I don't know how Campbell muscled through these songs. I would have been a blubbering mess. IMHO, TP and Mike Campbell will go down as one of the all-time greatest songwriting collaborators, and TP & The Heartbreakers were, without a doubt, one of the greatest bands that every existed. Only recently have I been able to play my TP music again without crying.
I'm a long time fan of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, since I got their first two albums in 1979, I saw them live at the Hammersmith Odeon in London in 1981 when the Damn the Torpedoes album was released. IMO Tom Petty and Mike Campbell wrote some of the greatest songs ever, Petty's lyrics really reached out to me. I often wondered why they were not as universally popular, or well known as they should have been, but then it struck me that there was something unique about their music and that was, that even though I love so many of their, songs, often when I would buy their new album, I would find myself the first time I listened to it wondering why I bought it, before discovering it was simply brilliant as I listened more. Perhaps that's just me, but it made me wonder if many had missed what was going on, by hearing something once and then thinking "I don't like Tom Petty". For me the time it takes to get into some of the material, is also why I never tire of it, it's not some "catchy ditty" that you immediately like because of its simple melody and then get sick of it.
It's certainly not just your opinion. I think many of us share that opinion. Very under appreciated talent by most but certainly not by true fans like yourself.
I’m in tears! I don’t know how Mike got through this song!,, the first few chords I was a mess! ...they were such amazing songwriters! We were so lucky to have felt this beautiful music! Thank you! 🙏🏻🎶🎼✨🌟💫♥️💔♥️
I had tears in my eyes listening to Mike who is still clearly trying to process the loss of Tom. Beautiful tribute! Tom would be chuckling quietly and smiling surely.
A real treat to watch. One of the few times I've actually heard Mike sing. I'm amazed by how similar he and Tom sound. If he is open to continue playing Heartbreakers songs going forward, it would totally work.
So beautiful ,tear jerking...I can’t imagine how he got through this, but he is one hell of a guitar player, and the pain he is feeling shows in this performance...
I know I didn't think he was going to make it through the first song. I'm still grieving can't even imagine how he feels but man he is a master of his craft!
I became a fan for life when I first saw them play SNL. Refugee was the song and was my favorite song. Just like that we are already here. Thanks for the lifetime of music
Shed a tear or two when I watched this, & saw how hard Mike wants to celebrate Toms songs & life, but its so raw for me...so heaven knows how Mike and other Heartbreakers feel. Thanks for sharing it x
Mike Cambell s vocals are so similar to Tom Petty s´that he could go on playing the songs. Every note he sang, sounds like Tom Petty. I still remember clearly the day i "discovered" their first record and bought it. After hearing it, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers s music became a permanent feature on my then radio show.
Heart-wrenching and beautiful. Can hardly see how he got through it, but Mr. Campbell's made of some stern stuff. God bless you Mike, and rest peacefully Tom. Thanks so much for sharing this MM.
It’s gotta be tough for Mike, Benmont, Ron, especially Dana, Steve, Stanley, Stevie and everyone who ever played with him because a significant amount of all the greatest songs (not just rock n roll songs) ever made are by Tom and everyone and they will probably always hear, many times a day even, either their songs or songs from those influenced by Tom and The Heartbreakers music, but that percentage of incredible, timeless songs in the ether is remarkable, period. Tom and the Heartbreakers are the very best kind of immortal. It’s simply stunning, the number of hits alone, but they never released a bad song, imho. Every one of them fits in my life somewhere. I couldn’t just imagine my life without Tom and the boys, and frankly I wouldn’t even try and am grateful more than I can express that I never have to. I also know millions of people feel exactly the same. What a blessing Tom Petty was to humans. Both him and the band. I know myself better because of them. That’s incredible to me how much of an influence the Heartbreakers have had on just myself as a person. They inspired me and I wanted to be what Tom was, passionate, brave, brilliant & empathetic. Basically, just frigging cool, man. Those things are what cool really is, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are cool.
Wow Mike, that first song I think we all could see and feel your grieving the random loss of your best friend, and our beloved singer/songwriter for so many years. Thanks for getting through this very emotionally difficult song you did for us. We really appreciate it. Hang in there Mike!
