad you didn't put Puff first like a lot of arrogant/salty players do. She's good, but you can't automatically assume a character is the best because the best player plays them. I've noticed you replying to a lot of comments, so in case you see this M2K I wanna tell you that you're one of my top favourite Smash players of all time. I have mad respect for your technical knowledge across all 5 games and you're part of the reason why I've gotten more into Melee recently

You along with Zero introduced me to competitive smash and showed how truly deep not only melee but the entirety of smash as a game . I’m glad I went to that tournament all those years ago , competition is a challenge at heart thus there is hardships , struggles , someone that loses and someone that wins . But there is something truly remarkable about this time spent and experience in it .Melee is a game I always keep coming back to ! Thank you M2K for showing me this . and also a very agreeable tier list ! XD Your thought process and logic behind it was my favourite part of this tier list ! I learned something fascinating watching this. I love watching high skill players play melee. I'm not very advanced myself, so I'm hearing a lot of tips I can't actively apply to my fighting techniques. Fun learning so much metagain. What I found fascinating is that GENETICS is a factor in how well someone can compete. I never thought of reaction time as something you're born with. Kinda blew my mind that that's a component that contributes to an individual's skill cap.

@Ultimate L nah, melee will pretty much live forever. Zain is a good example of a new face in the game and I'm sure more people will follow in his footsteps. The game has outlived all it's successors because melee is a reliable game with great fundamentals. And is a basis that many smash games will come back to look back on. Like ultimate removing wavedashing but allowing standing moves out of a run, or cutting all ending lag on aerials by half to pretty much make an Auto l-cancel system. Melee is only gonna die if the community allows it to and I don't see that happening too soon. Also, no it's not plateauing that's kinda the whole meme with melee reaching 20xx where people reach perfection with the game. People are still gonna get better, maybe not fast, but they're gonna get better. It's kinda like classical music. Even if classical musicians have the same songs to pick from that era of music, for some reason the music will never get stale. It ain't really about new music at this point, it's about how far we can push human limits on the technical proficiency of playing an Instrument. Or going on cs 1.6 and complaining about how everyone uses the ak47. The guns or the music piece isnt really what we're after, the same way melee isn't played for by representation of characters, but rather how the players play the characters instead.

I mean, Smash World Tour would have put it back on the map. Definitely could have seen multiple top 15-20 players getting good sponsors to represent them in the finale. Apex back. Royal flush back. It was pretty much a revival of melee... ...until Corona stopped it.

@@MsDestroyer900 I mean it's not like GameCubes or the game is still being produced so as time goes on its going to get harder and harder to play that way. That means people would have to get their hands on emulators at some point. Could be wrong but wouldn't an emulator feel different from actually playing the game? And that's not even bringing up how Nintendo could shut that stuff down very quickly. I'm not saying it's dying soon but I'm pretty sure it's gonna die at some point

I really appreciate all of the thought process and logic that you put into this tier list. A lot of people who disagree with people like Leffen just end up being argumentative and standoff-ish, and while I wouldn't expect that from you, it's really sick to see a quality explanation of matchup spreads/ranking rather than just "it's not 6-4 xd hehe"

a good list with good reasoning. i'll just add that zain is actually 2-0 vs aMSa lifetime, their only two times playing being at GOML 2019 and SNS5. however aMSa has made ppu switch to fox after bodying his marth

I think there's an important difference between a character's spot on the tier list when played by a Melee player, and when played by a person who is solely aiming to win. This is why we don't see Falco players like PPMD, who are more patient and analytical, and I think it could be one of the reasons Hungrybox is the only person playing Jigglypuff at the top level. People generally only like playing Melee as a highly technical game.

I feel like Falco is very underrated is because the main top player that optimized falco was PPMD, and no one has been able to really replicate his amizing neutral, which is falco's greatest strength.

Great tier list M2K. The only thing I think even could be argued is that Falcon may be better than Sheik because he doesn't lose to Falco as hard as she loses to Puff, but she definitely does better against the lower characters than he does except maybe Yoshi because he can break the armor way earlier.

