@@Chicagomadeshortty that was new at the time. the same way that you watch skateboarding from the 90s and they freak the fuck out over things that are really commonplace now, all sports have evolved extremely rapidly over the past 30 years. things like this are so common that kids are doing it in pick up games at the park here. but at the time it was unheard of.
Most young people can't realise that MJ like many other 80s and 90s players actually invented moves that now are common in the NBA so they don't think it's a big deal but it was back then as it was new and MJ make it look so normal and easy by his standard, there is a reason why some NBA players (I'd say most of them!) say MJ is the most influential player ever.
@@BaggySu The "flop" started when more European players started coming to the NBA. It's in their DNA. They've been doing it in soccer for decades and decades, so it's part of the culture. I think they call it "showmanship", but I'm not sure. So they do the same thing when they play basketball. Little kids from the "European Invasion" era such as D-Wade, Lebron, James Harden, Curry, etc grew up watching those guys flop, so they think it's normal. I'm 50 and I just started watching soccer a little bit over the last year. These guys get tapped lightly, and go purposely flying to the ground, writhing on the ground, clutching their leg in pain. Then the referee gives the red/yellow card, and the filthy flopper jumps up and runs up and down the field like nothing ever happened. All game long The only thing worse than a liar and a thief is a flopper. A fucking filthy flopper.
Jordan had a handle but he didn't even need it because his pre-dribble ball fakes, footwork, and quick first step got him to the rim with ease. No need to put on an exhibition.
What was cool is how he had the athletic ability to be as flashy as you like, but he was so calculating and efficient that he used the fewest moves and the least effort necessary to dominate. He was more fundamentally tactical than even John Stockton or Tim Duncan while possessing Olympic quality athleticism.
True. Dude mastered every aspect. Even his 3P% was above average for a 2, despite being that guy who could blow by anyone.....and he improved it every year or two. And that was when the 3P wasn't nearly as big of a part of guys' game as now.
I remember my history teacher, while I was in 8th grade , took me and my best friend to Bulls vs Clippers(in Los Angeles). I thought I was nobody to him. This was the late 80s people. No one did that. Especially a teacher. He’s now a Dr. and beloved by many. That day he made us feel so special, and yes Jordan did a break away slam in that game. Priceless.
Wow, he must have had a major crush on the two of you. I can only imagine all the different kinds of disgusting, horrifying things that you and your friend must have had to do to that man to go to that game, but I’m sure it was well worth it. I know you must have some really great memories from that day, and I bet the game was fun, too. You are lucky for having such a generous pervert for a teacher. Most of my teachers were young, attractive women, and they’d rarely ever join me in any extracurricular activities. All they ever wanted to do was waste my time with stupid school crap. It still annoys me whenever I think about it.
What a great human being. A doctor now, and he took you to see Michael "Air" Jordan in person. He gave you a historic lifetime moment. Fitting since he was a history teacher, but yeah. Took you to see some real historical figures on that field trip. Good people.

@@stevenp9209 Kobe was way overrated... Jordan had better statistics in virtually every category offensively and defensively. Some perspective... Despite some of Kobe's ball hogging performances, he had ZERO 50% FG shooting seasons and averaged below 45% for his career.... Jordan averaged almost 50% in his career on top of all of the other amazing stats. Further, of the first 3 championships Kobe had, he wasn't even close to being the best player as Shaq was absolutely dominant and everyone knows of of those 3 championships the 1 was 100% stolen in game 6 vs Sacramento as the refs called like 3 fouls on the Lakers and like 25 on the Kings, and most of those were in the late 3rd Q and 4th Q.

Thats the GREATNESS of Mike that these kids don't understand. He had such an otherworldly feel for the game everything he did was so instinctive and majestic. He was the closest thing to poetry in motion I ever witnessed.
You call this shit greatness? This is a regular ass behind the back that middle school kids can do today and make it look better than that, then the announcers act like he just did the most amazing shit ever 😂😂😂 Mj fans next level delusional

