It's finally done! A long term test of the Michelin Pilot Sport 4, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 and Continental PremiumContact 6 in 225/40 R18.
www.tyrereview...
I rotated the use of each tyre over the past few months, covering thousands of miles, and have worked out which tyre has the best dry grip, which has the best wet grip, which tyre is the most comfortable, but most importantly, which tyre has the best steering response and sporty handling.
While this test was completed in 18" wheels and tyres, it should also apply to the equally popular 225/45 R17 size.
More information can be found at

Great comparison! I would also be very interested in a comparison between these 3 tires and the Yokohama and Hankook counterpart! What do you think? ps. Asymmetric 5 not available in 215/40 R18. What a shame...
@nirfz
@nirfz 4 года назад
@@CasualFlyer I support that! all 3 are not available in the dimensions my car uses. While at least Hankook makes tires in the right dimension. (Especially the rear 285/35/18 101 Y are nowhere to be found in the current models of Conti, Goodyear or Michelin. They do still offer the Sport contact 3 which i therefore use, and the Pilot sport 3 while goodyear with a reduced load index would offer the asymetric 2!)

I went from Michelin Pilot Sport 4 to Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5, I immediately noticed the better steering precision and the lower noise. The lower grip on public roads is impossible to notice, but the difference in price is significant! I recommend them to everyone, they are really excellent.

When they lowered their prices and innovated with these new tires in the last 3-4 years they have really become competitive. Before they were over priced and tires had some issues. Belt issues where the belts start shoot out the side of the tire. Or chunks of rubber ejecting out the crown. Especially the Fortera HL !! Never buy!

They were not outclassed, they had some of the very top end hi performance sports tyre like the eagle zr 55 and zr 60 which were mounted on the Testarossa and the Corvette ZR1. Also in 1993, the Eagle GSC was another milestone tyre for absolute traction and handling in the wet. Later in 1998 Eagle F1 was introduced with ROF (run on flat ) available which was one of the best tyres available back then. In 2009 they introduced the Eagle F1 all seasons being one of the most versatile and best handling tyres for all seasons. The latest one is Eagle F1 Supersport which is perhaps the best tyre regarding hi performance super sports car.

RIP GoPro camera/mount @ 5.58. Great review, thank you for doing a segment on tyres for the more everyday car. I have a 2008 Subaru Liberty GT currently fitted with 235/40/18 Pirelli Dragon Sport tyres (fitted by the previous owner) and always like to watch your videos to see what tyres I will choose next. Sounds like the Goodyear or Conti's for me based off your test and feedback.

I couldn't agree more. Also about a month ago, I upgraded my A3 8P convertible (so not exactly the most dynamic chassis) to 18" wheels and fitted the Goodyear's after seeing your comments in the prior group test and seeing at what price they could be purchased. I don't recall what they replaced, fitted by the prior owner and quite old. But I have never been so impressed with the performance of a new tyre when switching before. Maybe the bigger wheels helped but the car is nothing short of transformed.

First of all, I'd like to thank you a lot for the review! I believe it will help a lot for those who are hesitating between these three tires. I bought Michelin PS4 for my mk7.5 GTI this year and I totally fell in love with these tires! For the very imperfect roads in Ukraine, it gave me a very unexpected level of comfort on 18" wheels. Comparing to the base 17" Bridgestone Turanza T001 that was absolutely awful, it's much more silent and comfortable. Comparing to my previous 18" Continental Sport Contact 5, it's much more comfortable and softer. During the first ride, I even thought that the tires were underinflated but in fact, they were even overinflated. Finally, I found the perfect tires for me and my car.

My parents car is in 19" and they really hope it wasn't. It's a Grandland X with Continental SC5 SUV... It's bad for a car like that, we need comfort and low prices ! This video convinced me that they should change the SC5 for the PS4 SUV available in the same size. My dad was really disappointed by how noisy the car is at highway speed (clearly tyre noise, because there is no wind or engine noise) and despite the soft suspension small road imperfections feels a bit harsh (the suspension do a great job over larger ones, but it's mostly the tyres that deal with the small stuff).

@dufonrafal 4 года назад
@@user-fy2qq2ih4d 15" is not even possible on a lot of modern cars. On the Grandland X it won't clear the brake, 16" minimum. And because tyre manufacturer follow market trends, you can't really have high profile car tyres anymore. Look at the tyres on an old Rolls Royce, those sizes are only available for trucks now...