Very touching to my heart. I’m overjoyed. My heart is filled with love for this band. I love you forever Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Your awesome Mike. Xoxo
My heart is breaking watching this. We can see the pain and love you had for your music partner. Tom was special, none of us out here in the internet world really know the connection. But we can have empathy and many of us are so grateful for the music you all gave to us. Please heal, be happy, you all did good :) Write, play, joy.
My favourite Mojo track.. played it myself many times but to see Mike doing this is legendary.. heartbreaking but such a beautiful thing to do. Big respect. ! Tom will always be our hero
You're quite right Davis Seals. Mike and Tom were friends and partners for so long he has to be there in spirit for Mike. When ever Mike plays any music Tom (the bossman) will be there.
You know whats crazy? Mike Never sang ,They tried but couldn't get him out of shyness, Classic Mike, Couldn't wait to hear you Glad your working out of Grieve Period, SMASHING
I don't think he ever sang on stage, but he did sing a couple songs on albums, Victim of Circumstance on Mudcrutch 2 and Hole in my Head on Echo are the two that I know of. That said, I was certain it was just Tom playing up his accent a little the first like dozen times I heard both.
It great to see Mike Campbell sing, such an underrated guitarist. good to see Mike playing with our own Neil Finn in Fleetwood Mac. thanks for the last 40 years Mike. RIP TP.
YOU TORE THAT ONE UP MIKE,I MEAN SMOKED IT,SAW YA'LL SO MANY TIMES, CANNOT EXACTLY REMEMBER, BUT IT IS IN DOUBLE DIGITS WHAT A TRUE BLUE ROCKER YOU ARE,AND YA KNOW TOM IS SO PROUD TEARS AGAIN MUST GO FOR NOW, THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH, YA'LL BOY'S ROCK !Walter B,Memphis 🎩
Something Good coming is one of my fave Tom Petty songs (that whole album actually). A wonderful tribute to the man by Mike. Don’t stop please. I realize the loss is fresh, but the best way to say that you love him, is to play his music to the fans that love Tom as much as you do. Sorry, Mike will probably never even see this...thank you for posting :-)
I've had the pleasure of taking in about a dozen shows by Tom and the Heartbreakers. Even lucky enough to have a short conversation with Tom. He's an American icon. One of the greatest rock and roll songwriters and performers that always had that punch, that presence of the heart of the music he loved. Tom Petty was and will always be Rock and Roll!
Hey Mike Campbell ***** You Never Lost Tom ******You’ve Only Gained More!!!!!He Will Always Be With You in Spirit & in Truth!,,,,*******Peace Of Mind To You Always ****💥☮️💥💥🎶🎹🎼💥
Very heartfelt and honest lovely man is Mike Campbell. You have a beautiful voice, Mike, which we never heard when you were touring with TP&THB. Hugs to you and your's. XOX
God Bless You Mike. Thank You from the bottom of my heart. I attended over 250 TPHB shows in clouding the last on on 9/25/17. I lived down the street from Tom and Dana and to this day I’m still broken by his passing. God Bless You Brother. Todd
What a beautiful, heartfelt tribute to Tom... especially Something Good Coming. It is so rare to see our heroes on stage showing such emotion and yet somehow holding it together... I really don't know how they do it. Thank you Mike and Thank you Tom for all that you have given to us for so many years! Rock on, brothers, in this world and the next!
Thank you very much ,🤗🌷💞☘️💚🍀. I love this song, something good, the version of all of the Heartbreakers and Tom Petty, I think they're in their warehouse singing this song. I am so very very sorry for your loss 💔 Tom Petty was One in a Trillion
This is beautiful! Thank you, Mike. Tom is sitting somewhere listening...and smiling. I believe you've brought tears try O my eyes and ti his. Thank you.
Tom Petty was 1 year 1 day older than me. I had my heart attack and coma at 63 made it through thanks to the doctors and nurses at St Georges hospital in London. they prescribed 11 tablets a day I reduced it to 3 including statins. woke up 4 months ago and decided to quit and haven't taken a tab since and still here ....and listening to Tom petty and the Heartbreakers again and learning all their songs on utube. Thanks heartbreakers my favourite band of all time. I know a lot of people love all these other bands but as an English person American music, especially Americas Special greatest band the Heartbreakers... is America ...for me atleast
Oh Mike. I can't imagine how hard that was for you to do. It was perfect!! Just remember the line in one of his songs, " You and I will meet again, Don't know where, Don't know when!" Forever Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers fan!
