I met a retired stuntman at his trucking office in 1981. He was a stuntman in 21 of Wayne's films with photos on the wall to prove it. He said "Mr Wayne" was a very kind and generous man to everyone. When out for dinner he always picked up the check. When filming in Mexico he took over the little towns they filmed in. It meant a lot to the people in these towns that worked on the films.

I loved him in that film where he killed all those pedofiles back in the early 70s and that other one with the severed hand that escapes from the deep freeze and goes round molesting poor innocent students 👁 👁 👄
Harry Brown - he kicked some ass in that film - I watched it in prison and all the lads were cheering on Caine even if most of them were the type of young men who Harry Brown was punishing. 👁 👁 👄

Caine’s memoir is one of the best books ever about Hollywood, he arrived at just the right time when the old studio system was ending and a new group of actors, like him, were coming in. So he saw the best of both worlds.
The "greatest American actor" ?!?! He was mediocre at best. He played the exact same character in every single one of his films. He was good at playing "John Wayne" and that's about it.
So? John Wayne was a big fucking bad-ass and played that part very well. Not the greatest actor I'll give you. But he is the only actor I know that I enjoyed every movie of his that I have seen without exception. He definitely deserved his Academy award.
You'll never be able, never ever, to realize just how invaluable these Michael Caine storytelling sessions are, simply never. Thank you so much, samandriel!
Nice to hear some kind words about The Duke, from another Hollywood/film icon. Far too many ridicule John Wayne, for too many bad reasons. Big fan of Michael Caine and John Wayne!!!

Michael Caine, arguably one of the best active British actors.........sharing memories of arguable one of the greatest icons of American cinema ever. I love this video!!!! Oh how I wish he'd share more!
The amazing thing about his anecdote about meeting Jane Russel and John Wayne is that he was a genuine fan of these two great actors. And, now, he has outclassed them. The fan becomes the legend himself. Great show Sir Caine
watch him on michael parkinson. he tells lots of stories andmade me laugh so much...Michael even told caine'' I'm the one asking the questions here...! Because when he asked micheal caine a question, caine answers then goes on and on telling his stories..at one point he tells micheal, can i say something? ha ha then continues telling some more stories. Love him, parkinson who is so patient and all their stories.

The best John Wayne I ever heard was by John Wayne when he played the centurion in"The Greatest Story Ever Told:" "Truly this Man was the Sonna Gaht..."
ed campion If what you wrote is who you believe him to be, I’m sure your Perception of what kind of human being he is would lie in shambles if you really did know him at all. Haha
I remember James Caan being interviewwd at a premier years ago, and the interviewer said, at the end of the interview, "You seem like a really nice guy". to which James replied, "I always try to come across as a nice guy when I'm being interviewed in front of millions of people". Don't forget these people are very good at assuming a role. It's their job.

+Michael Smith He was filming across the street from my home about 5 years ago and signing autographs and chatting to people. He was even spotted in a local newsagents buying a paper and again chatting to people. I was indoors writing and never knew he was about 50 yards away from me. Never saw him. Kicked myself for a week!
Zulu; Caine’s first “A” movie. Still have it, still play it, and Caine, as does the rest of the cast, provides a truly great performance. Thanks, Michael.
It's funny how Michael describes Jane Russell as " getting on a bit" when he met her because I reckon she would have been in her mid-40s at that time. Now, moving on to the present time. Imagine Julie Roberts or Nicole Kidman - who are now both older than Jane was back then -being described as " getting on a bit" I bet they would be mortified.
having listened to Michael Caines Elephant to Hollywood on audiobook I know he tells a great story which kept me very entertained for many miles out running, he really is a national treasure.
@@m.t.fisher4655 Michael Caine was young then, and was only warming up for his subsequent stupendous performance in "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels." He and Shirley were hilarious together in Gambit.
Michael Caine is incredible just for the fact that he is in demand today as he was when he was in his twenties. He just morphed into character acting. Average gent with a superior talent.
I've always loved him in all his roles, The Batman movies, Blame in on Rio, etc. Funny, funny stuff about Jane Russell being the Christian Scientist and John Wayne's advice to not wear the suede shoes. If I'm ever famous I'll remember that
A British gentleman as always. No disparaging remarks even in his illustrious career. Probably why Mr. Caine is one of my favorite actors. Zulu is still my favorite movies an in my opinion his better roles.
I've never heard him tell the Storey about being friends with John Wayne. I've heard the helicopter and shoes one but not the hospital one. He's one of the greats. Recommend Harry Brown.
Michael Caine is a sweetheart. And you'd be surprised how often in Hollywood the bigger the star the nicer they are. It's not 100%, but it's more often than you think.
Nice to know. Wuz a time when the writers ensconced in Gollywood tried to warn us... like in film Soylent Green. Educated & word-smiths in WW2\ Korea writers worked in military intelligence. Syriana got close.
This funny, lovely, talented man was once asked by a silly young female reporter, talking about his time as a soldier in the Korean War, if he had killed anyone. His wonderful face froze and he said, " I was a machine gunner. "
