I was ripped off for $50k back in 2000. In today's money, that's at least $100k. I was advised by my attorney that I could win, but it would cost me $100k. He advised to cut my losses. To this date, if I could figure a way to dissappear the m'fer in a barrel at the bottom of Lake Mead, I would. Unfortunately, the damn lake is empty! FWIW...the legal threat letters are a waste if time. Just do it..no threats.

Thanks for sharing Christian. I had similarly been frauded this month. Sold an IWC Big Pilot 43 on Reddit with PayPal. Buyer even confirmed through email that he received the watch. One month later he charged back through his credit card. $6800 pulled out of my PayPal account and back to that thief. I'm truly gutted. I've bought and sold so many watches over the years without a problem. Now I'm so gun shy and not sure I ever want to deal with that again.

You guys are THAT good at schilling SquareSpace, I finally forgot I was being sold to! Congrats. I find that if debtors/rip off someone, even as a business (where you can with sufficient proof wind-up that company - provided they buy it in their company’s name, but they can phoenix the company 10 minutes later). They either freak out at the lawyer’s letter and pay ASAP - it is worth a try. If they say “get fuxxed”… it’s so hard. Experienced criminals deal with legal threats all the time. They sometimes have “heavy duty” friends, that they have an arrangement with. I did threaten a father / son who blatantly ripped my parents off over a crappy car… they were “shaken, not stirred”. They waited me out. I couldn’t hang around to make their life and business miserable and remain within the law (they live on the other side of the country). I am a lawyer with my own practice, and so cannot throw my legal career away just to firebomb their business or worse... (Obviously, violence crosses one’s mind - as you point out it is your parents property. In my parents case it is was a lot of money to them.) I instantly appreciated this was an “impossibly crap legal case”. I never bothered with a legal letter… any scummy father/son duo who does that to old people have thrown away a lot legal letters. It works if both sides have big budgets, and and their directors will resign if the company makes the news in this context or even allegation.

I did some of that work (judgment enforcement) in my first year of practice. It was a lot more money in my case and involved some unsavory guys with broken noses in the Las Vegas area. It's difficult to recover on a money judgment from well versed fraudsters, as you've learned. Our bad guy put his ill gotten gains into shell corporations, with the owners being anyone other than him but people beholden to him. Ultimately we got the dirt/real estate in a time when it was very valuable due to the Las Vegas residential market expanding and developers being desperate for land to build on. Senior partners in the firm were laughingly advising me to have somebody else start my car in the morning. If you've read this far, consider hiring a good SoCal private investigator to do an asset search on this Ossen guy and his kid. Could probably be done relatively cheaply and the costs of enforcing your judgment can be recoverable if you find anything. A friend went to Vanderbilt and I sent him a screen cap of the elder Ossen's bio showing his claimed educational credentials. Might be worth a few laughs when I get the response.

I would of spent 20k to get back my 5k if I had the opportunity of winning, just the principal of making sure I taught them a lesson. Unfortunately our laws work against us and favor criminals like the father & son duo. I'll bet you can garnish their wages since you know where they work. I happen to know that happens all the time and if the business doesn't comply they can get huge fines (at least in my state).

I hope this story ultimately has a bad ending for these guys -- a stretch of jail time would do them some good. On a related note -- from personal experience -- it's good to be aware of predatory doctors/surgeons who you may only find out later (unless you inquire upfront) are working out-of-network, and will directly charge you an outrageous amount of money. Because they can. It's legalized robbery within an intentionally opaque system. Nothing much you can do about it after the fact.

So wild that you can go thru the legal process and have it not work at the end. Justice system is a joke. Society has progressed so much, but we’re still in the wildwest it seems

Get someone to try to buy a watch from them. Have that person ask for their bank account number for direct deposit. Then instead of depositing money have them give you the account number so you can collect directly.

contact every single one of the residents (and/or their controlling family) at his assisted living homes and let them know of the circumstances... for the residents and for your satisfaction. It is likely that they'll move to another home. Furthermore, you can lambaste them online to any prospective residents. Attack the businesses, as he attacked yours.

I would have taken a few of my Marine buddies to discuss his opinions. Lol. Life lesson, never ever sue unless it's going to break you, no matter how right you are. Ugh! I hate that there are so many of these dirtbags out there, literally making a living by stealing from others. Thieves and liars - cut from the same cloth. I truly believe that the legal punishment for theft [of any kind] should be so severe that it’s just not a viable option for anyone to consider. My dad used to have a saying that were words to live by. He’d say: “Son, never trust anyone but your mother…but still cut the deck.”

Have you tried selling your judgement to a collection agency? You might get a little bit of money back, but more importantly, you'll have a motivated collector that might set karma back in balance just a little bit.
