Michelin Pilot Sport ALL SEASON 4 - Real World Review

The Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 is an ultra high performance (UHP) all season tire that promises to be sporty in the summer, offer enhanced performance in the cold and wet conditions often found in winter, AND have performance in the snow.
Can this one tire really offer all these qualities in a single tire? Or would a dedicated summer tire and winter tire be a better option?
I find out by borrowing the new Chevrolet Stingray C8 Corvette and road tripping from the hot desert in LA, to the mountains in Salt Lake City, Utah, in order to test the tyres in the warm dry, cold and wet, and snow and ice, with a surprise trip to the Bonneville Salt Flats.

What a beautiful drive it is too! And I'm sure you notice there's about 4 different canyons spliced into "one" canyon drive

@@tyrereviews oh yeah. Many canyons through that drive. I’ve done it so much that it’s kind of boring to me haha, but there are other canyons in UT that are absolutely beautiful to drive, in all weather conditions. I’m from San Diego, CA, and have been in UT for 4 years for school, and over the years, have done this drive a lot. Even just going to Vegas I’ve done quite a bit.

These tires are great in the summer, but I just drove in some heavy sleet and freezing rain and they performed beautifully. While as expected, the traction is less than studless snow tires, they offer great stability and predictability. I was able to get wild (only on purpose not unexpectedly) then reign it right back in on command. You will never stop on a dime in icy conditions, but I felt it stopped better than average for being on ice. They perform better all around than any other all seasons I’ve had. 10/10 would buy again.

I just replaced a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires (which, I LOVED) with these Pilot Sport AS 4 tires so that I can drive at lower temperatures without as much worry while also maintaining a lot of performance. While the PS4S were the best feeling and looking tires I've ever had on my cars (in appropriate temperatures), I'm also loving the feel of these PSAS4 tires so far. They will probably be what I stick with from now on. Great video!

Great video! I live and work in SLC and have done that drive MANY times to visit family in LA. It’s fun to live 20 minutes from my favorite ski resort. I’m up there nearly every week 4-5 months of the year. And….love the tires you chose to review. I run a dedicated winter wheel/tire combo November-March (Michelin X-ice)and those A/S the rest of the year. They are great for unpredictable Utah weather. Dedicated summer tires wear out too fast and pick up gravel and throw it all over the place.

Thanks Jonathan, for another interesting and useful tire review. I think you've nailed it precisely on how well Michelin has balanced and extracted the best handling and wear characteristics that are normally mutually exclusive on tires. I noticed this on previous reviews on other Michelin tires and experienced it myself on the PS4S tires that I got on my 370Z. Your excellent review of the PS4S was a principal reason for why I got that tire. I'm looking forward to future summer ultra high performance tire reviews ... if these darn PS4Ss will ever wear down😉, or maybe I just need to do some fast canyon carving on the coastal roads here in northern California in order to help them along.

Kind of a funny update; 2 days after installing these I got stuck in a snowstorm. I've been a big believer of winter tires for years, and this experience reenforced that. I had what I'd consider to be "average winter driving problems" - gotta go slow, a lot of sliding while trying to brake, stability control doing its best. As opposed to proper winter tires, where all these were virtual non-issues. The dream of one set of tires for the whole year... still not here.

Germany required 3peaks symbol for winter tires after 2024 although Germany are mostly wet in winter, not snowing except Hamburg or Berlin. Fortunately, the Law only say in icy conditions, not by month like Austria. Winter tire is a waste of money, noisy, wear fast in aspalt, and soft like gelly. I believe, we only need US touring all seasons tires for most people that only get snow 1-5 days in a yesr.

I love the conclusion for the snow behavior. It sums up perfectly. They are really good as long as the road surface is still visible. Which covers a lot of use-cases, like freshly plowed roads, or busy salty roads, which are slushy, instead of snowy. I really struggle on these surfaces with summer tires, but these all seasons are just fine. And this covers a LOT of the population, like everything between Canada and Florida, or Scandinavia and Spain, and the populated city areas.

Great review! I think these tires make more sense than the PS4S for a street car; better life span, they don't pick up stones as much and they're cheaper, my buddy runs PS A/S3+ on his 996 911 for those reasons. Totally agree with your assessment about them being a 3 season tire, if you live in Ontario or other jurisdiction with similar or worse winters you really need dedicated winter tires.

I use A/S 3 for road driving in Washington DC (hotter and colder than the UK but not bitterly cold) and Cup 2 for the track on my C7 Corvette Grand Sport and for our climate it works really well. Also Corvettes are interesting as the ABS, stability and Performance Traction Management are calibrated for the tires (and type of brakes) the car comes with. So after market Cup 2s on a base Corvette can be frustrating.

I love this kind of tire technology. This UHP all-season performs better than several middling summer performance tires in dry and wet conditions above 40° Fahrenheit. It truly does everything, with even decent snow capability. The Michelin PSAS4 and the Continental DWS 06 Plus really have changed the game for UHP all/season tires. I have the DWS 06 Plus on my Mazda3 and they’re great, but I wonder if I missed out on some outright dry grip or steering feel compared to the Michelin. Though I know the wet and snow performance of the Continental will be superior I don’t get much of that weather in SoCal.

I can see these being really popular in Vancouver, Canada. It gets cold and wet and slushy where they would outshine a summer tire and it rarely gets the harsher winter climates of Eastern Canada with massive amounts of snow that would make the tires fail. Definitely will be in consideration for me in the future when my winters/summers need replacing. The rim protector and nice sidewalls are such a blessing and I wish more manufacturers put it into consideration for their tires. @@lonniemurray4742 I had the A/S3 on my GTI and I feel the same. I switched to summer 4S and they have been fine in very light snow say 2 inch max . I have another car with winter tires, so I mainly use that one when I see snow. But if its say 20 degrees Fahrenheit and dry, its been fine for normal driving.