We should bring back the Young Link counterpick meta for Puff. That'd be really fun to watch on stream. It seems like a really good back-up to have for Fox mains when the Fox just isn't enough against someone like Hungrybox, and it'd force Puff mains to divide their attention again between memorizing both the Young Link and Fox MU.

Extremely well thought out and informative. I do think the fox puff matchup is worse than 55-45 but you give solid reasoning for every character. Great video and great tier list

Cool list M2K. I agree 100%. I haven't played too much competitively because of school and work but this was basically my Melee tier list too. Note: Melee is my favourite Smash Game. I still have my GameCube and the game I bought when it came out in 2001. I'm in love with Melee..... xD

After thinking that Melee was not my kind of smash game, I have spent the last two weeks binging a ton of Melee content and come to the conclusion that it is much better than I gave it Credit for. I will now proceed to practice C.Falcon to not get destroyed by the CPU anymore. Thank you for inspiring me. Also, I really like your content.

i know i used to sit there and listen to it as a kid (in 2008 i used to speedrun megaman 2 just for fun lol) on MegaMan Anniversary Collection, and I'd shoot my gun to the beat of the music on the beginning of wily stage 1 on the left side lol (Since after 3 shots you can't keep the rhythm as much since only 3 pellets can be existing on screen at once).

@@TheRealMew2king I loved Mega Man 2 so much that it influenced me to play Mega Man in smash Ultimate. My favorite part about Wiley stage one is angling metal blades when you go up the ladder, using a combo of the three items, and the boss music when fighting the dragon. Great work M2K!

Regarding Pika Uthrow -You actually can regrab Fox and Falco at 0% from Uthrow, but if they DI behind it's frame perfect, so it's still best to get some percent first. -Falcon can get out of the CG earlier than Spacies (around 70%), so you can't guarantee a 0-death on him. You can still connect Usmash, but it won't kill, so Utilt is actually optimal as the CG ender vs Falcon if he tries no DI jump out at 70%. Utilt leads to a guaranteed aerial, which can in turn set up an edgeguard. -Related trivia, Pichu can CG Falcon for longer but can't regrab Spacies at 0%. His Uthrow release point is lower than Pika's.

Does how you think about marth v fox consider the better "B game" ,as you put it, of marth in general and fox having to be more on point to win? When I think about the difference on average or on a non-peak of play, because maybe fox wins slightly or even convincingly if the fox and marth both play a+ game or something on every stage but fd, but in the average case I don't see how the fox needing more effort to win isn't "outplaying".

i forgot to mention, in the past, UCF and controller issues made fox more inconsistent, which was another reason i went the sheik/marth co-main route (Sheik is least affected by controller, much less than marth/fox). Most of what I said for the tier list assumes players are on their A game, otherwise ICs would even be higher than that.

I couldn't have explained the top 4 better myself. I think people want to put marth higher because of Zains recent success, but not enough people want to give credit to Zain as a player and how he's just straight up outplaying a lot of opponents that people might otherwise think Zain should lose to.

But I think a lot of the people that think he should be higher think so because of how good Zain makes him look, and might gloss over how good of a player Zain personally is.

I think the only things I would change about your tier list are to switch Jiggs and Marth, and switch Yoshi and Samus. Other than that, spot on imo. But what do I know, you’re the top player lmao.

this makes me really want to see a "lame" campy defensive falco. a lot of people give wizzy hate for not playing as risky or flashy as other falcons but i always felt really hype to see that a falcon was doing so well, it felt like he was approaching peak or optimal play for falcon, and showing what he could accomplish. it'd be really cool to see someone fully make use of and abuse falco's strengths and take him to his full potential

My modern day no-name Fox agenda places Falco at a solid 4th and the next three are interchangeable at human levels. It’s all based on how you value Marth’s matchups, which I think he does better than Falco in the head-to-head, Fox and Puff MUs, especially Fox. Everything else I agree with. Well spoken video!