Great review. I switched to Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5s after watching your previous review of this this tyre. Coming from awful Bridgestone Potenzas previously on my VW GTI mk7.5 Performance with 18 rims I have been super impressed. The handling is superb IMO, with good noise levels. I can drive confidently in any weather on any road surface. As a tyre to live with every day from commuting on motorways to blasting A and B roads at the weekend, I think the Goodyears are excellent. Also (rare for me) brushed a kerb recently, with minimal alloy damage that was easily repaired due to the sidewall. Thank you for your original 17/18/19 review which helped me spec 18s over 19s from new. And thank you for the advice to go with Goodyear 5s. On the GTI, I think a perfect combination. Keep up the great reviews!!! Cheers

I have Continental Premium Contact 6. Three days ago I hit a curb at a right angle with the front right tire. I got out of the car and looked at the tire, but I didn't see anything. Yesterday I saw 2 deep cuts of between 2 and 3 cm each and the tire was completely flat, without air. I was driving up to 120 km/h for those 2 days before I noticed the cuts and the tire didn't blow, I could have had a very serious accident. Therefore, a quality tire is really important for safety. Great review! I have a Focus ST which came standard with the previous Goodyear F1s which struggled for traction, particularly in the wet. I put Michelin PS4 on a while ago when I replaced the F1s. The way they're described in this video is EXACTLY how they behave on the ST. There's more comfort than before but noticeably more understeer and less positive turn in - a trait I loved about the Focus when I bought it. PS4 has grip for sure but not as enjoyable for me. Comfortable though. 🤔

Just brought Goodyear Eagle F1 17" for my BMW e90 330xd (310ps stage 2) The performance it gives me is insane. Can't spin the wheels at all! In the corners, it just perfect. Used to have Dunlop before and I can tell you its miles better than that. No squeaking noise, its just grip. No understeer, or oversteer, always perfect grip around the corners. Break distance is outstanding. I can't get to make my ABS work in the dry. Haven't tried it in the wet, but now looking at this video I'll.

I’ve been waiting for this review for a while so thank you. I have the Michelin’s on my Mini JCW, tyre size is 205/40/18. It’s definitely an understeer prone tyre, my car came with Pirelli P7 runflats which were awful tyres and the Michelin’s are better but not have to erased the understeer completely. I think part of the reason for my car being understeery is the tyre size is too small, so I’m thinking of going up a size next time. I will say I agree it’s a very comfortable and quiet tyre but it doesn’t fill me full of confidence when going into a corner at speed. Wet grip is much improved, pulling away quickly but not overly fast no longer causes the wheels to spin. Michelin have made a fantastic tyre, I just wish the 4S was available in 18 inches. I’m not sure if it’s the compound or tread pattern that causes the understeer but I’d love to try a 4S and see what that is like in comparison. I’ve never really considered the Conti before but next time I may do.

Exactly the test I was looking for! Got 4 GY Asymmetric 2 4 years ago on my Giulietta, largely influenced by reviews shared on this channel. I think I won't hesitate later this summer to put on 4 Asymmetric 5s. One thing I noticed is that the Asymm. 2 (though can't compare with the others) are incredibly resistant. I'm running 225/40/18 XL (not ROF) and they haven't suffered much the hit of at least 3 or 4 badly maintained potholes in Italy. On a vacation in Tuscany I was forced a few times to drive on dirt roads, some in a really bad state where I thought I'd have a puncture or damage the rubber in some way, went back home 2.5k and looked new. Also a few months ago a faulty air valve made a wheel lose almost all its pressure after I checked it, I've driven for 5-6kms on an almost flat tyre which is still intact now after another 5-6k km. I've put some serious stress on my asymmetric 2s, they are almost at the end of their thread life after 40k km of normal and also harsh driving and still had loads of grip on some mountain roads last weekend. Couldn't ask for more value for money

On my 2020 Subaru WRX STI I changed out the heavy 19 inch OEM wheels with 245/35R19 Yokohama tires for lightweight 18 inch wheels with 235/40ZR18 Michelin 4S tires (lost 26kg of total unsprung weight). I really recognize your statements. Even though the steering was much lighter due to the lost weight I had less steering directness / response on the 4S vs the OEM Yokohama’s. The comfort was 100x better indeed. On the 19 inch potholes would feel and sound like they would break the car! The Michelin now absorbs them astonishingly well. I do have a little more understeer indeed. I might have a good alignment shop dial in some negative camber in the front to counter that a bit. Thanks for your awesome tire reviews sir! About the rim protection being thinner on PS4, it is still definitely effective. I have them on Alfa TI rims (wellknown to be very soft), and while being extra careful, there were some touches where the rim protection works as its best. Not a scratch.

I had four branded new F1A3 fitted to my Audi A4 (FF) back in 2016, and strangely found the front pair had wore out so quickly that I had to have them replaced before the MOT last December, while the rear pair were still 90% new. I bought a new pair of PS4 and fitted to the front deliberately to test the Michelin, and after 5 months I had the front and rear rotated at the time of brake fluid change. Guess what, since the rotation with the F1A3 back in the front axle, I found the handling feel is better than the PS4 !! Well done Goodyear with an outdated F1A3 beating the newer PS4 by some margin. (I think it would be unfair to compare a worn pair of F1A3 against a new pair of PS4 at the time of replacement last December, but in fact the worn pair of F1A3 gave me a very similar feeling to the new pair of PS4 !!)

