As a Greek, i would like to take a moment to express my deep grief and sadness for the unexpected death of the unfortunate British helth Doctor and presenter of the BBC channel, Dr Michael Mosley. All my thoughts and prayers are with his dear family and I am sending my warmest condolences to his wife and his 4 children...We are all devastated by the sad news here in Greece, as we all hoped for a better ending, and that Dr Mosley would be still found alive somewhere, maybe wounded, but still alive ... Unfortunately, the news were not good at all... I know Dr Mosley was a very important person, and very popular Doctor in Britain and in Australia, but i want the British people who might read my text on here to know that is also a great sorrow for us, the Greeks over here to have this very bad incident happening on our land, it's devastating, as he and his family had come all the way from England and have honored our country to spend some good time and have their summer holidays here and enjoy themselves, and they end up having the worst times of their lives instead, in a very hospitable otherwise country, Greece... 😢 That affects us the Greeks over here and we are all so very sorry and shocked with what has happened to the unfortunate man 💔😔😢....R.I.P. Dr Mosley..🙏🤍🕊

One of the positives I've taken after reading so many inane and disrespectful comments in these threads is the number of very decent Greek citizens passing on their heartfelt condoloences. Best wishes to both you & your beautiful country, from the UK.

Do not feel in any way responsible my friend, this sadly was his own fault, we can all make bad decisions, and the Greek searchers did their best to find him. He was probably dead by the time his wife noticed him missing. We love your wonderful country and culture and all it has to offer.

Everyone has spoken so warmly about the kindness of the Greek people during this dreadful time. Your emergency services did an amazing job trying to find Dr Mosley, despite the intense heat, so although it’s the worst possible outcome, one we all hoped and prayed would not happen, I think the Greek people should be very proud of themselves. He was having a lovely holiday in your beautiful country before the tragedy, so probably really happy, now all we can do is pray for his soul and comfort for his family. RIP Michael Mosley. 🙏🏼✝️😢. Thank you Greece 🇬🇷 Greetings from England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

It's SO bloody easy to make a casual misjudgement and over reach your endurance. A few years back I was on holiday in Portugal. We were on the beach at Praia de Falesia under a hired sunshade for the afternoon. Bit of swimming.... bit of sunbathing... but not being as much of a sun worshipper as my wife, I decided to go for a walk along the beach as there was a light breeze on a warm day.... it was beautiful, and I hadn't a care in the world. I'd walked for just over an hour in the direction of Faro with the sun behind me, when I thought, I'd best turn back. As soon as I turned around and walked for a minute I realised that the sun was BLISTERINGLY hot, inspite of my sun hat and light summer clothing, and I'd absentmindedly already drank two thirds of my bottled water, and there was a stretch of beach ahead of me, probably no more than a mile and a half where there was nobody in sight and no facilities that I then had to traverse. I'm NOT stupid, I'm a resourceful, strapping six footer, I've served a full 30 years as an inner city frontline fireman and KNOW the symptoms of heat stress, syncope & stroke, but despite all my experience & awareness of the dangers I very quickly realised I had stupidly landed myself in DEEP trouble, but suffice to say I eventually made it back to where my wife was starting to worry about me, and when she saw me she knew that I'd taken a beating off the sun.... even through my hat the skin of my forehead was blistered and had started to bleed, I had stopped sweating (a SURE sign of heat stroke) and I was, according to her, more than a little "incoherent". If I had not been on a beach where I knew that I HAD to determinedly follow the waterline to return to my starting point, and instead been on a featureless, rocky, barren landscape such as that that Michael appears to have inadvertantly stumbled into and traversed then I think I too would have succumbed the same way that he and many others over the years have sadly done. Its how a beautiful sunny day with family can unexpectedly slip into a fatal tragedy.....all because of a simple misjudgement. It is SO easy to underestimate the conditions, overestimate your own endurance, and if you have no awareness of the onset of the symptoms of heat stroke, then confusion and disorientation strikes and your thinking and judgement processes VERY quickly become badly impaired. It appears to me that is EXACTLY what has happened to the unfortunate Mr Mosley. It does surprise me somewhat that with his apparently deep understanding of the human body & it's inner workings that he was not more self aware of the danger he was stumbling into. Deepest sympathy and condolences to Michael's family.

No navigation facilities with him, of any kind, unfamiliar with the area and route, insufficient amounts of water on a very hot day. Terrain where there is no cover from the sun. A loose rocky terrain which is extremely difficulty to negotiate. It was a poor decision. I wouldn't be seen dead walking in an unfamiliar area without adequate GPS navigation facilities. At most he had enough water to last 1 hour in that heat, quite possibly half that time.

Heat can overcome a person before they even know they are in danger. He was only walking to his hotel, he had an unbrella for shade, there was no reason for him to think he would be overtaken by heat stroke which causes disorientation and confusion leading to poor decisions. A huge THANK YOU to ALL the Greek emergency services, volunteers , residents and holidaymakers who have given their all to help to find our National Treasure. Like many British people, yourselves and other nations, we are all feeling bereft at the news. I am the stepmother of a son who went missing for 3 days only to be left with the same news...not in this way...but the feeling of waiting, hoping and praying and then given that sudden news is a feeling like no other, initially you are not even 'blessed' with the flow of tears, it's raw and unforgiving on your soul. I understand this and wish Michael's family all our love and heartfelt sympathy. Mandy & Adam Whitworth, parents of Daniel Whitworth , forever 21, 1993-2014.

Unlikely he would get so close only to die of heatstroke with 50 m to go, after a successful 2 km walk. He wasn't yet at the stage of crawling on hands and knees which a desperate man would do in that extremity. Nor was he sheltering under a rock. He was lying on his back, fully stretched out. That suggests a fall and descent into unconsciousness, with time to position himself comfortably. Such extreme injuries are not painful as shock kicks in, one feels just a sense of peace as the end approaches. I fell off a ladder recently, I can imagine the scenario.

A man and small child died in the Scottish Highlands a couple of weeks ago. People underestimate the conditions; are sometimes ill equipped; the terrain turns out to be far harder than they anticipated, and dehydration, lack of nutrition and/or heat stroke/hypothermia quickly leads to confusion. People make misjudgements all the time, it's just usually they get away with it.

Sad: But shouldn't a Doctor understand the risks of severe heat with exercise/climbing for a man in his third age!?? Surely a sun hat, plenty of water, and his phone would have saved his life! Left phone at hotel, and went off alone after saying he felt unwell! Bizarre and senseless death! I'm not letting my loved one wander off alone if they feel unwell, and I should damn well know what direction and area they are going to be in! And take my phone if you've forgotten yours and are going off alone! Commonsense people! USE IT! It's a very underated evolutionary life skill! 😮

He knew where he was intending to go.... but underestimation of the conditions and overestimating his endurance would obviously lead him into heat stroke induced disorientation. If you've never suffered from it, heat syncope & stroke creep on you unseen, unless you know the symptoms to look out for. Though I agree I am surprised that a doctor known for his interest in human biology and systems would not be self aware of the onset of heat stroke.

being a doctor doesn't rid you of occasionally being subjected to the faults of human error, he wouldn't of brought an umbrella and used it to shade himself if this was his intent. he was on holiday for christs sake. its cruel and disrespectful to spin conspiracies about a death, especially one so recent and sensitive. accidents happen, mistakes are made, we can overestimate the durability of our bodies and eventually succumb to symptoms that'll lead us to our death. it was likely a devastating freak accident as nothing indicates an intention.