Watching Jordan as a kid through Highschool I practiced all of these things. Jordan was the most popular player in basketball in the early 80s on. I was born in 79 and in Elementary school we all used to emulate his moves during recess
Going up for a Lay up ……… Tongue out Yellen “Jordan” Matter fact one time not too long ago messing around at work after of a funky shot to the trashcan and said Jordan a few of the younger fellas said Jordan? I it’s Kobe lol my bad young fella
Invents is a strong word for that. Had a friend do that same move in middle school earlier in the 80s because he couldn’t dribble with his left hand. Necessity is the mother of invention.
Im not saying that MJ invented this but I havent seen anyone else who has done it before him. He was also a first to "honey dip" where he stuck his arm in the rim on a dunk. I laugh when I hear or read people now a days go crazy on moves today that arent close to MJ's moves or copies, he was an originator.
It is obvious you never saw "Pistol" Pete Maravich play! Jordan, Magic, and Isaiah Thomas all said he was the greatest ball handler ever! They all said they copied parts of there dribbling style from him. The Harlem Globtrotters wanted Maravich badly. Everyone agrees he had the best handles ever!
Kobe is my favorite player of all time but he even said with MJ there are no wasted dribbles or steps MJ really had no weaknesses in his game. MJ to me is the goat, because without him there would be no Kobe.
@@ericanderson7059 That's very true, brotha. Dr. J and The Skywalker both influenced Jordan but Jordan took it to a level that no one else could. God bless. 🙏🏾

MJ had one of the best attack handles in the game and still does. Each dribble was to set you up score or to get by you to score ..no wasted show off dribbles... he might embarass you in the process but the main goal was to score and he was a terminator when attacking. When i hear people say Harden is the best scorer the game has seen im like how quickly they forget, Harden is not on the same planet as Jordan when it comes to the amount of ways Jordan can scorer and how he scores in the clutch.. he has an unlimited amount of moves preprogrammed for any situation he faces. Dude was Another level.
Lol I’m a 5’7, 29 year old white guy and I do this same wraparound dribble when I’m playing pickup basketball with my friends haha. It’s honestly not that impressive at all. What’s impressive is genetics- having a very high intelligence like Einstein or Newton… or in Jordan’s case, being 6’6 with freak athletic ability
@@charlesg7926 I agree with Ryanator, I doubt that you do wrap around to the same hand. It's not natural, your first instinct would be to wrap around to your opposite hand. This is why it's impressive because happended instinctively to the same hand efficiently.

lebron is inferior to at least 50 other players. he isnt even that good at handles, shooting, or brain function. those people have no idea about basketball.
He didn't invent this dribble. Lots of players did this already. Literally Iceman George Gervin, Pistol Pete, Earl the Pearl, Oscar Robertson heck lots of old players did this. Michael had good handles but it's not like Kyrie or Tim Hardaway handles.
Oh, but you don’t realize that his fundamentals, quick first step, and court awareness were more than enough to make him impossible to stop once he got going.
@MARZOSIRUAS I’m glad someone else noticed that. Cause I’ve seen footage of Pistol Pete, doing that move. Yeah they’re both different but MJ did not invent that move.
I just want to acknowledge Mark Price, one of the coldest P.G's to ever play the game ... Career cut short due to injury. He was doing Steph Curry type stuff before Steph was even born.. A true marksman
MJ handles is very underrated. He gets to his spots and finishes like no other. Never seen anything like him before. Kobe tried to replicate but Jordan is head and shoulders above everyone else.
People forget all the old smooth great players , the earl the pearl spin , George Gervin finger rolls , Maravich passing and shooting from anywhere , Dave Thompson leaping ability . Jordan just strung it all together with huge natural ability and hard work .
Yeah, Pistol Pete was a wizard with the ball, so was Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, Walt “Clyde” Frazier, Jerry West was fundamentally sound, so was Rick Barry, and in terms of dunking, people forget about Connie “The Hawk” Hawkins and Daryl “Chocolate Thunder” Dawkins.
He is not saying that MJ invented the move. He is bringing a video from the mid 80s where the commentator says that he hasn't seen that move before, so for him is like MJ invented that.
0:11 Jordan hits left hand "hurts it" clutches it real quick, then recover wraparound with the right to the left side catching the ball on the left side with his right hand. Then driving all the way to the rim. Wow
After ur comment I had to go back and look. All I can say is “ILL”. He did it out of necessity. Not showboating. That makes it ten times better. Just raw instinct. That’s one of the reasons he’s the greatest.
@@TraumaER I don’t doubt that but even if thousands of you guys completely stopped watching they will not care because a million more are there now if it’s majority of fans going cold turkey? Then they’ll pay attention
Behind the back dribbles seem flashy but is a solid fundamental b-ball move that protects the ball and disguises explosive sudden change of direction that leaves defenders behind.
And both the announcers watched Pete Maravich and still was amazed by Jordan, so what does that tell you?
