The third in a series of Gifford Lectures by Professor Michael Gazzaniga. Recorded 15 October, 2009 at the Playfair Library Hall, the University of Edinburgh.
The interpreter is the device we humans enjoy that provides us with the capacity to see the meanings behind patterns of our emotions, behavior and thoughts.
This concept is central to understanding the relationship between our brain and our strong sense of self.
In a way, it is the device that liberates us from our automatic ways spelled out in Lecture 1 and 2.
The interpreter constructs the sense that there is a me arising out of the ongoing neuronal chatter in the brain and making all of lifes moment-to-moment decisions.
Our compelling sense of being a unified self armed with volition, deployable attention and self-control is the handiwork of the interpreter, for it brings coherence to a brain that is actually a vastly parallel and distributed system.
This view stands in contrast to much neuroscientific theorizing or existential musing about our unified, coherent nature.
In most models of brain and cognitive mechanism, one can identify, as Marvin Minsky once said, the box that makes all the decisions.

Terrific! The "Interpreter" that Mike uncovered so long ago is one of the key findings in brain science in my view. Bravo.

But the ironic thing, is that all of this, all of these concluding and so called amazing new theories and "calculations" to figuring out many aspects that we never realized before are just more THOUGHTS. The thought of all of this, all of what this man is explaining is just another thought from his brain, and from ours. Everything is a thought based upon a concept which is creates patterns and conditions that are brain apply's which feeds more to our ego and creates more of our personality.

That interpreter conception puts so called "women logic" into interesting perspective as a state when interpreter just don't care to give any logicaly sounding reasoning for acts.

No. If any of it were true suggests they might be accounting for different perceptions and intuitions. I am curious why men will implore common sense so to speak when making these "nonsense" arguments. The chess grandmaster struggling to account for his performance is a good example of a rational person trying to account for a logical ability that doesn't report to their ability to report. I'm not saying that anything irrational a female says is based on some hidden intuition but that perhaps there are variables not accounted for especially if dealing with relationships. Male stupidity is rewarded anyways : violence is a failure of our abilities to model others intentions and communicate. But females being irrational is some kind of hormone thing. By statistics alone we should all be equally full of shit.

Есть перевод его книги «Кто за главного?», которая в точности повторяет курс этих лекций (только без видео и практически без картинок)

Professor Gazaniga was exhausted at the end. They should have stopped the questions earlier.