What the hell do I know, but I can only surmise that Tom would want Mike to continue what they began together all those years ago. Beautiful and important songs must go on. Mike, you're a hell of a player and writer and artist and human. God bless you and your beautiful partnership with T.P.
Excellent TRIBUTE MIKE,SHOWS JUST HOW MUCH YOU LOVED TOM,NEVER SAY NEVER,ABSOLUTELY AWESOME GOT TEARS IN MY EYES AND SMILIN AT THE SAME TIME, DAMN,SO GREAT MIKE,YOU KNOW TOM LOVE THIS AND YOU HE IS WATCHING FOR SURE,GENIUS PLAYING AND SONGWRITER,THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH JUST FANTASTIC 🤩😎🎩🎩Walter B,Memphis.
AMAZING. The bending and note drop at 12:01 is amazing. The most underrated guitarist ever. Think about it. Tom was filing for bankruptcy while making Damn The Torpedoes and all of the sudden, MIKE drops REFUGEE and Here Comes My Girl into Toms lap! BOOM!!!
course it is, DTT is an epic masterpiece by an ambitious band teaming up with the big league (Jimmy Iovine), while the utterly fantastic Mojo is a relaxed and savant rhythm&blues statement by mostly the same dudes that came out winning on the other side
Well DAY-UM!! I happened upon this when the # of comments was 420. How appropriate! 😘✌🏼 I hated to change it but want to thank Mike & TDK for this awesome, moving tribute. It IS healing (and I’m just an ordinary fan from the late 70’s) but I took Tom’s passing as if it were a beloved family member. Amazing how much he touched so many lives ✌🏼❤️ thank you, good people, for continuing to share your talent with us. That kicked ass!! 🎸 🔥
Love it ... sad but love it. Can’t fill Toms monster shoes with anyone . But cool to see Eddie vedder try his best on a tour with heartbreakers . TOM tribute tour please.
Class Act???? Mike Campbell is so much more than a class act. Man I'm in tears so bad right now. I loved Tom ever since the first time I heard him and later on when I became a guitar player and learned every note Mike ever played I gained such a deep heart felt respect for the man...God what are we gonna do without Tom??? Love you Mike
"and SOMEDAY you'll get to play them FOR him" you go Mike... and you did a fantastic job. Love you and your music and your "noise" y'all made all those years. And someday I'll get to see you and your band. I never got to experience Tom and the Heartbreakers in person. So, I've promised myself I WILL NOT mess up again, I WILL go see you and your band so don't ever stop making your music.
It would have been great to see Mike and Tom sing together, but it's great that Mike's continuing to play and sing the songs he played with Tom in memory of him, great to see him still enjoying them as always. Tom I'm sure is looking down with a deep sense of pride at this tribute you did for him Mike...R..I..P....Tom, your music lives on in our lives and is your lasting legacy.
I remember watching this thru tears the first time I saw it. Still happens now damnit. RIP Tom Petty. Love you Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs. Will be seeing you in April 2022 in Chicago - it's gonna happen this time.
Love Tom...and the Heartbreakers, always. First saw them when they went on tour for 'Damn the Torpedoes' here in Buffalo, NY. Still w/ out a doubt one of the best concerts I have ever seen almost 40 years later.
Mike, sorry for Tom's loss. I grew up with you and Tom and the rest of the heart breakers. You guys are my most favored band ever and You are one of the finest guitarist to walk this planet. saw you in Albany New York several years ago. Thanks for all you do and what you have done!!!!!
So incredibly awesome. Mike has a style that is so distinct and perfectly with TP & THB tunes. This shows the bond he and TP had, they were 'partners'. So great, man. This is as real is it gets. Wow. Also prompts me to plead with all y'all watching this, keep off the hard stuff. There are lots of people who love you and want you to stick around for the duration.
It looks like someone else misses Tom too. Seeing the band play the last Saturday night at Hollywood Bowl was awesome and thought wouldn't it be great to see them again. Like Mike, I miss him too.
Wow you can really tell how choked up Mike is singing this. of course it made me cry . again. Its amazing he did this song. much love to Mike and of course I always feel the empty space. in my heart. for Toms passing. miss you Tom there will never be another treasure like you.