You should review Federal Tires, they've become very popular amongst enthusiasts on a budget recently since a lot of people can't afford to spend exorbitant amounts of money on tires but still want to track them or have fun in the canyons. Also, you do the best most objective reviews so it'd be great to hear something other than someone's personal opinion on youtube.

I love UHP AS tires. Even in summer, they are better than most summer tires, only summer UHP tires can beat them by a small margin. I was only 1/10th away from my car’s official 0-60 time. Sure they are NOT snow tires at all. They are only good enough to get you home in case of a half inch surprise snowfall. If you are careful. Better than summer tires, but nowhere near real snow tires. But many of us are living in populated areas, where roads are plowed overnight, and on the 2 days a year when we have heavy snow, I can just stay at home. And these are the best in rain and/or cold. I’d put 60k miles into a Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric AS set in my Mustang, and I was very satisfied with it. I just replaced it to these Michelins (that’s why I’m watching these videos), which has even higher ratings. Looking forward to how they perform.

Update: just after writing the above comment, I did my first acceleration test. Temperatures just below freezing, road surface is dry. I have 320HP on the rear wheels. No revving the engine, just wide open throttle from idle after a red light. Not even a squeak, the grip is very nice. On this performance level, I see no drawbacks whatsoever compared to a dedicated summer tire. I would probably need 500+ HP to justify Pilot 4S for the summer.

That fits my experience. when you have a sporty car, your living in an area where the streets are mostly damp or dry in the winter at temperatures around 0°C and you don't need to drive it every day I can recommend to drive a summer tire in the summer and an all season in winter, because the all season just is the better compromise. Also if the car has AWD traction is not a problem even on streets with thick snow. The all season has a better road feel and as long as the roads are not snowy it even has more grip than a normal winter tire.

I have an 4WD Honda Crosstour and I've been running the Continental DWS and DWS 06 for the last 2 sets... never went over to the Pilot Sport AS because I was worried about the snow performance (for an All Season). I think it looks to be better than the AS3+ so I might consider it for my next set.

One comment worth making - the Corvette OEM PS4AS is slightly less geared towards actual snow and more towards providing a reasonable driving experience in very cold temps. The actual PS4AS should do better in snow by a fair bit than the Corvette versions 🤞

I use Firestone Indy 500 summer tires starting in March for the last 4 years on my 16 S550 GT and drives perfectly fine even in -15+ temps! It will loose some tire pressure which my portable inflator can easily refill and amazed how well it does! I still can't believe how good these tires considering it's going to last me 8 months each year for 4 years for a set of tires that only cost $1100CAD!

These are my winter tires on my Focus RS. It never gets that cold in my area and hardly snows so true winter tires are overkill. Also it will sometimes spike up into the 60s and 70s during the day and be in the 30s at night when I get off work so winter tires would experience to much wear during the day and summer tires wouldn't have any grip at night. Summer time though I switch to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires

I put these on my Accord V6 (Front drive, about 280hp). They're great even in sub 40 fahrenheit (as you said), but they are insanely grippy for an all-season. The unintended byproduct has been that they don't chirp when you hit the gas, and I've been finding a bit less torque steer off the line.

Gotta admit, for this type of vehicle and it’s intended purpose, I’d option the dedicated summer tires. Which I think comes with the Z51 package. Where I live we have 2 seasons. Summer, and winter. Thus we have dedicated summer tires and as soon as the temps get to 7C, on go the winters. Anyone with a sporty vehicle puts their car in hibernation. 😉. It’s a PITA to swap out wheels every year, but at least you know you’re ready for anything the weather throws at you.

Like the honesty of this tire's capabilities in varying conditions. We seem to agree. I drive a Scion FRS. It came new with primacy HP tires. Made in France. Very satisfactory they were and lasted 48,000 miles. >Replaced them with Pilot Sport 3+ tires, Y spec. Hated those tires as the sidewalls were too soft. All the wonderful sharp steering response of the previous primacy HP tires no longer existed.< Went back then to another set of Primacy Hp tires yet one size bigger. Those were made in Spain. The made in Spain tires had great handling/steering feel, yet were much harder riding than the original tires. Switched them out for a set of Pilot Sport 4s tires in also the bigger size...now on the car. These are a great compromise between the other two. Still slightly hard riding yet no where near as hard as the Primacy HP tires made in Spain. I have not yet figured out how much difference there is in ride quality between sizes. Original tires were 215/45/17. Now using 225/45/17. The 4s tires do retain the handling/steering feel of the Primacy HP tires. Have you experienced same model, same size tire, yet made in a different country, varying in stiffness or hardness of rubber content ?
@tyrereviews
@tyrereviews 3 года назад
Good information, if you ever get the time feel free to leave some reviews at www.tyrereviews.com :) As for different manu countries, unless the tyres are intended for different markets, or an OE fitment, they should be the same. And Michelin are probably the best at making them the same. So it might be the larger sized HP were an OE fitment somewhere, intended for a different market to the OE tyres, or just one of those weird things with a larger size like an extra ply was introduced

I loved the video. It's something different to what you've done before.I just missed the track test, being a UHP tyre I thought it would be a most. If I can give you advice, it would be great that you make more videos like this with more production, that would make these videos more exciting and you know, would compensate for the big load of data that is handled during the videos. So far, I love it and I think you're doing a great job. Keep the good work and thanks!
