Paperwork makes the caper work.
Midst is an audio drama in which three mischievous narrators spin a surreal, reality-bending, sci-fantasy space western about a crotchety outlaw, a struggling cultist, and a diabolical bastard making awful decisions in a world on the edge of disaster.

Having listened to Midst before, I sometimes have to restrain myself from commenting on the plot to avoid accidentally spoiling anything, but this feels like a good time to say: I absolutely love the aspect of this story where it's like... partly an economic thriller? ...if that's the right term? The Trust having a complex mathematics-like system for determining the moral and monetary value of any given deed is so fascinating to me.

Just... the horror of it all. The Trust places a material wealth (I hesitate to say 'monetary', as far as we've seen you don't actually Spend valor) value upon one's moral worth, combining the worst aspects of Religion and Capitalism. Phineas, a hard-working and morally upright young man dedicating his whole life unreservedly to the Trust starts with such an immense Kynim debt that not even saving the Bank-Pope's son zero's it out. Moc, a 'diabolical bastard' who literally murdered a man in cold blood the night before and in a most horrifyingly painful manner at that, starts his account completely debt-free and earns enough Valor by essentially ruining the lives of everyone he's been close too that he could make a suit out of the stuff. As if you hadn't enough reason to distrust 'The Trust' before now.
@hollisbostick2872

Heh heh heh.... I'm feeling like flipping all that Valor back into money is not going to be as easy as Weepe thinks -- and not just because the moon, either. I was already shocked that one could pay "good money" for Valor (which is valueless? You certainly can't buy a loaf of bread with it, or can you?). But the idea that The Trust would allow you to convert the incredibly valuable (in their terms) Valor for money (which for them is relatively valueless) looks like a laughably obvious opportunity to tie the patsy (Weepe) up in red tape that ultimately denies the trade-back. "Take all you can, give nothing back!" It's a watchword for a reason😂
@levil3409
@levil3409 10 месяцев назад
They mentioned that conversion rates fluctuate a lot, I can imagine that the rate suddenly and "unpredictably" drops when a noname like Weepe tries to get his money out
@apocryph0n
@apocryph0n 10 месяцев назад
Yes THIS!! That’s definitely the Trust’s business model, the minute you accrue Valor (and in Weepe’s case a HUGE amount of Valor he paid for *dearly* in his money, his business, and his relationship with Saskia) you rely on the Trust system, because outside of them these valor beads are useless as currency. An Abacus isn’t even your actual Valor, it’s a *representation* of your balance, which you cannot access without the Trust. And given how they especially reward destroying any relationships with neighbors who are hiding from the Trust, and turning them in to enemies, that’s just another layer to the trap. I have no doubt they make it nigh impossible to leave the Trust once you’ve bought in by any and all means necessary. Weepe just bought himself a very fabulous beaded leash attached to a set of manacles, and that leash is held by the Trust. Patsy indeed. But how about that Moon, huh?? Shure is pretty!!
@mollymcallister1671
@mollymcallister1671 10 месяцев назад
Ultimately it's not surprising that Weepe would be so generously endowed following his 'Valorous' act of turning on the Cabaret, for any religion dealing harshly with apostates is the most serious of serious business.
@mollymcallister1671
@mollymcallister1671 10 месяцев назад
@@apocryph0n As of yet there is no indication that Valor even is any kind of spendable currency, but something which represents status and wealth by it's ownership, like being a landowner indicates your place in the pecking order of medieval nobility, the larger your landholdings the higher your place in the hierarchy. So too is it for Valor. It can be acquired and traded but it's never actually 'spent' on anything. I'm sure Weepe thought he could, if he'd earned a more modest amount of valor as he'd expected, just trade it with someone slightly higher up the chain than him who wanted a more impressive abbacus... the HUGE windfall he actually gets is like the difference between winning a couple grand on a scratch ticket and winning a Carl Sagan B Billion dollars on the mega-jackpot. Past a certain point Wealth also becomes an anchor weighing you down if you're not prepared for the burden.

I think that the most interesting bit of this episode to me is how it's almost the inverse of the previous one. The Ad Secla saw the signs in Fuze's living space that showed he had worked for decades through the trust to reach a positive balance in his account, and here we see Moc Weepe simply opening an account and putting in money to be valorous on the spot. Not to mention that what he's done is just steal the entire reward that might have gone to the Ad Secla, pushing Phineas well into the Valorous. I suspect this will leave him dead in the final moments of the show, as we saw signs of in the alley at the first episode when the moon fell

Ah Mr Weep shot 1st.. and committed this betrayal - he will have to be very smart on ways to use these credits (stored in the Vault) to his advantage. I'm pretty sure it won't be exactly the way he planned. And quite possibly not here on Midst. .. but if we know anything about Weep - he loves gaming the systems and following the paperwork. [[ Valor can be given --- recall another protagonist Phineas Thatch: was offered valor by the pretty boy hubby to get to zero.]] But I do expect Mr Weep to find a way to make some personal gain from all that Valor, after all - he's turned a black goo inside himself (trying to kill him) - into a profitable side hustle - via post office.

Voice acting needs training. Those forced fake pauses to emphasize every 5th word are so annoying! Nobody listening even remotely believes these "thinking pauses". Edit: Also, the fast switching of narrators doesn't add anything. Decide who's going to narrate an episode and stick with it. And the "4th-wall-breaking"... it's just there to get attention. If I'm starting to think about the narrators, the immersion is over. Not helping. But despite all the critique you guys are telling an interesting and captivating story!
