With home prices in the US and Canada skyrocketing, maybe it's time to look at Mexico. You can get your dream house for half the price or less. Do you want a pool and hot tub? Maybe a rooftop deck? 5 minute walk to the beach? A safe community where neighbors all know each other (and no gate out front.) You can find that in Mexico.
If you want to retire early in Mexico, or just work fewer hours you can do that because Mexico is so much less expensive than the US. You can get a new single family home for as low as $75,000 USD in La Paz. Most Americans and Canadians are more attracted to homes in the $200-300,000 range. But that can include marble counters, air conditioning, pools, hot tubs, etc. And you can probably afford a pool guy and house cleaning service too.
Rick and Susan (and their dog) are Canadians who moved to Mexico 2022. They bought a house that was under construction but were able to customize the final product. After touring their brand new home, I was amazed to hear that it cost significantly less than $300,000.
If you're an expat or want to move to Mexico, be sure to subscribe for great tips on living south of the border!

Dishwashers do exist and they work well (and can save water, which is important in La Paz.) Ovens are almost all LP gas. And gas ovens suck compared to electric. I saw one house where they had a gas cook top and an electric oven. It is possible!

Hello Brighton! Thank you for this great video! It was really awesome to see what a new construction house could get you for your dollar, to include a pool and roof top sitting area. I think my wife and I are generally thinking "centro" for where ever we end up. But, this video definitely highlights the perks of being slightly out of town and being able to get some space, as well as amenities. Me thinks the slightly higher heat temperatures of La Paz could be mitigated with a pool!! Safe travels!

@AlmostRetiredinMexico
@AlmostRetiredinMexico 2 года назад
I think that all of Comitan is on septic systems. My house is on the beach and we are on septic (it's far away from the beach.) I think we are all too low to have things flow towards the treatment plant, so septic is the answer. Folks up a little higher are on sewers.

@AlmostRetiredinMexico
@AlmostRetiredinMexico 2 года назад
Great suggestion! I want to make some dog videos. I know there is something called Pet and Breakfast that does boarding. Dogs are allowed on the malecon and most restaurants are good with well behaved dogs on their patios. Downtown it's easy to walk a dog. But out here in El Centenario, in the more local areas, there are lots of dogs on the streets - sometimes in packs. :-(

Good price. What kind of sewage system do they use? How much is electricity? Do you need a backup generator? Taxes, property etc? Thks
@AlmostRetiredinMexico
@AlmostRetiredinMexico 6 месяцев назад
I don't know for sure, but I'm going to answer for my house. I have a septic system, but there is a sewer system for houses that are at a higher elevation (we are right on the beach.) Electriciy cost is complicated. If you use very little electricity, it's dirt cheap. But if you use a lot it's expensive. There are different tiers and if you go to the top tier you get stuck there for a year. Most people that get to that tier buy a solar system. But $25-50 a month isn't unusual without a pool. The pool can get very expensive especially if you heat it. AC can also get expensive. Electricity goes out a few times a year typically. It's kinda like the US 30 years ago. Someone hits a pole and the power is out for a few hours. A hurricane can knock it out for days. Some people have generators. Most do not. Property taxes are about $500USD per year.

Have you considered living in a place where the water that is extracted from the subsoil has Arsenic?
@AlmostRetiredinMexico
@AlmostRetiredinMexico 2 года назад
All the water we use for drinking and cooking is bottled water. It's much more affordable than bottled water in the US. That said, I should test the bottled water... Baja California Sur and the area around Guadalajara are known for having arsenic in the city water. I'm just assuming the water bottlers are removing it...

Some definite similarities between this house and my house. Mine was about 80% completed when I bought it and the builders have been great. I paid them extra to add on a casita/garage and a third bedroom up top on a roof that looks a lot like this one. Screw the neighbors, the bedroom is going up there.
@AlmostRetiredinMexico
@AlmostRetiredinMexico 2 года назад
You put that bedroom wherever you want. I think this builder owns all the lots in a certain area so it's a tiny bit like a homeowners association. I don't know if there are restrictions once you buy it...
