No fix. Just a teardown of the Toshiba rear projection TV that we found next to a bin in Brighton. we managed to make it fit into the bin.
I have to buy most items myself to make these video's so any help would be greatly appreciated "become a Patreon" / markusfuller

the first thing i did was take the fresnel lens to the lawn and proceed to melt everything in sight! now that i know there are no harmful components ill continue to tear it down to fit in the bin. nice vid

I love the huge lens that comes out of the screen which is a Fresnel lens great for a solar scorcher

Mark, your videos just keep getting better and better! We had that exact model TV when I was little..... Also. I think that liquid is Parrafin.

@markusfuller 10 лет назад
Hi George. Yes you are most likely correct. it had the consistency and would make perfect sense to use paraffin. :-)

No good if the Tv overheats, no wonder they got the nickname curtain catchers! Haha...

Yep this was the first semi flat screen that came around then a few expensive flat screen plasmas came along now we Have LCD and LED and OLED which is already dead to a similar organic but cheaper and better material called QLED which is better than OLED

For those Yanks, what in England is referred to as "parrafin" is known in the States as KEROSENE, and NOT the common wax blocks used to seal home-canned foods. Since the food items are usually put in jars, the argument of whether it's "canning" or "tinning" is moot.

As I understand even older tvs (back in early black an white era) were rather radioactive. at least it was explained that way to me.

+Four Side Gaming These were probably cathode ray tube TVs. They work by emitting electrons (beta particles) down a tube, use a lot of these to cause flashes of light and build an image. They were actually used up until very recently. But, beta particles are mostly harmless.

I just disassembled mine and was amazed at the quality of the mirror! i don't think i've ever seen such a quality mirror, almost feel bad for throwing it out (you almost poked your buddies eye out btw lol)

Hi I kept the mirror for weeks afterwards hoping to find a use for it as it was so good. but eventually binned it.

i have 2 of these, but one of them is quite tricky to repair... maybe you could help? i replaced the STK chips on my 1st one, it was on a separate board all by itself. the 2nd TV has the STK chips on the same board as the flyback. quite a bit dangerous... how the heck do you discharge the flyback transformer on a CRT projector?

I have taken delivery of a Dave Smith Pro 2 to day, unfortunately the keys F4 through to C5 don't work at all, they don't trigger midi note data either, but the after touch works. Do you have any idea what it could be? DSI are sending me a new Keybed to try

It's "Fren-ELL", NOT "FREZ-n'l", a stepped lens invented by Augustin-Jean Fresnel for use in lighthouses.

Great video! I guess this explains where you got the TV for the channel trailer :P I chuckled at the Rolf Harris moment there (i think thats what it was?) I think the liquid is to match the refractive indexes of the lens to the front of the tube, though I am not sure. That was a fair bit of dust, that would severely degrade performance, no wonder they tossed it. Dust builds up not only from heat convection, but static/HV electricity too. Heatsinks are very useful, i've got a box of them, when you're making stuff and you don't know how big a heatsink is needed, you can easy try a few, and also, they're something that is a bit hard to visualize in a case, so if you need to know if it will fit, what batter way then to actually try and stick one in! I also grab the transformers/inductors, it's pretty hard to get a good bits box of them, and if they aren't the right value, you can just re-wind them :P

hey markus, you should have mentioned the flyback converters and how to make big sparks with them! no no, i meant you should have mentioned the safety issues involved in opening a crt screen and stuff! No really, i just takes a few parts from the same crt and a 9V battery, great fun. google "angelfire flyback". Good video!

how did you discharge discharge the lens because you skipped it.
@markusfuller
@markusfuller 8 лет назад
+Johany Rios Hello Johany, I did not discharge the 3 CRT projectors as the TV had been left out for a few weeks before I took it apart. but yes you are quite correct in that you should discharge these things before handling. If i had it powered before dismantling I would have shorted the capped connector at the circuit board end first, the way I would have done this (if i was going to scrap the item ) is wish a scrunched up ball of aluminium foil and wearing a glove i would have dabbed it around all the capacitors. I have done this before and there can be a few sparks and crackles but never on an item that i am repairing only something to be scrapped. Best wishes from Markus

sorry about my bad english. loved this video, so many memmories, that bbc thing.. the danish broadcast corporation did the exact same thing.
@markusfuller
@markusfuller 7 лет назад
Thanks Olav. sadly the BBC gets worse I get threatening letters every month from them where they say I should buy a TV licence or go to court, but I have no TV so legally I do not need a licence but they keep writing every month. its a waste of money and their programmes have no quality now compared with the free 160 TV channels we have.

years ago, i dont know if they still do but they where driving around and knocking on peopels doors, and i basicly had the news on in the background when i opened the door, so i pay every 6 month now..
@markusfuller
@markusfuller 7 лет назад
Olav Schioett Yes they have been to my house once then said they must come in and check if i have a TV, I told them they have no powers whatsoever without a search warrant and they are to go and get a search warrant from a judge and I will ask for a copy of the evidence they give to a judge to get that order, they have never been back since. there are so many videos on youtube showing them lying to people saying they have a right to search your house. where infact they have less powers than a traffic warden.

that is horrorble, (agine sorry for my english) the whole TV licence koncept seams to me as a relec, from a diffferent time, that is no longer relevant.

Very interesting video. You wouldn't still have any of those three lenses you pulled out of it? I am asking, as I am one of those nerds who builds large format wet plate cameras, and those lenses look very fast and could possibly be the correct focal length for a large plate. It's unlikely, but they might actually have the focal length printed on them (hopefully somewhere between 200 and 400mm), so if you still have one lying around, do let me know, as I'd be interested in buying it, though preferably, if at all possible, not the one you wiped your finger across :-)
@markusfuller
@markusfuller 10 лет назад
Hi Jason. Im really sorry but they went into the recycling bins. I could not get the lenses off the housings, I tried but they were solid so i did not keep them. My apologies.
@jasonkillbourn
@jasonkillbourn 10 лет назад
markusfuller No worries, it was just on the off chance you still had them, but thank you for the reply. Oddly enough, I had just started looking for old overhead projectors to cannibalise, as they have a remarkably similar looking lens in them, but until I saw your video, I hadn't realised they were used in those back projection TV's, and you get three of them! Anyway, I'll probably go and have a word with the people who run the local waste site, as I imagine they get the odd one dumped there from time to time.

@jasonkillbourn

+Heather Lee Wilson Thank you, I certainly would be interested. I've since discovered that a lens taken from a broken overhead projector works really well on my camera, but I'd be fascinated to see how one of these TV lenses shapes up by comparison.

it would be interesting to replace the optical parts of the rear projection television with a laser TV projector unit, I think that the liquid is colourless kerosene.
@markusfuller
@markusfuller 7 лет назад
yes you are correct about the clear fluid. I think it would make a good rear projection laser TV also.

I scrapped my TV licence a long time ago. the BBC are like spoiled kids - "if you don't pay us you cannot watch any other of the 100s of channels that we don't own". I think they should use a pay per view subscription but they know a large portion of the population don't actually want to watch celebrities dancing and would quite happily make do with some of the better channels on offer for free.

markusfuller I think the only "BBC" program I ever watched in my life was "Ashens Tech Dump" on RU-vid.