Only problem with the MPS4 is the tread wear. I went through 2 sets in around 15 months and only covered 12k miles total. New set of PS4S and after 10k there was still about 3/4mm tread left before I replaced the rears last month. Fronts are still good and above 3mm but I'll be ordering new fronts shortly to match the rear (to be fitted after the lockdown is lifted naturally!). PS4 is a good tyre, but the PS4S is in an entirely different class. I'm actually not surprised by those results. The Michelin is really a tyre for powerful sedans and luxury cars with low profiles tyres more than for real sport cars. It's a road tyres with loads of grip and a refined ride for the category, that's how Michelin markets it. I really like what Michelin went for, but it's true that the PS4S should be available in 18" for GTi's and alike. The Continental is just way too harsh for me, I've experienced them on multiples cars, and I really can't live with them, too much noise, you feel the road imperfection too much. There is a direct feeling but you really have to sacrifice for it, especially for the "PremiumContact". That's how Germans like their car apparently, as you stated for your Skoda suspension... The Goodyear is a really good choice, it's a traditional sport road tyre at a good price. Personally, I would fit the Michelin or the Goodyear depending on the car, how and where I want to drive it, and what my budget is. The Continental is just a no go for me, not for a road car, even on very smooth road it just always remind you that he exist with poor NVH. Like an annoying child.

My review on assy5. It gives up on sporty side as little as possible to still remain a comfortable tyre. Amazing balance of qualities. I think it’s impossible to have the sharpest turn-in and still remain comfortable. Review made on my Audi A5 2019 , changed stock Potenza S001 255/35/R19 to assy5 245/40/R18, and overall I’m happy. Much much less tramlining and lighter wheel weight are the most noticeable differences, turn-in reaction decrease is not that big actually. Also, I actually like that tiny bit of floatiness of the new tyres, because it helps to feel the actual weight transfer, and makes it more predictable and easier to drive at the limit. With potenza s001 in R19 the slip is also very controllable, but the grip is so big and the sidewall is so stiff, that it is somewhat scary.

Well your previous tyre was a eco tyre after all :)

The EcoContact are known for being the softest of the soft tyres too, so you're summary is correct! If you ever have the time, it would be great if you could leave your thoughts on www.tyrereviews.com too

This test prooves I chose wisely few years ago. My daily EP3 Civic Type-R is on these 17 inch GY. But my "sunday car" DC2 Integra Type-R is on these 16 inch Contis. Can't comment on them because I haven't been on track (I am not driving close to limit on road), other that I don't have anything complaints about them. Great test.

@andris so both are good for your Type R? Or perhaps which one you are leaning towards too? Please share your thoughts, thanks. I'm currently with AD08R for FD2R. Dry superb but wet horrible

It would be interesting to see a test between Michelin PS4 and PS4S in 17 inch on a old BMW e36 M3 and maybe how the tyres improved to the original equipment tyres if possible 😁🤷🏻‍♂️ I like your channel 👍🏻

Such a shame the 4S is not available in your neck of the woods. I put on a set of 4S in an 18 inch on my mk7 GTI and it absolutely transformed the car. Have roughly 25k miles on them and I can see them going for another 30k at least. Incredible dry and wet grip as well

I wish the 4s would come in the right size for my 330i, the regular 4 is gonna have to do for now 🤷🏻‍♂️

ANOTHER 30K?! That's insane!

@@tyrereviewsThey are less than half way worn! It being a relatively light vehicle that sees no track use has certainly helped. Lots of freeway usage too.

After using Michelin PS for a few months now, I will say they are the best tire ive ever had. I drive long distances and drive dirt roads/ deal with muddy conditions at the work site, and the Michelin does so well on my Touareg. I might consider the F1's though next time at that price...

While supercar tyre tests maybe are the most exciting, this test is one of the most, if not _the_ most relevant test to most people. Great info! Also, not very original, but R.I.P. camera at 5:59

Very nice review/test. Great you included to mention rim protection although not in the conclusion phase especially as all the tyres had their pro/cons and were evenly matched. I guess Michelin need to strengthen the sidewalls of the PS4 to give the driving feel you're after on a sporty car. Better yet put out the PS4s in the smaller size for drivers that are willing to sacrifice a little comfort for feel.

My car (Focus ST) came from factory with Michelins PS4 (19”). I replaced them (after they got worn out) with Goodyears (Asymmetric 5) no regrets. So I fully agree with you, value for money and it’s a great tyre

It's the end of the road for my Conti Contact 2 which were put on my Audi TT by the previous owner. Dry handling is awesome but on wet it's appalling, when with thread at 4.8mm! Anyway, I'm excited to have Asymmetric 5s fitted all around this Friday. Made my choice after watching this review a couple of months ago. Thanks!

I bought the F1 Asymmetric 5 last year (225/40R18 - 255/35R18). They're great! My 330i handles like a dream. Done about 10 000km~ already and the only issue i noticed is that they're a bit noisy at high speeds but that's all. Great tires. Thank you for your videos! They're very helpful :)
